I already love Shantae and the Seven Sirens. This game is going to make me forgive WayForward for that tragedy HGH. My only complaint so far is them still using the HGH sprite of Shantae. I'm hoping that those are just placeholders for now because the HGH sprites don't work well with this new Shantae art style they showed off.

It's not that I HATE the sprites of HGH, it's that they worked with the character arts they used for that game. Now we have an entirely new and different art style but the sprites are still the same. It doesn't blend

I like this kind of game, so been thinking of giving it a shot. Which one would you recommend someone new to Shantae starting with? Newer and work backwards, older and forwards? I assume mechanics aren't hard to adjust to either way, and it looks like story is probably fairly self contained but I don't mind just playing in order if it matters.

The only story stuff that matters is that 2 leads into 3. Otherwise yeah, self contained.
The best ones are considered to be the GBC original and the third game, Pirate's Curse.
Personally, first game is best game, which seems to be what this game's going with in terms of dungeons and other half-genies, and once you get the hang of the game it's fun to play through. After that you can pretty much just go in order, but Pirate's Curse (the third game) has always been a good starting point for most people and considered the best by most. It's a direct sequel to the last one but it's pretty self explanatory, and most of the adventures are self contained.

Thanks guys, also looks like Pirate's Curse is on every single modern system ever so a little more trivial to take for a spin then getting back into the GBC mindset. I usually like to combine playing a few old games at once so my brain can make the switch back to that graphics style, so I guess I'll save the first for later in the year when I can play a few gbc/snes back to back.

People keep giving WayForward a lot of shit for reusing assets. Holy fucking shit, man, let it go. They're not a huge AAA developer, they don't have the resources to turn out FF levels of production. They probably don't even have the resources for an Unravel level production. It's either reuse assets of sacrifice that time and cost somewhere else. The last Shantae was crowdfunded, for fucks sake.
