Creativity has died. Just look at the movie industry, same thing is happening to games.

Probably because you aren't 12 anymore

Attached: alliance alive.png (1876x876, 2.66M)

I really wish they'd port this. It really captures that feeling of adventure that permeated 90s anime

The Xenoblades across all games have really imaginative, creative and detailed settings, regardless of whether or not the games are good.

Can you post some nice art and fanart of Skies of Arcadia user?

The trends changed and they're shit right now let's hope they change again.

this is quite a good retort

Everyone wants to be the new Skyrim or dark souls except for established series like FF and DQ. Experimenting with new ideas for settings and stories is too risky financially for big corporations now.

Mass appeal. Game dev costs a lot more now and AA titles don't get made like they used to, so nobody wants to take the risk in being non-standard.

In recent years, only the Xenoblade games have a world as interesting Skies of Arcadia. Skies and Xeno being my favorite jrpgs, I guess it does makes sense for them to have that as a common ground. Also, now that I think about it, cloud seas and floating islands are a classic, yet I feel like I don't see them that much.

>Generic fantasy setting

I'm assuming because you look at all games from your past through lenses of nostalgia

Not bad, not bad, but this is the best-looking game of the past decade.

Attached: 1501979667184.jpg (4000x3930, 3.51M)

Too bad about the plot and the 'protagonist.'

Well, XCX is also up there of course, at least when it comes to exploring the world, but I wanted to post something akin to Skies of Arcadia in its setting and tone

Are you trying to imply generic sky pirates was a good setting? Yikes, weebs really have no taste

Why are a human Sticks the Jungle Badger and a Fire Emblem troubadour being lesbians in front of Anime Big Boss?

>i-it's original!!!

Sure

Attached: 5714773_p0.jpg (1024x768, 403K)

I hope you stub your toe user.

What would skies of Arcadia fans think about it getting the FF7 remake treatment?

Higher fidelity graphics and action combat

I'd love it. The combat was the worst part of the game. Even 1-button FFXV combat would be better.

>Muh action
Yeah no thanks. The only combat that needs an overhaul is the airships.

Action combat is uneeded, but reworking the SP system so magic could be useful outside of buffs would be a boon

I'm just coping with the fact that there will never be a sequel or rerelease

The environments are the only good thing about this game. Reminded me of PS1 pre-rendered backgrounds. Shame the rest of the game is so embarassing.

Legends patch with Dreamcast music fucking when?

If that’s what it takes to get this game back out there then so be it. So long as the ship combat is still turn based

This is now a Skies of Arcadia thread. Post your favorite

Baten Kaitos also has one of the best RPG settings of all time, and Chrono Cross is the most well-realized tropical world I can think of.

if I can recall the Dreamcast version uses a different sound format from the Gamecube version. So someone would have to redo all the tracks in the game under the new Gamecube format and make sure there aren't any bugs or looping issues.

I'd rather it got the Wild ARMs 5 treatment,.

Vyse easily although Aika is a close second
The Delphinus. It’s your ship and moonstone cannon
The capital of the desert biome. Can’t remember the name but had a great atmosphere and enjoyed the story there
Ixa taka hands down. Although I’m a big fan of the title screen music myself
Not a boss battle per see but saving Vyse dad and the other pirates and then escaping from Vaula
The first titan fight. Really set the pace for the rest of the game
Probably discovering the world is round.

The did. To the Game Cube. Except for the sound quality, it is glorious.

I'm just getting into X - as in just starting Chapter 4 and trying not to get my ass kicked by level 20 Indigens. I'll likely say "fuck it" and use the trainer at some point, especially with the Miiverse dead.

This was a disappointment for me. I read 'skies' and in the opening chapter there were sky pirates, but most of the game was on the fucking ground. Don't get me wrong, I still enjoyed it... but yeah, thought it was gonna be a sky pirate game.

Because everything has already been done before.
Because RPGs no longer sell compared to the CoDs and FIFAs and have comparitively low budget for more game.
Because both combined means cookie-cutter rehash with minimal effort copy-pasta.

Which version is best? I heard the gaycube had compressed audio?

You either choose more content (Gamecube) or better audio (Dreamcast.)

I thought the same thing but ended up loving it nonetheless

"more content" like what?

Adding onto this, the Dreamcast version has a higher random encounter rate

They added some sidequests.

How come there isn't a sound pack file for Dolphin anyways? I mean, how hard would it be. It wouldn't be the first game having its audio altered to make it better

The reason the GameCube version has shitty audio is because the DSP effects from the Dreamcast's sound chip weren't ported over. Somebody would have to reprogram these DSP effects for the GameCube's sound chip. It might not even be possible.

Think I'll get the Dreamcast version.

Anybody else rockin this bad boi?

Attached: akura.jpg (291x300, 14K)

I had the VGA box, which was pretty decent. I'd be interested to see how that would work.

Well, there's the Sand Craft battles like pic related, which was a pretty big copy job that utterly failed in the end. Other than that was the part about characters in-battle but not up for their turn trading non-hitting attacks with their nearest opponents like SoA (and no other console JRPG at the time) did. It didn't ripoff SoA in its entirety, but the ship battles were and obvious ripoff.

forums.dolphin-emu.org/Thread-gc-skies-of-arcadia-legends--26018?pid=492907#pid492907

We need someone to get onto this.

