Terranigma is garbage.
The translation sucks, ans in terms of gameplay, the game can't decide what it wants to be, and at some points ends up with either tedious back to back dungeons or a bunch of glorified fetch quests.
Sure, the villages growing from your actions is neat as a idea, but it falls flat since most of the changes are mostly cosmetic, and in some points, dialog doesn't even change for NPCs, making it almost pointless besides the main story.

I can play classic dragon quest all day without issue, but I just can't stay invested in final fantasy. I don't get it at all, they both play pretty much the same

Fuck you. Terranigma is great.
here's so many scenes I can talk about in terranigma that hit me a lot, so many of them, and some of them are literally just small dialogue bits with random, unimportant NPCs. The main areas and plot points are no joke either, there's major twists that make you yourself, and amazing levels that are very memorable. Put that together with some beautiful spritework and music (I don't think there's a single bad song in the game), and you've got a game that's sure going to generate a big impression. It did for me and a bunch of friends that I recommended the game to. It's 15 hours long.
Put that along the fact that I have heavy nostalgia on the game, along with its incredibly tragic development aftermath, and you've got something that has lead me to actual depression due to X or Y
