Yes

Absolutely. They enhance the experience. Yes, they can be abused and over-used, but that doesn't mean we should get rid of ALL of them. Moderation is the key here.

Of course not, vidyagaems are for slow burn chill only

Attached: stop saltitating spookers.gif (406x456, 94K)

Its been so overused though that moderation has been thrown out the window

Attached: asss.jpg (960x960, 151K)

Attached: 1437057833457.gif (700x700, 2.81M)

I'm sure someone drew porn of this but I can't find it anymore.

That makes no sense. Just make a horror game that uses them appropriately and doesn't abuse them. Moderation is still a possibility.

after all these years, I still don't get this image. where is it from, Aoi Oni??

I recognize only the two on top.

If they're done well, yes. That applies to everything though.

What's the origin of this pictur? I've searched and searched, asked and asked, but never got more than "it comes from a japanese magazine" or "it's an edited picture of a syrian kid found under rubble"

Yes, as part of the gameplay, not as a cutscene. That's when they are at their best, when they disrupt the player while there is actual danger nearby. Or at the very least, they are neutral as a failstate, not bad but they won't carry the game. But a jumpscare with no consequence is bad.

What's the bottom right one from?

A jump scare is just a cheap scare user why do you want to be startled so bad, haunted houses do it all the time too because they cant think of anything thats actually scary

people who hate jumpscares are the ones who want "atmospheric, psychological" horror without really knowing what it means. they want a game where literally nothing happens except from spooky music and grim environment from beginning to end

No sound no scare, try again faggot.

As a condiment for the experiece, yes. But I rather have the game fuck with my machine like eternal darkness did, too many cheap jump scares ruin the mood

hey that actually looks cool

delete this

>Um jumpscares are cheap. I prefer psychological horror

Attached: 1537350580153.png (323x570, 214K)

Nothing wrong with being cheap as long as it works. I don't want a game that relies entirely on jumpscares, but I do want a game with a good atmosphere, story, gameplay and jumpscares. Tension and tension release are two important aspects to horror games and the later is achieved the best with jumpscares. Obviously, the better and more clever the jumpscare is, the better.

It can put you on edge which makes you feel scared

Attached: 1433076082285.gif (267x199, 538K)

Animation too fast and too small, not scary

haha

Attached: SEEYOUSOON.gif (498x296, 1.45M)

Hating on all jumpscares is retarded. The only jumpscares that can go fuck themselves are the scripted ones that you have no option to avoid. Games like FNAF etc. where you get jumpscared only when you fuck up and die is fine imo

I've searched for "right behind you", no similar results to the OP pic. Is it a game??

I think they can be done both wrong and right
RE2 had a jumpscare that was well done, it has Mr X come through a wall when you run back down a corridor that you have already been down, similar to the dogs in the window in the first game
They remade it in the remake and it was still good, an example of it done right
Jumpscares done wrong are shit like taking a key item off a dead body or in a suspicious location and its obvious as fuck its about to happen, its boring, overdone and just feels tacky. The amount of games that have the body you are taking from suddenly grab you is astounding, it would work better if they built it up and nothing happened.
People who like random jumpscares are the same autists that think loud=funny just because their peanut brains cant understand how to process the situation, the same types of people to start nervously laughing when something awkward happens in real life

Attached: yellowjeremyclarkson.png (638x425, 459K)

when games overuse them they tend to get a lot less scary.
look at resident evil 3, literally a jumpscare every 2 areas so you are already expecting the next one after the first 6

99% of the best horror movies and games have jumpscares in them

what is this image originally from? Is there pasta attached to it or is it a one off?

Attached: 1546946457658.png (240x240, 49K)

Causing stress through loud noises and instant scares is completely fine.

All horror should at least have 1 jump scare. You need to have risk, to make the audience have a reason to feel tense but without the release of that through terror i.e a jumpscare eventually it just fizzles out

based and redpilled

Every horror game gets 2.
If you need more your setting is weak.

Attached: 1477108880103.png (270x243, 91K)

The horror genre has no place left in the current century.

When it started in movies, people would get scared by blood and puppet squeletons talking, then came those "lost tapes" movies and did a revamp on the whole scene, but soon, people didn't care anymore.

Horror in videogames was a new and exciting thing, you were controling the character and taking decisions from him, it was you! The first games were done in pretty good taste, chases and things of the sort became pretty livid to play, but it did it's time and the thrill wore off.

I live in Brazil, when I'm on my way to home, sometimes at the dark of the night, a "psycopath with torturing gadgets", on a fucking computer screen, doesn't seem so scary anymore.

Now you can resort to jump scares... no one really likes those, it was a cinema schtick to get girls to hug you, it's cheap; in video games, it's even worse, it may get the job done to people with no taste, but compared to Amnesia, that forced you to explore a terrifying place with danger at every corner, back when our brains where plump juicy peaches with all the receptors a young fella could have, it's still like comparing nutting inside a tight young pussy to beating your half-flacid meat to midget porn.

