It will never happen. The PS1 Classic only happened because they used already available fan-made open source emulation software. PS2 emulation is in a very sorry state, there is only a single usable emulator and it has garbage compatibility and performance, and it's closed source. A PS2 Classic would require far more time and resources than Sony is likely willing to put into it.

This is an angle I haven't considered. Since the GC/XB/PS2 era, each successive console has been at most a minor upgrade. Before that, almost every new generation was mind blowing. (Note to you nostalgia fags out there, this is the reason PS2 is not retro and won't be for decades) So theres no reason to release a dozen PS2 games for $80 or whatever when you can "remaster" them (increase the rendering resolution, slap on some pp effects and call it a day!) and sell them all for $60 a piece.

When you're working with PS2 emulation your code base is going to be a nightmare, there's nothing you can do about that. It doesn't even have fucking IEEE compliant floats for fucks sake, it's hard enough to follow shit like denormalized numbers when people are using a sane standard, much less when they're just doing whatever the fuck they feel like.

PS Classic is cheaper than rasberry Pi 3, is just as powerful, can run all the games that it can, and comes with two controllers and already comes with a cool looking case