Attached: 1495842669885.png (2472x3480, 3.16M)

>Gamecube
Compressed Mono Audio
Extra content (side quests and even a new story and character)
Graphically better
Lower encounter rate

>Dreamcast
Superior Stereo Audio
Pinta's Quest if you have a VMU
Highest image quality if you have a VGA box (480i vs 480p)
Higher encounter rate

I'd recommend Dreamcast over Gamecube since the sound quality is just so much better it really ruins the game to hear a butchered version throughout.

Dreamcast OST: youtube.com/watch?v=z5oERC4cD8g&
Gamecube OST: youtube.com/watch?v=sAxPyLbsYJQ

There's probably a few more nitpicky issues like how the Gamecube has small insignificant graphical errors and is technically easier due to higher exp distribution, but if you can play through FF7 you can play through Dreamcast SoA no problem.

It's up to you though, Dolphin can emulate SoA beautifully and in 3D so it might be the better choice if you have a good rig.

It actually does a good job in breaking it all down, although he could've used a better audio choice since I feel the opening in both sounds fine even if there is a noticeable difference in both.

Wasn't there a patch for the music in the GC version?

The only ones able to do it justice are these guys. You know it's true. The tone would be kept, and the world would be as amazing and expanded. And the reworked soundtrack would be earkino again.

Attached: 27a52c0c26fb6a100bc52ccaedbd6a2e[1].png (1200x630, 931K)

I've been trying to get into the game, but the battle system just annoys the shit out of me. I keep hearing people praise this game but it just isn't doing anything for me.

I don't like how you have to put in everyone's commands at the beginning of every turn, without knowing which order they're going to execute in or when the enemies are going to attack. I don't like that you can't use Focus to raise your SP and then use it on another character in the same turn. Magic costing SP makes it useless IMO, especially when you can buy items that let you cast magic without consuming MP or SP. MP is extremely limited in early game which further makes using magic pointless. Shared SP, high boss damage, frequent status ailments, and enemy counter-attacks mean that I spend every boss fight with only my strongest character focused on damage while the weaker ones focus on healing, dispelling status ailments, and raising SP for more powerful attacks.

Ship battles are kind of neat, but they feel so scripted. I feel like all you have to do is react to the colors and symbols on the grid.

One day I hope someone makes a mod to have Fina in the pirate outfit be playable.

Gotta give some props to Vigoro's battleship too. That thing is so fucking retarded I love it.

Attached: The_Draco.jpg (640x480, 36K)

the xenoblade titles have bar none the best area designs of any RPG

Skies of Arcadia, remade on the Switch by Monolithsoft. All the content of the Game Cube version, reworked HD graphics. Re-recorded music and effects. Islands expanded-on to a degree where random encounters are replaced with in-field encounters that still follows the Turn-based, SP-building fun of the original yet faster-paced. Any island with a dock/flat land can be explored for exp/discoveries/etc. Ship battles follow the same in-field encounter style, can attract both additional enemies (and/or Blue Rogue allies) depending on placement/decisions. Grander Gigas fights. More recruitable shipmates.

Nah, not seeing it.

S-stop it :'(

Attached: skies-of-arcadia-pic2_zpsfaab3d8f.jpg (480x360, 47K)

Also make discoveries into on foot instead of press a button while in your ship. If every island can be landed on and explored.

why would monolith bother remaking skies of arcadia when they could just do baten kaitos instead?

Are you just looking for things to complain about or have you never played a turn-based jrpg in your life?

Over compensation much. God that game had so much beautiful innuendo.

Fuck you, user. Stop making me IMAGINE

Attached: 1522100184604.png (858x1035, 728K)

Why not both?

I've played turn-based jrpgs, this one just has a lot of annoying things about it. Bosses' regular attacks hitting for 50% of some party members' health means I can't use those party members to attack at all. If they get countered and then get hit on the boss's turn, they'll die in a single turn. So instead I have to have them just heal on every turn so that I can at least still get SP from them being alive.

Are you retarded or do you not remember the number of sky-bound discoveries?

>I am bad at the game

Fuck, I'd be plenty happy if we simply got a few more rpgs with contemporary or scifi-style settings, but aside from MegaTen and Pokemon (plus a few shittier monster collecting ripoff franchises) I don't recall many recent titles doing that either. Would help counteract the mass of generic fantasy.

This, hell might as well throw Solatorobo in while we're at it.

Attached: 1564493400636.jpg (592x335, 51K)

The sequel is even better. Also fairy girls.

literally git gud

>cloud seas and floating islands are a classic, yet I feel like I don't see them that much.
granblue uses this setting if relink ever comes out

Got those games on my backlog. Been there since I got them a decade ago because, while I know they're good, I hate card mechanics.

I don't know much about Grandblue besides doujins, would I need to know anything about it before getting in Relink, or is it newfag friendly?

Well if I'm doing something wrong, I wouldn't mind knowing what it is. I just finished the temple in the sand area. Vyse is Lv16, Aika Lv15, Fina Lv14. I don't know what I can do to avoid getting 2-shotted aside from guarding or grinding.

Pretty much this. I'm sure Skies of Arcadia would bounce off me if I visited it for the first time today, but I fell in love with it hard when I was 13.

Who do you think gets to be captain in the bedroom?

relink is supposed to be a standalone story, so i'd imagine you don't need to play the mobage but who knows when it's coming out

Is this cutie part of the crew?

