Neither. It's well known as JRPGs go, but mainstream is an exaggeration of its popularity. Mario, FIFA, and Pokémon are mainstream, P5 is not at all comparable to those.

P4 literally makes "Persona" franchise popular you newkid. Even with P3 modernized the style.
So thank P4 for making P5 best selling Persona game.

I heard a bunch about how good P3 was in college, then got a vita for cheap when att liquidated their stock like 6 months after launch. Anyone who got a vita ended up getting golden. Liked golden, then played and loved 3FES. It’s crazy to see how big it is now with 5. It’s a good series and I’m glad it’s big now, but 3 is still the best imo, warts and all.

Depends on your definition of niche and mainstream. They're obviously very popular among people into gaming, but they're nowhere near the level of popularity of really mainstream stuff like GTA, Assassin's Creed etc. Unless you're a gamer/weeb it's doubtful you'll know them, but they are one of the first surface weeb gamer things.

5 is the most mainstream, but even then you'll struggle to find an average person who even knows what persona is, even rarer is someone who knows and plays the SMT series

P3-5 are as mainstream as Fire Emblem is post Awakening, with 6-12 covering a similar amount of ground P3 does and 1-5 being shit only "grandpas" play

The older games are as niche as it gets, even older SMTs get a better rep.

To be fair, mainstream "video games community" isn't equal to mainstream collective unconscious.
Even 3 is starting to become kind of niche and outdated, even if it obviously leans towards the more mainstream of the titles.
