The Shrink Ray, Freeze Gun, and whatever shit they had were barely usable practically and were mostly used as joke weapons that you used if you had to. The only one that actually could be used in combat effectively was the Shrink Ray and that was mostly used for just shrinking tough enemies and squashing them as a crutch to shit players.

Maybe not possible in a traditional implementation, but the old school working mirror trick was to have inside the mirror a bot that would mimic player movements exactly, giving the illusion of a reflection. You could do the same thing over water, just with a filter over the projected image. Like you'd implement a hologram.
It'd be utterly useless and not worth the time or effort, but it's doable with old school tricks.