Normal levels for that point are like 12 all around, you're either exaggerating about normal attacks doing that much damage or you're just incurably bad at video games

Yes

Attached: 1534088918429.webm (816x650, 273K)

She was also part of my teenage wank bank.

In theory yes but you're better off giving her job to the buff, shirtless Arabian guy since he provides better bonuses.

Generic fantasy would be a dramatic improvement, the current anime aesthetic is absolutely repulsive.

Attached: Corrin-M.jpg (3072x2560, 1.44M)

Never getting a Skies of Arcadia remake or sequel hurts because there's a lot of cool ideas and mechanics that would be easily expanded with modern hardware.

Fuck me I want it so bad.

Normally this is the part where I say "Now I buy your game". But in this case it will be emulation.

Ditto.

The boss was doing over 500 damage per attack. Fina's HP is about 1100. I even bought her the armor from the town before I came here. I'm playing the Gamecube version if that makes any difference.

In case you misunderstood me, she's part of the crew in the sense she's recruitable for your ship's crew. She's not a party member.

Attached: 1534085381967.jpg (1024x768, 135K)

Let me guess you didn't equip it

>the ixataka dancer with the absolutely useless crew stat because ship value was a dropped mechanic but they couldnt bother to give her something else because reasons?

Switch port pleae

How's the Dreamcast version emulateable?

Attached: ff15_crew1.jpg (800x444, 80K)

Recruitable is good enough.

It's a boss, they're meant to hit hard. You still shouldn't have to be guarding constantly, and if you made it that far without picking up even a slight idea of what you should be doing you probably some issues that advice won't solve. Make a point of carrying plenty of healing items and prioritize learning purple and green magic. Rush Vyse's and Aika's S Moves. Never run from battle, ever. If all else fails spend about 2 hours grinding. This is one of the easiest games to break by grinding ever made.

FUCK NO!

Here's what I got from my save after that boss, right before the Gigas ship battle.

Now, if you're female and flat, then that's fine.

is the story pretty good in this game? I really like the character designs.

GC version also gives the player more moonberries from battle, which are needed to learn special attacks. Someone said the DC version barely gives enough for all moves and you can hardly farm them.

Attached: stay2.jpg (2048x1536, 276K)

How is SoA with the missables? Do you need a guide if you want to 100% in one playthrough?

It's not that the game is hard, hell I beat the boss on my first try, it's just that I feel like I'm stuck to relying on a single boring strategy for every boss so far. I tried to mix it up a bit in that boss fight to have Fina use her regen ability and have Aika put the +25% Atk/Def spell on Vyse, but then the boss simply turned Vyse to stone and undid it. So saving up all the SP to cast those spells ended up feeling like a waste. I'm better off saving SP for Vyse to use Cutlass Fury while Aika and Fina just focus on staying alive and generating SP.

Same reason there’s no more OC being produced: the world has gotten smaller.

Keeping in mind this game was originally released in the late 90's, the story is very good. It's not exactly groundbreaking by today's standards, but the characters are all unique and fulfill their roles very well. There's even more attention paid to worldbuilding than in Trails. The protagonist is unironically one of the best in RPG history and canonically ends up in a relationship with both of the female leads

The treasure chests are the only things that are missable, but a lot of endgame content is locked behind finding at least 90% of them. If you're not using a guide you'll miss at least a few of them on your first run, and some of the discoveries (things in the overworld you can find to make money) you won't EVER find without a guide.

yes, you can miss discoveries if you proceed through the main story too fast without exploring

>Skies Of Arcadia

Attached: ManOfCulture.jpg (1024x512, 51K)

I though this thread was about world design and setting, not the characters.

All three of those things put me off Fire Emblem.

The story's pretty basic: get the macguffins and fight the bad guys
The world itself is really captivating though
You pretty much need a guide, yeah

You can farm Moonberries in the DC game, but it's a boring pain in the ass. Just fly near Looper Nest, those fuckers drop them every now and then. Just equip Black Map and have access to Rain of Swords (or another hit-all attack until you can get RoS).

Yeah, I looked it up, which is why I said hardly. It takes a lot longer than in the GC version where you sometimes get them from normal battles during your playthrough.

That was not the image I posted.

You tell me

Origins has much better gameplay and localization, and I liked the limited party more, but the atmosphere and pacing are kinda hurt by all the reused areas.
Though it unironically has one of my favorite JRPG battle systems of all time. The hype as fuck announcer just brought it to the next level.

They're great, you should try and get around to them. I played em for the first time earlier this year on my Wii U and they have 10/10 art and music as well as some really cool gameplay and story beats.

Attached: guillo.png (188x175, 91K)

I'm playing the first one and I had to take a break because the card mechanics got old rather quickly. Also the voice acting is absolutely horrendous.

The best part is that Vyse doesn't even comment on it or even think about choosing. The only thing the game does is give Aika a very brief arc where she's worried Vyse might love Fina, but then she realizes she cares enough about Fina as a friend that she's fine with sharing. And that's that.

But is Guillo a boy, or a girl?

Nothing wrong with the ship combat outside of precanned specials cutscenes
Ie grendels stupid rock throw

user, you DID play the game, didn't you?
She's technically both, but I always go with girl in my head. It fits with her squabbles with Milly.

