Why was this game so hated again? It has the best story, mechanics and overall gameplay of the series. It's only inferior in atmosphere to SH3 but superior in everything else (especially the story).

By who? 95% of people dislike it more than the previous games, which is to be expected as The Room was never even intended to be a Silent Hill game to begin with, but they don't hate it.

It was interesting but I can't see myself replaying it. Replaying the same levels all over again halfway through the game with an escort was pretty lame. Also, having burping nurses, monsters that screech like monkeys and dogs that sound like cheetahs was dumb as fuck.

It came off of the backs of Silent Hill 2 and 3. If it had done it's own thing with the storyline instead of trying desperately to tap into the idiots who think SH2 is GOAT then it could have been manageable. The gimmick with the first person perspective of the apartment itself was good but the inventory system was freaking awful. Atmospherically I think it's definitely up there in terms of strangeness/weirdness with a bit of creepy thrown in as the music helps a ton too.. but the combat and inventory fuck it all up. It doesn't help that it makes you go through the same fucking stages all over again but with the added bonus of having a literally retarded/handicapped AI following you around that you have to escort to and fro WHILE also being chased by a cliche unstoppable force. All in all 3/5, not terrible but not great. Just OK.

Only c.u.CKS hated it. they should have worked more on the protagonist but other than that the ost, the atmosphere, the apartment mechanics, the story and its ties to the rest of the story, the invincible enemies, the zones themselves and the background of the important characters were top notch. the trailer by itself sold this game, let alone the game itself. it is a masterpiece, my fav sh and the only thing that should have been added would have been a romance ending as shit with eileen. the concept was based the apartment and even though it changed unfortunately, a team that was not sh made one of the best sh games out there. this is how you do survival horror.
