I haven't played VIII yet but it's not actually supposed to shoot anything, it's supposed to make the sword vibrate so it cuts through things easier. It's dumb.
There are also just gunblades which are just glorified bayonets as well, just not in VIII.

Clearly you haven't played the game. You can "enchant" your attacks with magic so you the enemy is inflicted with statuses or gets instant death, and you can even set it up so your attacks heal so you can attack your allies to heal them if you want.

I just remember that he's a metalworker who built it. I believe he didn't base the sizing on its art design, but its in-battle design (the game varied Squall's gunblade with 3 different models, not including concept art).

I can only say that, in the months and months it took for him to make it full-size, full metal, he was at least extremely meticulous in measurements to the in-battle model he based it on. He made sure it was precisely the right sizes and angles, and he made it strictly for aesthetic purpose (it's heavy as fuck).
And Squall is, not matter how you slice it, still not 100% human in design. The comparisons aren't ever going to look quite right.

The part mentioned to skip to literally has him freeze-frame compare to this exact image, too, to show the lengths/widths sizing. It's, like, a 2 part, 2 hour video, where he shows every step of the process making it, including where he got the ROM game designs for the model.
