He was part of a group of super-soldiers that got magic robot bodies, though the magic amplified some traits. Deus's was Pride. Yasha's was Meloncholy. Asura's was Wrath. Yadda Yadda 8 deadly sins.

So, he kept the Wrath in check because he was scared he'd endanger his wife and daughter. Then the wife died, daughter was tortured to consume souls, and he was murdered with the deaths of everyone he liked blamed on him.
So he died, and was in the afterlife, where you lose your memory, but Asura was SO MAD at what happened, his rage couldn't be forgotten, and he angried himself back to life without knowing why he's so fucking pissed.

He's a man that was always angry, made into a war machine that is even angrier and gets more powerful with how angry he gets, made more angry than every before during his own death, and when he wakes up in the afterlife, all that he has in his mind is the rage beyond super rage.
That massive amount of anger was his base-line for his second life.

Asura eventually calmed down when he got his memories back, but after climbing out of the afterlife he was quite possibly the angriest man in history.
