Where's the fucking GAME?
last time I looked this up on youtube, it was just people walking around ships and some space station roleplaying.
Then some guy was sperging out because when you would summon your $200,000USD Space Ship, it would be outside in the docking area. But by the time you ran out of the space station after summoning it, other players could easily blow it up, so he was stuck in this endless loop where he couldn't even get in it, every time it blew up it was costing him currency which you can only buy with real money or something.

Grand Theft Auto V cost a total budget of $265 million including marketing.
Has this even spent money on marketing yet?
Owen Evans
>$231 million dollars
plus the $46 million they got from an investor for "marketing squadron 42," the single-player game they've been working on for seven years with 300 full-time staff and 200+ contractors, that was supposed to be out in 2014, the was moved to 2015, then the website said ANSWER THE CALL 2016, which was later changed to 2017 and then 2018 before being removed, which they claimed would be done by the end of this year when they started releasing quarterly roadmap updates, but they're somehow 2 years behind on the roadmap after just 7+ months this year, and list every level of the game as "whitboxing" (untextured modeling).
if they don't hit beta by june of next year, calder (the investor) can liquidate the company, and they have liquidation preference, which means they get anything up to the $46 million they already put in, plus 10% of anything left over (since they own 10% of the company, while having 2 out of 5 board members)
i'm sure it's gonna be really, really good.

Star Citizen has received $231 million in donations.
cloudimperiumgames.com
It has also received $46 million from a minority investment from Clive’s family office and Keith’s Snoot Entertainment which is not included in the donations.
231+46=277

I expect at first it was hype. Marketing pushing a "World-changing experience" as the third coming of Christ.
Then comes the FOMO crowd, getting in because everyone else is getting in and OMG these pixels sure are limited!
Then there's the sunken cost believers. Those who have put some in and want to get something out of it so they put more in because "All the game needs is a bit more money".
Lucas Jackson
I have spent 450 bucks on this game and play it often.

Well what should he do at this point? The importance of SC has already been massively overblown by both him and his fans, as such: anything short of "best game ever made" will be a disappointment. He's basically chasing the wind, as expectations will always be a step ahead of the actual game and every improvement to the game will only further increase expectations.
John Jenkins
We have very different definitions of what "good" means apparently.

So they've said most of their development right now is getting Squadron 42 done, so anything being added to SC is basically also being used there.
Honestly it's been moving along at an alright pace for a year or two now, most people don't know that the early troubled development of SC was entirely caused by the engine choice.
Expect S42 around 2022 and SC in beta around there unless they make another breakthrough, but once SC adds any permanence and stops wiping it'd be cool to play right now.

Basically you can space truck, go into bunkers and shoot NPCs to steal space drugs to sell on the black market, look at the sights which honestly never stop blowing me away because of the budget and detail, run missions about killing bounties, and a few more scripted missions that are cool but aren't worth the pay out.
Also PvP until space cops come to slap your ass for being an ass. I love stealing space dad's ships and flexing it in all chat
I have many stories though, I don't know which to say. I grief a lot though.
Benjamin Flores
>bought a $100 ship/game pack way back in the day
>back then you could still ask people to add LTI(permanent insurance limited to the earliest backers) to your stuff by trading it to them and back
>at some point they removed that so LTI'd ships became a valued collectors item with a black market on r*ddit
>seeing signs of this becoming the vaporware it is today, but while most people were still believers, traded in my account for $150 Elite Dangerous+lifetime expansions and about $100 more worth of Steam games
really though this was a small profit to get off a sinking ship, there were real jews on that subr*ddit who made thousands of not tens of thousands of $$$ by buying&selling chris roberts' digital spaceships
Kayden Gonzalez
>Then some guy was sperging out because when you would summon your $200,000USD Space Ship, it would be outside in the docking area. New """""""""content"""""""""(ships to give us more of your fucking money)
Jack Jackson
Space stations are no kill zones and your ship repairs for free, it just takes time or few credits, of which you can earn in game. Missions that take 10 minutes pay out 6-10k and repairing you ship faster takes like 800.
I think there's moments that will never come from any other game ever and it's impressive when it works. But as of right now the flight model still needs tuning, and it still needs more gameplay for group play.
Being in your ship with your Bros chilling as you travel through lightspeed after a giant drug heist from other players is actually so fucking priceless.
Joshua Lewis
What is relevant is that people criticize it because they think it's not worth the money, no?

>Space stations are no kill zones and your ship repairs for free, it just takes time or few credits, of which you can earn in game.
Space stations aren't no kill zones if you need to use time or repairs. There's still a cost.

