I really pity the ones who've been too spoiled on DR1. I went into it almost blind, only knowing that Junko was very big due her being basically the mascot girl due porn and fanart and something related to maybe being somewhat bad. So when "she" got killed off early my entire expectation was thrown out the window and i had an intensly enjoyable VN game out from it.
And that's the pc port. It's a miracle i wasn't spoiled earlier.
Also their game Shibuya Scramble is top notch as well, and i recommend it to anyone who wants a more down to earth but still a bit crazy VN type game. Except in SS, you get more "bad" ends than you can shake a stick at, but more as a collectathon that don't set you back rather than wasting 90+ hours like Key VN's does.

3 is controversial, but i liked it and found it a fitting end, with it's twists and suprises. Don't really understand why it's theme and topic seems so hard for many to digess. DR1's cast is mostly okay but rarely "good." More grounded/"realistic" but not as interesting. The killers are all pretty good, Sayaka is great, Mondo is good but the unique tragedy between him and Chihiro elevate both of them way beyond what they were as individuals, even Celeste is good recognizing that she was just a regular girl who thought she was way smarter than she was and got caught up in her delusions of grandeur. Sakura is pretty boring but likable and does wonders for Aoi. The main trio are pretty uninteresting. Taka is good but they don't do anything with him.
DR2's cast ranges from excellent to awful but generally trended toward better. If they didn't waste half the survivors on vapid bad comic relief the game could have been a masterpiece.
Ultra Despair Girls's cast is outstanding, easily the best character writing in the series.
V3 is like DR2 but even more hit or miss and less generally likable.

TL;DR Kodaka is the Ultimate Hack Writer, Danganronpa characters are generally good enough, except when they're not and except when they're amazing.

The excellent one was Nagito. The good one were Fuyuhiko. The okay ones were Hajime, Chiaki, Gundham and the imposter. The rest were mediocre or superfluous to me. The ones in the 'okay' gap, I feel had strong potential but something in their writing botched it up. Like Hajime's obsession with talent along with the process of getting to that state, is absent so he feels really shallow. Chiaki was boring, but was given a very intelligent reason for being so, so she ends up there. Gundham felt like his character was scrapped together at chapter 4, while given no attention beyond "chuuni" before it. DR2's cast just feel very disjointed in execution and it certainly did not help that a bulk of what makes them interesting is in their FTEs instead of the main story. Mikan is a completely different person once you play her FTEs, for example and it's criminal that wasn't in the story, where she's just plain fanservice.
