Gothic 2 Patching guide with graphics mods

Download this and install the patches in the correct order (read the installation order text file). You have to install these for the Steam or the GoG version or else the game won't run properly.

Then download this and extract everything to the "system" folder in your Gothic 2 folder

This makes the graphics a lot better, adds new shaders, increases the draw distance etc + fixes performance issues.

Changes the graphics + changes and expands the map. Edits certain locations and models, adds new buildings, new objects. It offers the best graphics imo but the downside is that it adds too many unnecessary trees in some locations.

Gothic games rose to "fame" mostly because Ultima absolutely fucked up at the time and died an inglorious death, so a bunch of krauts payed in cheap bratwursts and heineken decided to pick up Ultima's mantle when it comes to immersive sim RPGs.
Of course, at the time TES was also at its prime and was already doing the same thing, so there was a rather fierce rivalry between the two fanbases, which persists to this day, mostly on the Gothic side since they're the only ones who even remember these or know PB's portfolio.
On one hand you had Morrowind with its array of RPG dynamics, complex magic, stat sheets, races and whatever, on the other hand you had an underdog like Gothic which focused on a more simplified, consolized experience but a more indepth map design, and more complex NPC routines.

Needless to say, both are shit, but since a few years a bunch of really stubborn slavs are plastering this shit all over the videogame boards because they probably don't know what to do with their lives anymore, so you have a more or less stable "general" thread in here, with the same posts made over and over and over about games that weren't really all that great back in the days and are worse now

Gothic was literally designed for consoles in its early stages, this is common knowledge.
It's also why it's so mechanically barren and looks so awful even for its time.

What other anons said + get Lares And Bartok to pull you through the world, the XP there will give you couple of levels. Alternatively, just purchase a Transform into dragonsnapper scroll and enjoy being literal god. Be careful with the latter tho, as friendly NPCs will still consider you hostile if you are in human form, but passed by them in the Dragonsnapper form

If you put in the effort to aclimate it's the best rpg ever made.

It also helped that gothic was a technical miracle at the point

to add to that dexterity affects bow dmg and lets you use better bows and the bow skill makes you hit targets from a longer distance

The map still had tons of good places to explore, but yeah it was too big for its own good and the different biotopes all felt disconnected. Tbh Risen 3 had the best locations out of all post-gothic games. R3 is underrated in general, after the mess that was R2.

I played NotR first and I didn't think it was grindy or hard. The game is super easy, if you are struggling that you are at the wrong place in the wrong time

It's rough around the edges but is a really solid rpg. I wish they gave you fast travel earlier in the game though because I found myself constantly walking back somewhere to sleep early on but later in the game you actually have the tools to deal with the enemies so you don't get buttfucked if you make a tiny mistake.

The difference between Gothic and other RPGs:

In other RPGs you would get a box popping up on the screen giving you advice on how to defeat an enemy and what to do

In Gothic you don't get shit, you give someone a beer and in exchange they give you a tip on the behavior of a particular creature and you have to figure out the best approach based on that. That's only if you even talk to that person

use dexterity melee weapons.
Your strength is a flat crit damage modifier, applied AFTER armor.

The map wasfine, it just could've benefitted from way more side missions. You can clear the quests way too fast.

Who cares? You're made of glass until you get good armor anyway and HP is mostly irrelevant late game.
It's totally worth it for the early XP. Those orcs also respawn later, so it's a waste of XP to not kill them in Ch1 and this helps with that greatly.

Enemies don't respawn in Gothic. Each chapter just adds certain amount of completely new monsters in predefined spots, no matter whether you kill ones previously present there or not.

Magic is op as fuck in Garbage 3, you can kill dragons with it at level 1. Never level up Arcane Knowledge, you can get ~300 points for free.

mage is by far the most OP thing in 3
takes a little while to get going but you just breeze through everything once you get the right spells
also dont use magic in arena fights, you cant kill your opponent only knock them down and thats not possible with magic

it's because you suck at combat, you have to find out how to avoid each enemy's attacks and the proper way of fighting them

And rank up your 1h/2h/bow or whatever you're doing to a new rank for making combat easier

Not really, unless you want to spend 90% of your time looking for the nearest bed. Although you don't really need much more than the magic wand that lets you pull 20 mana out of your ass, which is just enough to summon the universal midgame problem solver known as goblin skeleton.
Also since unlike in G1 you need to spend LPs or runes on top of mana and circles, you really need to minimize your spellbook and preferably know where you can find free runes.