Grayson Evans

Essentially they'll be relying on donations for another 3 years, at least? Is it realistic? What does the general morale within the community seem like right now?
Adam Murphy
You can't fire at anyone on stations. I said that, did you read user?
Dylan James
Oh my god, this is still going on?
I remember the very first Star Shitizen campaigns YEARS ago, what happened since then? Is it still being developed, at least? Independently or did a big producer take up the mantle?
Nathan Bailey
It's still what it was already back then; vaporware with a development cost of an AAA game.
Ryder Lee
But you can blow up their ships. That's just as dumb as shooting people.
Dumb dumb game.
>last time I looked this up on youtube, it was just people walking around ships and some space station roleplaying.
That's all it is. the core game is BORING. There's just so little to do, it's so empty and soulless. Combat, both onthe ground and in space is unsatisfying. Every modern "open world" game has bored me to tears.
Jeremiah Walker
>vaporware
I mean I like to shit on SC as much as anyone, but it's objectively not vaporware,
Ethan Morris
Chris Robert's company is still independently developing it, but the budget and aspirations have ballooned since then. THey're technically making like 6 games at the same time (single player game, MMO, etc) and it's the most ambitious in terms of size of any game ever. They've had to scale back massively on the number of worlds.
And it's still incomplete with no release date.
Caleb Adams
Define vaporware for me then.
Matthew Richardson
about 98% of it is
Robert Bailey
vapourware
/ˈveJpəwɛː/

nounINFORMAL•COMPUTING
noun: vaporware
software or hardware that has been advertised but is not yet available to buy, either because it is only a concept or because it is still being written or designed.
Lincoln Turner
They don't need the money since their income increases as it becomes closer to being playable, and the community morale is high since the updates are meaty and it looks more like it should every patch, however gameplay mechanics change so much sometimes it's hard to see what's really going to be in the final game.
Also to the thread: it's not vaporware, stop saying this dumb fucking meme
Hunter Morales
but it's not a scam

Fun is subjective I guess. You can fly a starship around a boring lifeless starsystem and pick up crates.

How do you spend 200 million dollars and not have something presentable? Do they publish their budget?
Oliver Lee
The more money they get, the more they feel they have to offer in terms of features to justify that. Then the project gets so big they need a constant flow of money to keep it going. THey have hundreds of people working on the game, so just to maintain status quo requires tens of millions of dollars.
In short: This is poorly thought out and is a sprawling process.
Michael Campbell
They have something to show and they did publish their budget and finances. There actually wasn't much crazyness to it so no one cared. Chris pays himself reasonably surprising most people

>spawn at Port Olisar at 30 FPS
>Most likely bug out opening the door
>Head down to the main terminal and spawn your ship on the UI that sometimes doesn't let you fully view your ships
>Walk to ship that is now outside on some landing pad
>Hope that it wasn't spawned in pieces because buggy as fuck game for 8 years
>Get in ship and pray you don't fall through the floor
>Start up your ship and hope it doesn't explode because bugs
>Fumble through terrible UI to quantum travel to your destination
>Spend the next 20 + minutes waiting in QT because we now have ED travel times
And the video would end here. If the video were to continue
>>Get to your destination
>Realize there's not a whole lot to interact with so you pick up a box you found on the ground
>Your starter ship doesn't even hold boxes yet so you glitch your box into it (or place or done nicely if you paid 2 win a better ship with more cargo)
>Also if you paid 2 win a better ship your travel time is cut down
>Also you get better guns
>Pray that that box didn't glitch you and drop you through the world
>Spend 20 minutes flying back to a place to deliver the box
>Pray again it doesnt glitch you through the floor
>As you are landing struggle with the revamped (for the third or four time) flight model that barely works
>Pray your ship doesn't explode on impact

>NPC doesn't accept box

You know I would have given CR money if he just wanted to make a space sim. But he has no experience with making a massive MMO.

Just imagine the colossal shitstorm that would go down if this scam ever got cancelled. It's like the Jonestown of video games.
I don't think the $276 million they're spending on hookers and blow should count towards the total, that's a little unfair.

I remember playing Wing Commander III when I was a toddler and enjoyed it for the movie-game novelty. I tried a couple Wing Commander IV and a couple other games that Roberts made afterwards and grow bored of them very quickly.
And all of a sudden whales started giving him literally hundred of millions to develop this vaporware scam as if Roberts were the greatest developer that ever existed. WHY?

Black Spanish Hitler commands you: "pound my ass!"
At least, it looks like Hitler. All the facial features are the same, the teutonic block-head, the furrowed brow, the bristling toothbrush moustache. But aside from that, nothing could be more different about this alluring creature. He flicks his long blonde hair back, eyeing you coyly over his shoulder, his glistening ebony back muscles dancing in the Mediterranean sun. You move atop him and grab his firm D-cup breasts.
"The south shall rise again." You whisper as you part his cheeks and slide your love sausage deep into his goop hole.