I never beat it, I just remember an earlier scene where another character wonders.

This absolute unit destroyed my team the first time on my first playthrough.

Attached: Skies of Arcadia.jpg (568x432, 66K)

Creativity back then felt fresh because it was new in games despite often being based upon old folklore.

There are twists some can do such using etymology to get a better understanding of old folklore such as elves being depicted as purified ghosts of dead humans awaiting bloodline reincarnation. Sadly, many developers just want to treat fantasy creatures as different formed humans.

>canonically ends up in a relationship with both of the female leads
seriously?

Like I said, true alphamale through and through

She's one of a line puppets made to kill Malpercio back before humans lived in the sky. Guillo for whatever reason was being controlled by two witches instead of one, hence why her voice is both a male and a female voice overlayed on top of each other.

Attached: 1563820980982.jpg (640x481, 38K)

Xenoblade, Persona, Nier or Fire Emblem, which all used to be niche, are literally selling millions, yet Sega is too fucking retarded to port Skies of Arcadia and get easy money, fuck them

You see both Aika and Fina crushing on him, happens, then in the ending scenes you have both Aika and Fina more or less hanging off of Vyse's arms.

I'd kill a man just for an HD texture port to a relevant console, I just want to go back.

He didn't earn the title of legend for nothing

It's downplayed but the implications are strong enough that it's not really left ambiguous as to what's happening

casual filter.

No, this is a blue board

SOA needs a retranslation. The translators openly admitted they just chucked the script out and made shit up/censored the fuck out of it and changed everything.

How has SEGA not re-released Skies of Arcadia on modern platforms?

Attached: aika4.png (532x579, 454K)

The translation we got was fine, except for them not knowing that there aren't any a's in "liquor"

Tbh the hardest story bosses are bleglok and the warden/executioner anyway, due to lavk of healing items.
Youre right though, magic is a waste of time and focusing/healing with the girls to let vyse attack is top strats.

It's more that they translated it, threw the original out, then 'spiced up'/rewrote their translation to be sillier.

You should be using attack magic with the girls, you don't need 2 dedicated healers if you know what you're doing.

Theyre dedicated focusers with aika dealing heals when needed. I feel letting vyse use his specials every 1/2 turns does more damage than a magic box

After seeing the absolute state of remasters it's a blessing.

Thanks for saving that, i made it!

I never played Skies of Arcadia, but I have it on gamecube since my brother did. All I remember from it is the guy with the eyepatch going HUH! CUTLASS FURY!

The Expressions on Aika's Face wins me over from Fina. She is so expressive in contrast to Fina who just grimaces. Be sad. Smile and a stern face.

This is why western developers will never do it for me. They always have to make their characters edgy or political.

It was autistic as fuck but the small community was based enough to make it one of my most pleasant childhood memories, even though I played an absolutely retarded schizophrenic assassin from Valua. Yeah, there were extremely large and cancerous 'RPG' boards with huge communities run by banhappy janny cliques, but there were also very small ones with 10-15 members like the one I mentioned. It really feels like it was a different era, something like that wouldn't be possible these days.

Sticks is directly based on Aika, yes

Based. God, take me back.

That backstory was about Ramirez, Piastol herself was completely incidental

If his backup guys increm him and he decides to abuse his tackle attack, and you then get unlucky with your character positioning, he can be a complete shithead. The inability to manually position your characters actually is something that annoys me, knowing what kind of attacks your enemies do and being able to position your guys to avoid line-effect attacks and such would be nice.

Daccat

Gamecube overall is the better game
More content, more side-quests
less encounters but more exp/gold in exchange, making for a less tedious game

The one area the dreamcast beats it in is higher quality music.
Only play the DC version if you're an audiophile and low quality midi makes your ears bleed.

Also forgot, the Dreamcast also has the VMU game.

If you don't mind the Battles go for Dreamcast. You will level much faster if you don't run away. A true Swashbuckling Air Pirate always stands and fight mostly. (Except for times when its inevitable.

Not even. That thing was just a normal fixed cannon that fired single shots, all you have to do to avoid it is fly to the side.

Anyone else ever notice that they don't have a North America analog?
>Ixa'taka is South America
>Valua is Europe
>Nasr is the Middle East and North Africa
>Yafutoma is Asia (mostly Japan)
>Lands of Ice is Antarctica
>If Mid Ocean is anything it's the Caribbean since its pirate land, with the Silver Continent being Atlantis
The best places to stick another land would be the North Ocean or Looper Land since both are desolate as fuck, which I always thought was odd. They're so empty.

>character
Vyse. But the real charm of the game is all the characters interacting with one another. I especially like Aika and Vyse's interactions

>sky battle
Recumen and then into fighting the Lynx. On my first playthough I actually got softlocked here and I think it's one of the only places in the game where this is possible. It's impossible to leave the dungeon without initiating the fight, and there's no place to heal inside. My Fina was underleveled and I used up all my MP in the boss fight and all 3 characters were 1 hit from dying, so I couldn't even go back into the dungeon to level off of random encounters.

>discovery
Black Moonstones. The Dark Rift was always piqued my interest and I found the idea that another moon existed once really interesting.

Hmm if only there like an extra color not represented by a current land or something

Attached: Black_Moon_Stone.jpg (256x256, 11K)

Realizing that one of my favourite characters from one of my favourite games is also a reference to one of the best characters in my favourite movie was a serious mindfuck. But honestly in many ways Skies feels more like old school Miyazaki films like Naussica and Castle in the Sky than Ni No Kuni does.

