Yeah honestly, building a well lit, walled settlement only to have these fuckers come calling is fucking annoying. It's not bad if you're playing solo, but it can be a bitch if you have other people on the server, even moreso if the others are out digging or otherwise occupied.

Used to find these guys underground all the time and at some point they just randomly no longer existed and forced me to go looking for swamps. I liked having underground slime farms, it was an extra treasure to find when mining.

My current project is just to beat the stupid ender dragon for the first time
To make it more interesting, every time I die I have one single chance of running back butt-naked to get all my dropped items back, but if they disappear (lava, dying again, etc.) I have to delete the world and start from scratch in a new world
I'm on my 4th attempt

The night to day transition doesn't have to happen to prevent them from spawning, just lay in a bed until the screen stops fading and that'll reset their day counter on servers.
