What precisely was the moment when Sonic turned from cool to cringe?

Sonic Adventure 2

Cringe started with Dreamcast, and it went over the tipping point with PS2/Gamecube.

I still cant fathom how Sonic Team unironically created the most edgy character in an E rated game while attaching him to one of the worst stories in sonic history.

What was Infinite's backstory again?
Got BTFO'd by Shadow right?

These. The moment it became this wild adventure to stop that pesky Old Man Eggman in his plan to take over the world with some ancient superpower is when things went too far.
I can't go back. I love the edge.

Hasn’t happened yet. Pasty video game dweebs just don’t know cool when they see it.

>merc leader
>led his dudes to raid Eggman's shit
>Eggman pushes him over and hires him and his crew
>Shadow mows them down and kicks Infinite around
>Infinite is called weak and chimps out
>therefore he turns himself into Eggman's latest superweapon with near limitless power
>this power is never capitalized on

Pretty sure he's got brain damage.

Dunno.
Sonic has always looked like rubbish to me, and its fanbase made me even less interested.

>later dies/vanishes???

>meanwhile they refuse to stop adding Zavok to the game(s)
>he even has a speaking role even though he's supposed to be an illusion
Sonic Team may have gone off the rails but it's shit like this that will always drive me up the wall.

honestly, voice acting

He doesn't even die per-say. The last scene he speaks he flies off to the top of the ruby tower and then he's just never seen again

That was when Sonic turned cool to Action Cool.
things went to cringe in colors

This. Shitty, generic platformer mascot made worse by writing that was clearly done after snorting an entire jar of cocaine.

I want to slap his ass and call him weak

Shadow.

Sonic Colors, unironically.

Sonic Adventure 1

When you grew up.

Was forces just rushed or what?

>No boss battle with Shadow or Chaos
>Infinite's backstory is barely explored and he fucks off at the end
>Infinite's powers are barely used and even less explained, such as the weird long Infinite liquid things on that one level
>Classic Sonic feels entirely shoehorned in and has barely working physics

Dies in the sense I doubt they’ll use him again.

Sonic Heroes (soft-reboot)
Everything after Shadow the Hedgehog's opening
Sonic '06

Lighting was made for 4 years, game itself in a year.

The original concept was gonna be called Sonic Wars but Sega stopped them again. Advertisements and CGI are the first things to be rendered, but a lot of scrapped concepts show that Chaos may have been purposed for a boss fight in Metropolis zone or Null Space.
Also, they lost the code for Generations/Unleashed physics so they put the game in the Lost World engine. And used the Nega Wisp Armor as the final boss again.

I wish we had more of Infinite fucking with the levels as you run through.
Also
>Null Space
>"no escape!"
>you give Sonic a high five and leave in under half a minute

The original plan was to try again with the idea they had during the Saturn era, where two western studios would handle Sonic games while Sonic Team could work on new original stuff. And in both cases, X-treme and Boom (funny enough Chris Senn worked on both), the US side of the trio fucked everything up. Because Boom flopped so badly, Sonic Team in Japan had to shit out a new game in under a year.

If you think this then you are the cringe.

The moment they integrated voice acting, and Sonic's personality become "cool" rather than just being cool.

The genuinely only way I could've seen that dumb high five shit working would be if it swapped you to Classic Sonic, made you go through a Null Space level as him, then meet up with others and do that triple boost to break out but they used it on the final boss instead.

WTF was even Null Space, shit makes no sense to the canon. It's not an illusion either. Eggman should've done that to Sonic in SA2 or Unleashed and call it a day.

Even without the deadline, there were some borderline retarded decisions with Forces’ development that make no sense in any context.

An example would be deciding to reverse engineer the boost formula starting with the lost world engine instead of just starting with the already functional boost engine used in generations. This is largely why the momentum is so fucked up in forces.

Sonic Adventure. I love that game but it was the start of the downfall for Sonic.

the gun sound effect used in the shadow the hedgehog ui
not saying it wasn't cringe before that but I think it's the epitome of it

sonic 1.

But that was when Sonic was peak coolness

As much as I hate to say it, Sonic turned to cringe when Shadow the Hedgehog released. I say that as someone who actually likes that game.

The thing that offends me the most about Forces is the stupid retcon that Classic Sonic is now another dimension instead of the past. Which doesn't even make sense and only served to make the Phantom Ruby's powers even more confusing.

When Shadow didn't die in Sonic Adventure 2

That gun is so amazing. I laughed first time I started Shadow the Hedgehog in emulator and heard that.

That bothered me so fucking much

I remember my friend and I playing that while drunk one night and as soon as we heard that gunshot sound we both bursted out laughing. Good times

>another dimension instead of the past
Same thing. Sonic runs on Dragonball logic.

This.
Also like Dragonball, Characters don't die. They just quit being written in.

The stupidest part is that it's obvious it was never actually meant to tie in to Mania at all. Classic Sonic himself was just a Phantom Ruby illusion, that's why he showed up when Tails was in distress and why he went away when the Ruby powers were taken care of. So trying to tie Forces and Mania together ended up fucking up both of them.

What an edgy twink

>Because Boom flopped so badly, Sonic Team in Japan had to shit out a new game in under a year.
There was a three year gap between Rise of Lyric and Forces, though.