Threadly reminder that Vigoro wore a chastity belt + codpiece with a lock on it and wore the key to said lock around his neck

He had to contain the beast

Attached: LewdVigoro.png (476x440, 428K)

I always wanted to know what was up with the Black Moonstones, like if the Black Moon existed what happened to it, if there had been a corresponding continent like every other moon had, and if it had been destroyed by the Dark Rift (which is supported by all the land you find inside it.) It would've been perfect sequel bait too, even if they did go to space (or travel back in time, I bet there were a ton of smaller islands that got fucked by the moonstons) to keep the exploration theme going.

Isn't Vigoro more or less the top admiral of Valua now that most of his coworkers are dead?

I think the implication is that the black moonstone is what made sky continents a thing to begin with.

It's not boring for one

He became a pirate.

Yet they're only found in the vicinity of the Dark Rift and not elsewhere. If all the islands had some relation to Black Moonstones, then someone digging up some tiny island would've found a couple by now.

I’ve honestly never played them. The look feels off to me and the animation looks too much like ponyo.

It's embarrassing how low quality modern JRPGs are compared to Skies. Not even just in regards to the original world setting, the sheer passion for detail and sense of adventure, exploration and wonder are simply not present today. Each attempt Obsidian makes to create their own universe rather than simply deconstruct a setting made by others, has been more disastrous than the last. Aside from the outdated gameplay and lifeless cities, Pillars of Eternity's only consistency has been its lack of excitement and ineffective use of combat mechanics, all to make magic unmagical, to make action seem inert.

Perhaps the die was cast when Sawyer vetoed the idea of making anything at all innovative or original; he made sure the game would never be mistaken for a work of art that meant anything to anybody, just ridiculously profitable nostalgia pandering to ageing Baldur's Gate fans. Pillars of Eternity might be anti-casual(or not), but it’s certainly the anti-Divinity series in its refusal of spontaneity, fun and excitement.

>a-at least the writing was good though

"No!"

The writing is dreadful; the narrative was terrible. As I played, I noticed that every time I engaged in dialogue with an NPC the game presented me with a Wiki-page style infodump instead of anything resembling actual human conversation.

I began marking on the back of an envelope every time this was repeated. I stopped only after I had marked the envelope several dozen times. I was incredulous. Sawyer's mind is so governed by obsession with pointless minutiae of the lore that he has no other style of writing.

Later I read a lavish, loving review of Pillars of Eternity by the same David Gaider. He wrote something to the effect of, "If these kiddies are playing Obsidian games at 17 or 18, then when they get older they will go on to enjoy Dragon Age II." And he was quite right. He was not being ironic. When you play "Pillars of Eternity" you are, in fact, trained to shill for Bioware.

I'd rather have it like Arc the Lad, action combat is only good if done by a company that actually makes them. Sega doesn't know shit about that.

I don't get why the gameplay is a sacred cow to the other replies, though. It's pretty bog standard outside of the spirit system which ends up not meaning much.

I also get a special, melancholy feeling in these desolated and depopulated landscapes. It's also the most mysterious part of the world outside of the Dark Rift, since we have no idea what happened to the people there.

I always figured the Dark Rift was suggestive of another buried continent like Soltis. Soltis's burial was apparently responsible for creating all the other rifts in the game. Would seem logical something similar is creating the Dark Rift.

I mean, the sleeves actually being physically ripped is at least a little less pants on head retarded than the weird shoulder windows they ultimately went with

True but that appearance he has there screams his personality would of been different

This game is pure comfy. With a good combat system it could have been the fourth best JRPG of the sixth generation, behind SMT3, BOF5 and Mother 3.

Pso2 is shit tho :/
But i get what you are talking about. Im still playing on Ephinea

Well that's going to be a long while

Definitely a possibility, but the Dark Rift is larger and much worse. If anything buried is causing it, then it must be quite a lot bigger than Soltis. At least something like Valua sized.

2 and 3 probably killed it.

How many of them are Sega, though?

3 seemed to be decently popular with japan, and still has somewhat active and vocal community here in the west. I know for a fact that money-wise VC devs liked pandering to fans of 3 with stuff like their mobile games and such.
That aside, 1 was more popular in US than in JP wasn't it?

Game can sell well and be popular while still flopping, like for example with Dead Space, if the cost of placing the game out there is more than what you get back in returns. That said no clue how well VC4 did, but I only seen positive comments on it and alot of youtube attention.

Nice
I still have a save set for the part where you get to play as Aika in Nasrad myself

I used to keep that exact same file myself, made me sad that Skies of Arcadia did not let you switch leader character for overworld despite so many jRPGs having same option.

This.

I also hate how in JRPGs, despite the setting, still has trendy shit, like meido cafes and french cuisine.

That'd be really cool, but I'm fine with just being gigachad Vyse. Plus that moment where you're like "oh shit I get to be Aika now" wouldn't be as special if that option was available.
Something to consider for a remaster I suppose.

The shit that pisses me off the most is hot spring baths. Oh my god, you goddamned Jap writers can't have a setting without an onsen, can you? Doesn't matter if it's fantasy or sci-fi, modern or medieval, they always gotta have a bloody hot springs scene. It's probably an even worse trope than beach episodes in anime. I've gone from being neutrak with onsen to absolutely hating them thanks to the over-saturation.

