Playing Bloodstained right now is reminding me how much I love metroidvanias. I've never actually played much of Super Metroid though. Thinking about playing it after Bloodstained.

Well Nintendo isn't a big selling console and out of all their series, Metroid is one of the worst selling franchises for them. A Metroid Prime tier game on something selling as well as the Switch may just be what the series needs to finally break out into the limelight.

It's the same reason as for F-Zero, Miyamoto is a powerhouse in the company when it comes to approving projects and he has gone on record saying that he doesn't want to ever do the same thing twice. Miyamoto will use any franchise he likes so long as it will be "different" (see Star Fox 0), but doing "the same game but better" seems to annoy him, causing him to reject pitches for stuff like more F-Zero. You'll notice that projects have tapered off after the Prime games when interest was at its peak because Other M fucking flopped so hard that there was a 6 year gap before they attempted any revival at all, and even then only for a shitty spinoff mobile game.
Metroid is a game where you could easily copy the Bandai approach to Gundam and make a bunch of "Universal Century" games to maintain your base by retreading the Super Metroid formula while also branching out with AUs to satisfy Miyamoto HOWEVER Metroid is not a major franchise because it appeals to a smaller demographic by default.

Space/sci-fi is less popular than fantasy. Even the best Metroid games are selling worse than the worst Zeldas.

TLDR Other M killed interest in the franchise, Miyamoto doesn't like retreading games, and sci-fi isn't a popular genre.

Just what I said. Super is the first time Samus "speaks", and we know she was joyed that metroids can be used for the good of civilization. After that, she left for a new bounty. She's all business, but enjoys the redemption metroids will get after having exterminated them.

Prime 1 is less, but the moment where she removes her helmet and reflects on the destruction of the Artifact Temple, mourning it silently, was great. Shows she holds great reverence for the people who helped raise her.

I really, really like the OST of SR despite not liking the game as a whole. It honestly makes it the comfiest Metroid game for me, ever. I can't stress enough how much I think SR is a mediocre-to-decent product, but it's so, so easy to pick up and play compared to other Metroid titles.
