It's shit compared to 3 and 4, but it's a pretty good game on its own

I just don’t get how you can think that. I really like Persona 3 and 4, I love JRPGs, and I’m completely fine with dating sims. But I absolutely hated this game, it’s the biggest disappointment since MGSV. To the point where I haven’t gotten over it two years later.

It never came to the Switch so it went from, ha ha we get to play this game, to, boy that game was shit we didn't want it anyway.

It's a director's cut, basically. P4G added a character, a dungeon and some days to the calendar after the end of the main plot of p4. Maybe some new music but I dunno about that. Play P5 and enjoy because P5R won't release in the West for a while.

I’m not gonna compare it P4 because that’s just endless shitflinging. But on its own, I think it’s a shit JRPG and a shit dating sim.

The dungeons are really bad. The design and gimmicks vanish after Madarame and you get extremely bland linear layouts with zero effort puzzle rooms where the game refuses to let you figure anything out. It’s sub-Wind Waker levels of puzzle design, and the game gives you Batman vision AND Makoto will just tell you how to do every puzzle before you even see the controls. There’s also save rooms every five feet instead of actual shortcuts after Kamoshida. The game also has the worst stealth system of all time where crouching next to designated objects makes you completely invisible and moving between objects doesn’t break stealth. Then you have Mementos which is long, mandatory, and garbage.

The combat is very unbalanced. It doesn’t feel designed for the features you end up unlocking, so being able to swap party members or use bullets to down enemies is broken as hell. There’s a single optimal strategy throughout the whole game which is de/buff and baton pass, so there’s almost no thought involved. Once again, Swift Strike is the best move for 90% of the game.

The dating sim aspect is totally broken by the fact that fortune telling is a free action. Maybe because of this, it’s more gated by time than actually making the right choices. But the point system is also very dull because the only consequences for acting like a jerk is not getting points, which don’t matter. Scheduling isn’t a consideration because the game gives you way too much time. And every confidant is the same shit: waste time for 8 ranks, then go brainwash someone, in what end up basically being the game’s only sidequests. Then if they’re a girl they fuck you. Very little happens and character development is hampered by the recurring need for some comically evil villain in these relationships. It feels very contrived.

P3 is the patrician's choice of Persona.

Fair enough but I feel after beating this once, I'm never going to play it again. Maybe after walking Makoto home gently i might pick up four on an emulator or something, but I feel like that might be a slog since there may have been a lot of quality of life conveniences put in 5 that makes the game less grindy

Go with 4G. The story takes off like a formula 1 race compared to 3 and even 5 so It's not a slog. Just don't do them back to back because they're both long.

Yeah, but gameplay isn't just difficulty
because while it's easy, it has a really solid amount of variety in enemies, has arguably the best boss encounter design, dungeons are the best to look at and navigate they've ever been (not a high bar considernig the randomly generated dungeons in P3 and P4) and the city-stuff has the most depth and breadth compared to past games.
Again, not saying it's amazing in every regard but it does way more better than it does wrong in the gameplay department