I too enjoy picking cherries. Favorite fruit.

>I too enjoy picking cherries. Favorite fruit.
Cherrypicking of what? That list includes some of the most critically acclaimed and beloved jrpgs ever made suxh as Chrono Trigger, Xenogears, Skies of Arcadia, etc.

Freedom Force is a beloved wrpg?

I wish that game had been better. So much promise, but ultimately shallow.

>you have an airship from the start of the game
>game literally takes place in the sky (i.e. you should be able to fly anywhere)
>it's still linear as fuck and completely on rails because the fucking sky is somehow shaped like a corridor

>aimless, open world game good

Well, Freedom Force has a 4.4. out of 5 on GOG, so apparently it is beloved?

>jiggle physics
This game was truly ahead of its time. Sequel when

If you're going to make the game with the premise that you're a fucking sky pirate with an airship from the start of the game. then you better damn well allow to explore the player freely. Otherwise, what is the point of making a game with that premise?

It really speaks to the biggest problems I have with jrpgs. Almost every jrpg uses the same rigid structure, and they seem utterly incapable of deviating from that (besides a few exceptions like Dark Souls).

Attached: 1545606237067.png (1267x785, 99K)

Both extremes suck. Right now I'm playing DQVIII, which does a great job of giving you open space to run about in if you like, but no choice paralysis.

Why would a sky pirate be able to fly around any hazard any more than a real pirate could sail through a hurricane?

>Why would a sky pirate be able to fly around any hazard any more than a real pirate could sail through a hurricane?

>it's okay that the game came up with a bullshit obstacle that somehow makes fucking AIR impassable to justify its corridor design
Why are you being such a pathetic apologist?

The hazards are nonsense anyway. This isn't the sea. There's no reason you simply can't fly around them.

You do realize that a hurricane is scary not just because of the waves, but because of the wind too? The air isn't 'emptiness' user.
>There's no reason you simply can't fly around them
But the game gives you a reason for every single obstacle?
>You can't pass reefs because the rocks will tear your hull apart (just like a real reef)
>You can't pass rifts because they're windstorms and you'll just get thrown around (like a storm)
>You can't sail over it because the your engine can't handle the thin air (true to real life flight)
>You can't sail under it because the air pressure is too high and would crush you (true to real life submarines)
>The Dark Rift is a permanent hurricane, you need to do something legendary and special to sail through that
What about any of that is silly? Do you think there shouldn't be anything but perfectly calm, free, open sky? In this sky islands setting? Entirely unlike the ocean or any landscape?

You realize your ship gets upgraded several times throughout the game to let you explore more freely and easily, right?
It's not like discovery hunting's that fun anyways. It's more of a chore really.

>It's not like discovery hunting's that fun anyways. It's more of a chore really.
Disagree. Discoveries are one of my favorite aspects of the game.

Then just wait til you get the Delphinus? What's the problem?

>You realize your ship gets upgraded several times throughout the game to let you explore more freely and easily, right?
Yes, and? That's how EVERY jrpg handles exploration, with the game only opening up after specific story beats.

Again, why even bother making a sky pirate jrpg if it plays out like any bogstandard jrpg.

Defining FFXII, Radiant Historia, and Mana Khemia as 'science fantasy' is stretching the definition so gaping wide you can see straight from its asshole to the sky. It's not exactly hard to find JRPGs with most of those settings, you realize? I think the only things that might be hard are pure post-apoc (though Japan loves mixing it with everything else, see Nier Automata) and superheroes, which is a fucking given because superheroes are a pure American cultural thing.

I'm not the shitposting frogfag, user. I just disagreed with that part of your post. Hell, I don't think he's even played the game, he's using such vague platitudes to describe it.

>What about any of that is silly?
So those reefs and rifts exist in the entire world? Why can't you simply fly a few kilometers above, below or above around them?

And you have yet to address the question. Then what is the point of giving you an airship from the start of the game if it doesn't make any difference and travel is still completely on rails?

You really are a cum-guzzling faggot who will slurp up any excuse from the devlopers cock', aren't you? Do you have no capacity for basic thought? Again, the developers CHOSE to make a game with the premise that you can fly from the start of the game. Nobody forced them to. So if they're going to thn come up with all sorts of contrived obstacles to railroad the player, thus defeating the whole point of giving you an airship, then that's completely idiotic because they're contradicting their own premise.

I really don't see the problem. Sounds like you just don't like jrpgs.

>Defining FFXII, Radiant Historia, and Mana Khemia as 'science fantasy' is stretching the definition so gaping wide you can see straight from its asshole to the sky.
So what else would you call those settings?. Those games all mix futuristic technology with magic, which is the very definition of science fantasy. FF12 for example literally hax X-Wings.

Attached: Totally not futuristic technology.jpg (760x430, 74K)

>Why can't you simply fly a few kilometers above, below or above around them?
>>You can't sail over it because the your engine can't handle the thin air (true to real life flight)
>>You can't sail under it because the air pressure is too high and would crush you (true to real life submarines)
Why don't you just jump over the mountains, user? Why do you walk through the mountain pass?
>What's the point of an airship
What's the point of a boat if it can't sail through hurricanes? What's the point of your feet if they can't jump over mountains? Why isn't the world on permanent tcl mode? Your shitposting focuses entirely on this premise that the sky, this fantasy land sky, should work entirely unlike any landscape or seascape in real life OR in any videogame out there. Most 'open world' games get around it by either setting the entire game on a flat topography (unrealistic) or by letting you hump your way up cliffs which is utterly ridiculous in its own way (Bethesda.)

