Why did it have a dpad?

to play Kirby 64

in case you wanted to use it

theoretically, it was there to play 2d games. but then nintendo went on to release almost no 2d games for the system, and they never went back and fixed the shitty controller.

Pokemon Puzzle League and Magical Tetris. Probably two more games or something, but as said, it was more there to not ruin potential games.

Mischief Makers, Clay Fighter 63⅓

Jet Force Gemini

familiarity.
japs probably wouldn't have bought it if it just had the stick.

Can't you play Smash 64 with the dpad?

>brainlet zoomer doesn't know Smash was on it and all those based wrestling games

Lack of confidence.

literally everyone knows that

just another gimmick that nintendo forgets it exists after a few games that incorporate it.

I came here to post this.

This

If you used the D-pad and right hand for the control stick you'd basically have the modern FPS control scheme.
And yet I don't think a single game used that.

The stick was just so unbelievably shit. Shame on Nintendo for that.

it was a great controller, fuck you scrubs

Dr. Mario 64

Back then as a kid, it looked cool and futuristic af. Now in 2019, this is one of the most poorly designed controllers ever made. At least Xbox Dukes had something going for it.

Controllers are made before games are released, it's not Nintendo's fault nobody utilized the D-Pad they put on the controller.

The N64 analogue stick has the highest gradient of sensitivity of any controller. Nothing has matched it since.

Those look like cock rings for your analogs

Turok games used the control stick for camera and c-buttons for movements. Basically, what you said but with inverted hands positioning.

Does anyone know any good third party N64 controllers, or any good third party PS2 controllers?

it is nintendo's fault that they barely made any 2d games themselves. they can't control other studios, but they can control their own output, and they preferred making 3d games instead.

So? they left the option available for any who wanted to use it. Nintendo clearly had 3D in mind but didn't want to leave out the possibility for 2D games.