Attached: pornwatchers.jpg (1050x1374, 381K)

>I became jaded, so that means the genre sucks now
Fuck off, delicia

>jumpscares are the only threatening thing in horror games
You are aware that "horror" can be more than walking simulators, right?

Looks stupid, is this from anything in particular?

Attached: 1546996153281.gif (562x478, 867K)

Guess I'm going down the AVGN rabbit hole again.

Yes. You can only build so much with atmosphere you need to have moments of shock in order to actually cash in with the ambience you’ve created.

It's from a comic. The neat thing is that the comic starts scrolling by itself with sound out of nowhere.

Quiet jump scares are underutilized.

Because its not the jump scare that's scary, it's playing a horror game where you know a jump scare can happen.

Part of problem though is people can't make up their mind what a jump scare actually is. Is it just the tacky "suddenly in your face with loud noise" or is it any attempt for the game to make you jump whatsoever?

FNaF 1 and 2 unironically do them the best. Jumpscares should be your punishment for fucking up otherwise it feels cheap 99% of the time.

Attached: Modern Horror Games.gif (352x196, 2.24M)

You may actually have a case, games don't play enough with imagery so unsettling that we can't help but look away, instead of deformed faces with shreiking sounds that play on our flight or fight instinct, and I'm not talking about gore either

It's more like the face of this bloke here, that used to date some famous chick of some like that, look at this thing

Attached: file.png (225x225, 113K)

He's real tall

Yes, but they should be a punishment, not an unavoidable scripted event.

They don't belong anywhere. There is nothing scary about being startled for two seconds before moving on to the next thing.

go back to Yea Forums

they need to be included because whats frightening is the idea that something COULD happen when you pass this window or open this door, if they specifically said NO JUMPSCARES IN VIDYA this sort of suspense couldnt be created

w...why is this stuck on the same frame forever?

Oh, I thought it was from that abandoned house with full of rare classic video games where the user from /x/ got followed by a malevolent spirit after his exploration.

god bless my incredibly shitty wifi, was able to read the whole comic, get distracted by something, and see one frame of whatever you were trying to pull on me.

did he died

Prey did jumpscares right. Near as I can tell there was really only one scripted scare actual spoiler don't open in the calibration room.
But the mimics do a good job naturally providing both tension and (if you're unaware) pretty decent surprises. Also the other Typhon move in such weird ways that sometimes you just get spooked out of nowhere by it turning a corner at the right time.
God I love Prey.

Attached: 1548287357078.gif (500x750, 753K)

Jumpscares are to horror games what food fights are to culinary

Jumpscares don't put you on edge because it lasts 1 second and goes away

Based
SLOW BURNS GOOD JUMPSCARE BAD!!!

Attached: kek1.png (660x752, 496K)

absolutely, but you cant just throw them in any situation.
How to make a good jumpscare:
>Buildup
Make the player feel fear with noises and visual clues that something dangerous is about to happen. If it happens randomly in relatively calm situation, most players will either release controls or pause.
>Followup
A good jumpscare leads to a chase or fight, or anything that requires the player to act after the jumpscare. If player input has no effect during/after jumpscare, then the jumpscare will just turn out annoying and reduce immersion
>USE SPARINGLY

scripted jumpscares that have no effect on gameplay are cheap and to be avoided

conditional jumpscares that effect gameplay can be done well

I played Prey but what happened in the calibration room?

>I don't like it, so I give the attentionwhore attention to make him go away!
Come on lad.

In this situation a jumpscare will make the player go "fuck you" while just having a dangerous enemy approach would actually instill panic.

I kno. I promise to do better next time.

Attached: 1539580478583.jpg (1080x1145, 150K)

The thing about prey is all the spooks feel organic. Like I broke some looking Glass and a typhon was behind it. It wasn't scripted it was just clever enemy placement.

Attached: 1564533344044.gif (324x333, 856K)

Jumpscares serve as an instant release of tension. If tension is released too often in this way, it becomes ineffective and simply surprises people, which is not good.
Nonetheless, if there is no tension, no atmosphere to generate it, such as walking down a brightly lit hallway with nothing out of the ordinary, then sudden 180, monster chasing you, random orchestra appearing, and lights all going out, that's not scary, just surprising.

PANIC

While it may be lessened by how the game generally plays out, Dead by Daylight when you're facing Michael Myers or Ghostface and it's that first minute where you aren't sure who it is, then you just see them staring at you through a window or around a corner are genuinely spooky as shit and make you book it like a mad lad.

lol so true,
why don't we tell them some real horror games, right bro?

I bet Death Stranding will have a jumpscare or two. Kojima does not disrespect the jumpscare. See: P.T.

looks like a mad wojak, lmao

did he die?

