Perfect design choice for the genre. The last thing you want in an immersive game is for the generic menus to rip you right out of the experience.
Can't actually think of any other games that do it as well as DS did, though. Closest I can think of is fallout using the pip boy as the inventory manager, but it's full of other text boxes and pop ups that rip you out.

I've been noticing that recent Nintendo games in general are going for this minimal flat bullshit UI. For me, BotW was the most jarring since the inventory side of the menu is so plain and clinical compared to what was seen in OoT>onward, but the kicker is that the map/photo/rune menus DO have UI design more like what you'd expect with the Sheikah tech stone aesthetic.

Similarly, Super Mario Odyssey's UI is so flat and uses generic fonts for everything, with the travel brochure map screen being the only creative and interesting menu, with the generic fonts actually working in favor of that context.

this is great because everything is color coded. it's good for people who have poor vision because they just have to remember what each color does. the buttons are big rectangles, easy to tap; it just works. there is a nice shadow gradient to halve the rectangle so it looks more like a button, like a finished object you can interact with rather than a nebulous flat plane

i thought the vista gloss took it too far, and i prefer rectangles to ovals personally but i'd still take XY's UI over this new one