Obligatory SoA reply for whenever these threads come up

Fuck other games for being incapable of capturing the spirit and freedom of being a pirate. Sea of Thieves was such a wasted concept and who knows if anyone will invest into that genre in the future. Triple A games feel very safe by design, especially in western games, so I wonder if we'll ever get to see a fully realized game where you can sail around and discover cool shit. Wind Waker is a great game in it's own right but I want a god damned customizable ship with an optional crew I find by sailing around a terrifying and beautiful ocean

It's such an unrealistic scale and design but it's fun to dream

Attached: worth_it.jpg (256x256, 13K)

A magical airship is all it takes to become science fantasy? Then why aren't Arcanum and Planescape classified as science fantasy in your book? Both of those settings feature airships. Hell, the fucking start of Arcanum is you surviving an airship crash. You picked so poorly. FFXII is one of the least technological final fantasies since 5, you so obviously didn't play it.
>So what would you call those settings
FFXII would be 'high fantasy' by your definition, Mana Khemia probably would too (since all the magic and 'technology' in the setting is fueled by alchemy) and Radiant Historia would be steampunk as all the technology in the game is steam-driven (and magic existing by your criteria, does not disqualify it, because magic also exists in Arcanum.)

Phantom Hourglass had customization on your ship but no crew, and an emptier ocean than Wind Waker. All the pieces are out there, but unassembled.

>What's the point of a boat if it can't sail through hurricanes? What's the point of your feet if they can't jump over mountains?
What do you mean, what is the point? You do realize open-world RPGs exist, right, and they give you access to the game world from the start of the game, with no artificial roadblocks?

Heck, even a game like Morrowind has more freeform flying than Skies of Arcadia.

What are you even arguing against here? Skies of Arcadia should be completely on rails...because, why exactly? Again, games exist where you sail a boat ot fly some airborne vehicle. They can havee hazards, yes, but they also allow for ways around them.

>Why isn't the world on permanent tcl mode?
You can't possibly be this retarded, can you? You're using the realism argument for a game about continents and islands magically floating in the sky?

You can't have your imaginary good game. But you can have this shitty game with the basic premise!

Attached: suikodeniv.png (640x448, 563K)

You're criticizing other games for failing to live up to Skies of Arcadia's 'exploration', despite SoA being completely on rails and having about as much organic exploration as a Call of Duty campaign?

What manner of mongoloid are you?

Attached: 1551463810724.jpg (528x792, 66K)

I think you've got this one down user, but the jpg upthread is still valid in so far as there are way more proper sci-fi and real world settings in WRPG land.

Not really, because now you're completely trying to change the argument. Nobody was ever trying to argue about quantity here, that random post above evoked a quality argument, which is why you posted that picture at.

She's still there

>A magical airship is all it takes to become science fantasy? Then why aren't Arcanum and Planescape classified as science fantasy in your book? Both of those settings feature airships. Hell, the fucking start of Arcanum is you surviving an airship crash. You picked so poorly.
Now you're just being dishonest. You don't survive an airship crash in Arcanum, you survive a zeppeling crash, which is entirely in line with steampunk teechnology. Look at that FF12 airship. That's something that could have come straight from Star Wars. It's not remotely the same thing.

>Radiant Historia would be steampunk
Nope. Because of shit like this:

>Thaumatech is the name of the technology used to manipulate Mana, and allows humans to gain the power to perform otherwise impossible things. While it is similar to the power of Flux, it was thought as a more mechanical system, which means even people with no special knowledge or power can use it. In addition to weapons such as Thaumachines and Gauntlets, Thaumatech for civilian uses such as lifts and air conditioning has also been developed

Try to read that with a straight face and make sense of it. Not only is the level of technology far beyond steampunk leevels (air conditioning? seriously). It's literally saying 'there is magic, but you don't have to be skilled in magic to use it, so anyone can enjoy its benefits'. Its literally the most laziest kind of world building to handhave having to explain modern technological conveniences like lifts and air conditioning. That's the problem with this kind of science fantasy setting. It's just a poorly thought out mash up between magic and futuristic tech.

Attached: 1550323112633.jpg (629x419, 53K)

>Hello, didn't read my whole post. Go back and try your bait again.
Explain to me how Skies of Arcadia would be ruined if you could actually fly through the sky instead of it just being a linear corridor?

>You survive a zeppeling (sic) crash
The word 'airship' is an actual word with a real life definition. It absolutely applies to zeppelins, user.
>Look at that FF12 airship.
Visuals are all that matters here?
>That's something that could have come straight from Star Wars
Star Wars ships run on technological mumbo jump. FF12 airships run on crystal magic. Not a single slice of science is evoked in regards to them.
>Nope because of this
>Read that with a straight face
Now your criteria for discounting something is based on how seriously you, personally can take it? How is that even an argument and not simply an autistic screech?

>A magical airship is all it takes to become science fantasy?

