Especially for the more obscure stuff, it can be hard to find reliable sources on the web. A lot of my problem was also that, over time, I had favorited so much stuff on Youtube that it would be a huge undertaking to decouple from it and download everything I had favorited. It gets even worse as time goes on, because my playlists turn into a dead video graveyard, and you're lucky to get even a snippet of a video title to know what actually got deleted because Youtube are king niggers.

When I pay for the OST that came with the game or DLC I already paid for, I am by default entitled to access it in the same way I am entitled to access the gameplay itself. What you're describing was an antic of the past, when there weren't as good online distribution services as we have right now and companies sold CDs of soundtracks to the biggest fans of the games or bundled them as a bonus in some premium package, and there's exactly ZERO reason to buy music nowadays in the exact same way that professional musicians themselves all have it uploaded to youtube for free. You may say that the games weren't being sold by Nintendo anyway, but look at what happened to the Switch Online services offering "free" NES games. Nobody saw any value in it because they had been available for download for free for so long, everyone just took it for granted to play them for free.
So in the end of the day, them being availbale for free download damaged their business, as not as many people see value in the subscription as a result as there could have been, had the ROMS were not available for free for decades.
