Energy mechanics aside, the gameplay was actually solid, the levels were detailed and had lots to explore and steal. The writing was (With a few small exceptions) total garbage though, and it ruins so much of the game.

The second is bad, but if it wasn't the successor to what many consider the best game every made it probably wouldn't be considered so bad.
HR and the rest are fine. They're good, but they don't have the same charm as the original.

I'm a huge deus ex fan so I'm of the opinion that they all at least have something to offer.
DX1: Great all round, just play it
DXIW: Consolified so the levels are tiny and other shit, but the gameplay is still pretty fun and there's a lot of little neat things throughout.
DXHR: They really tried, the art isn't for everyone, but the story is kinda there and the gameplay is the best so far. Levels are.. Alright.
DXMD: Toned it down on the art in a lot of respects, levels are huge and detailed, story is just wrong, all around. Gameplay is fun and there's even more abilities.

If the game seems extremely dark and it's hard to see stuff, get the Kentie DX10 launcher to fix the worst bugs you might have with the game. You don't need anything else on vanilla.
on newer playthroughs I suggest GMDX v9&10 first, and then Revision. Also TNM and Nihilum are extremely good mods