>Airship designed and built by YPA, a shipwright's guild of Archades. Officially named the YPA-GB47 Test Combat Fighter, production was halted after the completion of a single test model due to dissatisfaction on the part of the Imperial customer with the costly dual-movable-wing design. Scheduled for scrapping, Balthier liberated the ship at the last moment. Balthier has since modified the Strahl to his tastes with a new engine and numerous other augmentations, making it a very different ship from the one envisaged by its YPA inventors.

>totally magical!

Attached: 1552492891652.png (800x729, 48K)

>I'll ignore your other example and then post this text that doesn't even mention whether the airship is technological or magical

Jeez user, why would I explain anything to you when you keep ignoring my examples and arguments to restate your complaint (which was addressed with those same posts you refuse to answer)? It's pretty clear you don't want a discussion. At this point, what you are doing is obviously just coming in here, seeing that people like a thing, and starting a shitstorm based on limited knowledge and hearsay for no reason other than the fact that it upsets you to see people talking about a game you don't like. I'd advise anyone with sense to just ignore your bait from now on rather than feeding you.

Attached: 1399866313273.gif (280x210, 1.41M)

I think SoA's strengths lie in it's ideas and sincerity but you are right with the rails. All the gated parts require incremental story progression to access can be a real pain for the eager, especially coupled with the encounter rate makes even moving around the open air feel restricting. Despite this there were a lot of great ideas that have potential with modern game resources. Finding discoveries, collecting crew members, growing your island base, and seeing boss monsters are just some of the features the game uses as incentive to look around for things outside of the main story.

I think of Sea of Thieves as the antithesis of SoA given that it gives you so much more freedom with practically nothing to do. Comparing the two feels crass since Sea of Thieves has an entirely different goal as a game but it does serve as a benchmark for how sea exploration works right now.

>Now your criteria for discounting something is based on how seriously you, personally can take it? How is that even an argument and not simply an autistic screech?
Do you have that much trouble reading basic English? You said Radiant Historia was steampunk. What exactly is steampunkish about 'technology' whose sole purpose is to let you use magic without having to learn how to use magic? And said 'magic' conveniently translates to modern technological marvels such as air conditioning, which is far beyond the level of Steampunk technology.

This isnt'steampunk, it's just another science fantasy setting.

Attached: 1555516508791.jpg (667x593, 242K)

Stop arguing with WRPG-kun already, it'll lead to nothing anyway.

I'd say the biggest issue with jrpg settings is too often, they are just Tolkien-like worlds dressed up in superficially different skins.

A good way to demonstrate what I mean is to look at how jrpgs utilize their settings. For instance, if you look at wrpgs that aren't high fantasy, like say Fallout, Deus Ex, Jagged Alliance, Vampire The Masquerade, etc. they tend to incorporate aspects of their setting in their gameplay. And I don't mean things like characters using guns. I mean stuff like Fallout having a barter economy, which is logical in a post-apocalyptic society where monetization has broken down. Or how cybernetic augmentations in Deus Ex take the place of a more traditional RPG system. Or the whole mercenary company aspect of Jagged Alliance.

It's obvious that a game's setting should inform its gameplay. But jrpgs really don't do this. Even jrpgs that take place in modern or futuristic settings, such as Persona or Xenoblade, still revolve around typical high fantasy cliches like dungeon crawling and god-killing shenanigans. The characters even still use medieval weaponry. Heck, Symphony of the Night is a Japanese RPG where you play as a vampire, yet you can't even bite anyone to drink blood, meaning you can't even fulfil the basic function of a vampire. How lame is that? Or take Lost Odyssey, a game where you play as immortals, yet you can somehow still die from combat.

Another baffling trope is when jrpgs take place in a world such as various Final Fantasy games, where the technology and level of civilization is far more advanced than our own, yet the world still functions like a pre-industrial society, with small settlements separated by vast, uncharted expanses of wilderness filled with wild beasts and roving bandits, and characters still using medieval weaponry. What is the point of going with a futuristic setting if it's functionally and thematically identical to a medieval fantasy world?

I wonder if Enrique realizes that him bleaching Moegi is just going to lead to his hapa offspring (or theirs) with a chip on their shoulder and way less morals than him using that descent to justify an invasion of Yafutoma. There's no way Valua's going to completely shake off all corruption and warmongering forever just because of one good king, not even with all the Lands of Ice to direct their expansionist tendencies towards (mostly because it's a frozen shithole.)

Attached: 1363476185663.png (200x200, 22K)

tl;dr
Why do people come into threads about things they don't like just to announce that they don't like thing?

That or an allied Valua and Yafutoma will scheme an invasion of politically isolated Nasr at some point.

>Why do people come into threads to reply to post that they don't like just to announce that they don't like that post?

Um, I just want to say that I enjoyed Skies of Arcadia, still do in fact. I also really liked this game. it reminded me of Skies of Arcadia a lot. Like, holy shit, was it pretty much a carbon copy of the setting and plot. It even had Discoveries, but it was set in the real world!
Am I the only one who's played this?
Also, I wonder if the author of One Piece played Skies of Arcadia. Some people claim there's some parallels

Attached: nostalgia_ds_esrb.jpg (407x355, 31K)

You didn't answer my question tho

I played this game and had fun, but in the end it feels very much like it can't live up to Skies. The characters, world, and sense of adventure just don't reach the same level.

I'm so dissapointed with this shit, fuck...
