Fishing can get you a pickaxe which is equivalent to the crimson/shadow pickaxe without having the go through bosses. Depends on your playstyle. Also good for not fucking your world up via corruption for some hardmode ores.

This. The alternative is mining the ores yourself, but everything in hardmode now kills you in 2 hits so it sucks. Also if you're playing multiplayer, there are good substitute trinkets in case some other faggot got to the floating islands first

You can get ore and bars (as well as other hard mode fishing crate loot) as soon as you enter hardmode by defeating the wall of flesh.

In my first post I said that those specific potions are crutches, not that all potions are crutches, and fishing IS a crutch, none of the rewards are actually that helpful but are tecnically "the best" of their categories (not even that sometimes)

I have never been able to get the PDA/Cell Phone because of this. Every time I start up a new world, and tell myself I'm not gonna bother with the fishing bullshit. Every time, I start to get drops for the other items you need for the PDA, and then eventually give the fishing a shot. Every time, I get two of the pieces I need and the third one refuses to drop so I can never actually complete it.
