Not that one

Tauren starting area count? It was pretty based

Halo 1 has a great first level, the linear succession of hallways with progressively tougher enemies and skirmish layouts introduces you to the combat before setting you in much more open environments in the next few levels. It's a good hidden tutorial.

I knew people only clung to this game because of muh cinematic feels.

Prey (the 2006 one) had a pretty sweet opening.

Anyone who has played 11 games in their lifetime should be able to come up a list that doesn't include TLoU off the top of their head.

But dude you know shes not in the game later so you already know she dies and you gotta play the whole prologue knowing shes gonna die! Thats so deep and heavy and E M O T I O N A L

that's about the only thing it had going for it

Starts you off fighting only a few enemies in isolated encounters before throwing you in the deep end when you reach the village and it's always thrilling every time as long as you don't camp in that one house like a little bitch.

Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance

You know, im glad people are getting smart enough to see that bullshit in gaming. What now they call classics for gimmick shit will soon get fucking dethroned.
FF7 was considered among THE BEST games ever, every year i see it going lower and lower only surviving on nostalgia goggles

Goosebumps.

This, I don't even hate TLOU and even somewhat enjoyed it (though it's obscenely overrated), but the prologue just felt pointless. I didn't give a fuck about his real daughter at all. It was the worst part of the game, if anything

Medal of Honor: Rising Sun

These, literally played (Not finished) every popular single player game at this point & grew up in the 2000s. So there's no nostalgia bias

Mario 1-1.
Foundry (THPS3).
Green Hill Zone.
Half Life's opening.
E1M1.

If arcade boards count, Donkey Kong and Smash TV.

your moms opening was pretty nice if you catch my drift

> 15. Virtuous Mission - Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater
I always thought mgs2 had the strongest opening level in the entire series

Any game that starts you off high level in some crazy situation is automatically added. Chrono Cross and Lufia 1 come to mind

the game may have been a diversity circlejeck but damn did battlefield 1 open strong

how do you KNOW shes not in the game later? shit argument

What's that one house user?

RE4
Doom's E1M1
Hollywood Holocaust
Bomb-Omb Battlefield
The Tanker
Virtous mission
Phrigate Orpheon
The clocktower in Bayonetta
Dante's shop in DMC3
That opening level in Dragon's Dogma
Statue of liberty in Deus Ex
Amusement Park in SH3
The Chain
Angel Island Zone
That manor in Thief Gold

So what does it say are the top 10?

why yes, the opening where you get milk out of the fridge as a little girl and then a movie plays was truly breathtaking video game design.

If you are counting arcades.

TMNT 1989 and Turtles In Time
Bucky O'Hare
Die Hard Arcade
House of the Dead 1 and 2
Area 51
Cadillacs and Dinosaurs
Magic Sword
Final Fight
X-Men Arcade
Simpsons Arcade
Time Crisis 2 and 3

>angry early 20 something stuck out in the middle of nowhere with no future or prospects
I related to him so much

The one to the right upon entering the village. Only has two rooms and the door to the second room has a padlock on it.

helicopter ride + entrance plaza in first dead rising is kino.

>Guy loses his daughter to a heartless military order
>Proceeds to murder and rob countless families in order to survive after
This literally makes no sense.

Skyrim

They totally ripped off the ending of Thirteen Ghosts

Unironically Fallout 4, the rest wasn't that great but until the part when i'm going into the vault, it was great.

That list is almost certainly total shit, probably doesn't even have RULES OF NATURE on it.

TLOU's first level was dope as fuck. It was the first time I had seen my home town in vidya. What little there was of Boston was done much fucking better than FO4.

TLOU first proper level mind you.

Ninja Gaiden ninja fortress
Call of Duty 2 Demolition (not sure if this counts)
MGS2 tanker

DMC3

I remember playing this shit at age 12 and being scared to sleep all night in case I woke up to my door chained like this.... sh4 was good shit man

Most sonic games do have the best opening levels.
Green hill zone
Emerald coast

Bomb omb battlefield
Mario bros 3 1-1
Gta san andreas
Megaman X

came to post this

Final fantasy VII is the best game ever made and the best game it is possible to make. It also has the best opening.

Unironically BotW before the rest of the game goes to shit.

God of War 2 with the Colossus
God of War 3 with the Gaia climb and Poseidon fight
Now THOSE were levels!

pretty much any game in the 90s back when games were judged by demos
feels like all the budget was put into the first areas that a reviewer would play or that a kid would get to play when renting the game, then quality falls off in later levels / the non-shareware episodes / et.

>Green Hill zone
Ehh. I would have gone with City Escape. It was pure adrenaline, that level. Green Hill just doesn't give the same thrill. It's just too green.

>music changes with more instruments as you progress through the level

love it when games to this. and theres not too many that do

tlou has a really strong opening, even if its still called cinematic shit around here, its not a bad "intro" at all
I dont mind if a game has an opening that holds your hand more or something like that, any great games do, it has ita purpose

for example, for me the greatest opening in vydia history is sti Silent Hill 1, nothing has topped it so far, the camera angles, soundtrack, the way you get deeper into the aggressive horror of the games world is perfect, its pretty "cinematic" but its great

based on gameplay only it's hard to tell. smb 1-1 is definitely a no.1 candidate. personal top 3 are ff7 bombing mission, sotc first colossus and mgs2 tanker part. re4 village is also fucking great.

i'm sorry

That opening of Arkham City where you beat the fuck out of Penguin as Bruce Wayne.

Botw. First couple of hours are almost perfect, it's not until later you start to see flaws and annoying shit.

Central Yharnam is the best first level I've ever played. No tutorials, teaches you everything through pure gameplay, incredible atmosphere, 2 great boss fights, sets about 50 plot threads in motion.

That unskipable one.

This, even the Hydra in 1
I would add

super mario world
spiderman ps4
contra nes
guardian heroes
heavy rain
castlevania

Sierra 117