But user nothing stops you from slaving away at mining for months on end so you can get yourself the current meta pvp ship Whale McWhale and his whalefriends had access to all along for only 500 dollarydoos. It's totally not pay2win you see
Nolan Evans
To be fair any ship bigger than a constellation is kind of shit to pilot in combat, and you need a crew or you're fucked in combat after that size too.
It's not complete pay 2 win when you do need more people, on top of bigger ships just being slower
Gabriel Smith
>it's not completely pay2win if better ships cost more reallife money in an alpha because multicrew ships sold for hundreds of dollars also need multiple crewmen to work
That's just straight up cultist logic. They sold huge carriers behind closed doors for literally thousands of dollars a piece and only invited whales that were already 1000+ dollars deep. Obviously spending money on ships is simply an act of donating to the game development and not an elaborately planned out scheme by CRs marketing wife to squeeze money out of idiots in their search for ingame power
Jeremiah Scott
I enjoy this character
Lucas Bailey
Yes but capital ships are fucking useless for the average task, and they get fucking shit on by bombers, you don't need anything that big to fucking shit on them.
Jordan Cruz
300-400 dollars of investment should be enough, right? Wait let me get my credit card real quick I need to buy some jpgs fast
Oliver Wilson
Or you can just wait and grind it in game when it's actually worth playing
Why do you care so much about a game you don't have interest in playing?
Jayden Cook
Pyramid schemes work by selling product primarily internally to 'employed' distributors rather than to customers. In this context it would probably be selling digital ships to low level employees tasked with either reselling those digital ships or recruiting new low level employees whom they sell their ships to who now have to repeat the process or run out of money. That's not how star citizen's business model works, yet, because they basically don't have a business model beyond begging for voluntary donations.
Scam Citizen is closer to a vaporware racket than to a pyramid. Like, 'we'll sell you this really good ship insurance for our game that you can use once it comes out' while also selling the ships to insure in the first place, without actually planning on finishing any of it.
Christopher Taylor
Henry Wilson
I was interested right up until the point they decided their entire ingame fleet economy was up for sale with real money while the game was still in alpha. Assuming it will release feature complete with v1.0 (lol). Everything that was previously on sale for hundreds of dollars will take months of mind numbing grind to achieve ingame, because anything else and they're pissing off the whales that already paid hard cash for the same thing. They poisoned the well before the village was even built properly
Leo Gonzalez
Nolan Sullivan
Okay so now you go into threads and call everyone a cultist?
Aiden Peterson
If you read correctly you'd see that I called your line of reasoning cultist logic, wether that makes you a cultist depends on how inportant it is for you to further defend CGIs cancerous marketing schemes. "But multicrew ships need a crew!" is not an excuse for having a ship list that can be tiered solely based on the amount of reallife dollars you need to pay for them. Starts at 40, ends at 3000.
Angel Gomez
Seriously? He going to do a sequel?

lots of reasons to shit on the game, but this really really isnt accurate. they reset the economy every 3 months anyways.

At this point, there is no other way around it. It's a fucking scam. It may not have been obviously a scam 6-7 years ago, but now it 100 percent clearly is a scam. It's never coming out. The devs probably spend barely 2-3 hours a week working on developing the game. At this point, I also feel no sympathy for anyone who gives money to them yet feels scammed.

Having to play all day to get your ship back after it gets blown up before you can even get in is pretty shit.
Ayden Martin
Justin Adams
I'm not the original posted the comment you're replying too. I'm not sure I'm understanding your question.
If your ship is blown up, you can get it back at any spaceport or space station, it's free but takes 7 minutes for you to get the ship back. You can expedite the process and pay 800units and get it back in 1 minute.
Now, is 800 units of currency a lot in this game? No! I'm pretty terrible at space combat, so I stick to delivery missions. You pick up a package from one place and deliver it to another planet. These missions pay about 2000 to 7500 credits. You can grab a fuck ton of them and make around 100,000 in an hour if you plan your route right. You can a do a lot with 100,000 credits, ships are more expensive... close to 200,000 or well over 1,000,000.
Chase Sanchez
I read it as 800k, which would take you at the most 22 hours to get with the 6k payout he posted at minimum.
Mason Reyes
I get people here just want to call people cultists and crazies thinking that you must've paid 500000 to just play the game when its 35, but the amount of misinformation in this thread is retarded.

Even better, they know once the game is out they can't hype it up any more or collect sick donationbux. Keeping the game in a perpetual state of "development" makes sure people keep coming back to check out new updates and dump their welfare checks into it in the hopes it will finally be completed, or at least leave the fucking alpha state.
Michael Morales
White people and people who have their shit together that also don’t happen to be white tend to focus only on themselves and their on success. Kind of a waste of time to associate with people that are too strung up on distractions when you could be getting stronger. That’s why people cringe when you see “white unity” movements. I cringe hard when I see people of the ethnicity I happen to be born of being too close minded and distracted by literal nonsense when they could be much better
