Is it worth playing before Automata? Yes? Is it better? Absolutely not. Every problem with Automata's gameplay is a result of copying Gestalt/Replicant too faithfully. So realize when you're shitting on Automata you're shitting on the original 100x as hard.

I get the impression of a dev team working under heavy constraints but against all odds producing a compelling product through creative solutions to those limitations. Automata may smooth out the kinks, but the charm is lacking, and I’ll almost always take an endearingly flawed experience over a more polished, but less distinct one.

There's nothing "hard" about porting RDR1.
R* is just bunch of lazy hacks.

That being said, PS3 emulation is very mature already, and can run both NieR and Dod3 way better than the real-deal PS3.

automata was decent but it didn't punch me in the gut like the first NieR did.
I will say though that despite a lot of the english voices being shit in automata 9s english VA really knocked it out of the park. he did a fantastic job.

I always loved Nier 1, and it's been one of m favourite games for ages. Shit, now i wanna replay it again.

In Automota, the game really, really wanted me to feel sorry for the robots. But it was much more horrifying to find out in Nier that you'd been killing actual humans just trying to get their bodies back. It made it so much more emotional to think about. Plus the story had actual loss and a sense of fighting overwhelming foes - in Automota you fight immense enemies from the get-go, whilst in replicant you need to train for years to beat the tentacle-monster thing. I dunno, personal opinion and all, but i prefer nier.

In Drakengard 3 there was a loading screen loredump that said their world had no magic until a calamity in the 800s. And since the world map in DoD3 is upside down Europe it's to be assumed that midgard was very similar to ours until a calamity occurred which introduced magic. But since Niers timeline was also just like ours until a tremendous calamity fucked shit up, so what gives? And what was responsible for the calamity that introduced magic to midgard?

I really wish the PS4 had backwards compatibility though, but at least I still have my PS3. Drakengard though... that's going to be a tough one. Unless the PS3 has all three of them for purchase.

original fat ps3 is backwards compatible with PS2 games. Otherwise Drakengard 1 works fine with emulation.

I really wish I could love Automata more since its basically a dream project come true made by a dream team, but along the way it feels like it just lost what makes each of the parts involved actually special and unlike other Taro games never rises to greatness and becomes more than the sum of its parts, it just ends up an acceptable if somewhat tonally muted experience with a cute message and serviceable gameplay

Drakengard 1 is pure suffering kino. Recommended. Yes, skip 2. It's not even a Yoko Taro game. Read up on 3. The lore expansion is great, too bad none of it made it into the actual game and it looks and plays like super repetitive ass. Nier is so fucking good from a narritive, character, music and atmosphere perspective. Gameplay can be repetitive and it isn't the prettiest to look at. This and the original Drakengard are the real meat and potatoes of this universe. Didn't play Automata so I can't give a real opinion beyond, "looks interesting, I guess."

No. A lot of the stuff is translated or given synopsis. Same for the original Nier novellas, too. Although Drakengard 3 goes into the EXTREME of having none of the backstory actually be touched on, in game. It really holds it back for me.

It's not very good and questionably canon. Some people write its canonicity off because Yoko Taro was barely involved, but it also just doesn't add much of anything to the plot or lore, and arguably detracts from aspects of the first game. Regardless, Yoko Taro is not the sole writer for the so-called "Yoko Taro games", and Drakengard 2 did feature writing talent from people who have been involved in his other projects.

There's a few instances of great moments but manah turns into a boring slag of meat.
The main character literally asks every single question in the god damn book MULTIPLE FUCKING TIMES. Story is kinda dumb too.