But most of those games do have jumpscares. Even a lot of the literal non horror games on there have jumpscares.
What the fucks the point of this pic?

>Replying to your own B8 that much

What is it that makes Yea Forums hate horror games.
Anons we get the point horror games need jumpscares, literally anyone who isn't an idiot understands that, but it needs tension, I personally hope that horror games stop blowing their load in the trailers and actually hide shit.

Attached: Chad_using_his_computer.png (723x666, 163K)

When done right, they're fine. When they're just ear shattering screamers that constantly pop up, no thanks. S'why I haven't touched the five nights games. I already have tinnitus, I don't need that shit. Give me spooky shit happening in a hallway as the lights flicker. Give me shit that gets closer to me when I look away. Give me floors that break underneath me and drop me in a room full of creepy enemies that the moment one touches me I respawn back where the floor broke. Give me objects flying at me for no reason. Fuck off with the loud noises.

>Why yes, I do prefer atmospheric and tense horror over cheap jump scares. What possibly gave it away?

It's just a forced edit of a Yea Forums bait pic about horror movies.

Still love that. One of my favourite AVGN scenes really.

>Five Nights at Freddie's
It's the only one that did something okay with jumpscares, though.

Some of the screams in the FNAF games are really annoying in regards to shrillness, most notably 1 and SL, but I do enjoy the tension of the gameplay. I have bad pulse so the part in SL where you have to input a long code on a small keypad with a very short timeframe is always nerve-wracking for me even though I already know everything surrounding it. I think a game being able to still trip you up even when you know it mechanically is a good thing.
I guess what does it for me is the buildup and release. From the moment the main gameplay starts it's like you start holding your breath, then you either die or you win, but either way you exhale and can finally relax.

Attached: Ennard.gif (300x169, 702K)

>ear shattering screamers
So that's what I did right. I played that with no sound and had a pretty fine experience.

Its not even good in movies
Its the lowest common denominators shitty gimmick only normies love

>liked and Upvoted

FNAF is the perfect example of jump scares done right, since the scares are a result of you playing the game poorly.

Hey where's the one with the black & white basement/store video?

I got alzheimer but can some user figure out these 2 jumpscares i very vaguely remember
first one was from some furry game where if would type yiff the screen would look and something would appear
second was a game i think from albinoblacksheep where you had to find some letters/differences or something i think

Attached: 1535489191990.jpg (540x562, 72K)

There's a lot of idiots in this board that genuinely think jumpscares shouldn't exist at all.

Objects flying around are jumpscares, though.

Contrarian brainlet pussy faggot

Fucking user you're suppose to scare me, not make me lafffff.

Y'all assholes don't understand the usages of a good jump scare. I know this because I work with training dogs, horses, and cattle and one good scare can really fuck them up. USUALLY temporarily though. It's horrible if its permanent (going around corners, irrationaly/dangerously spook around that thing that scared them etc.)

Attached: ponyfucker2.jpg (2217x1469, 729K)

I didn't say they weren't, just that they're better than having something appear in front of you and peak your headphones. Hell I never even mentioned the strobe light shit most of em do after sayin to play in the dark. Forgot about that bit, fuck.

>bought 76
I seriously hope you mean 76 copies of Skyrim.

there is no salvation but Hydration

Attached: awatri.png (1076x1105, 3.42M)

game over jumpscares are retarded youtuber bait and don't contribute anything to the game

Remember to stay hydrated.

How can someone look so muscular, yet so malnourished at the same time?

To get this physique, you are starving your body, so you aren't entirely wrong there

Fuck it I'm going to make.my own video game idea, it'll take inspiration from the taking, making it seem like it starts with a alien/with light amount of zombies, apocalypse and slowly show you that its actually an alternative dimension taking over ours. the player will mainly use a 9mm handgun for fighting, either first or third person, and eventually be able to use magic, but it will start out more like being a telakintic, for anything other then moving objects with your powers you will need to do a small minigame that if you fail will take half your health temporarily. idk what the minigame will be yet, but with it you'll be able to restore your max health, or heal yourself lightly, damage enemies, it can be used to banish enemy's later on, but not bosses, and can be used to make them run away, or to turn them, the stronger spells take a harder minigame.
Your spells aren't going to be to strong.

Ocasional jumpscares are essential to good horror games, without them, getting distressed over mere atmosphere is pointless. You get creeped out by atmosphere because of the probability of a jumpscare, both are needed. If you get rid of jumpscares entirely all you get are levels over levels of atmosphere, after three levels without any jumpscare you'd start to feel too safe and confident and the game would eventually get pretty boring.
Reminder that every horror game praised by Yea Forums has a few jumpscares.

Attached: 1542323799545.png (517x396, 273K)

This will more of the aesthetic of the enemy's later on.
