Largest Game Ever

>Bungie has perhaps gone a little bit too wild though - Destiny 2 and its upcoming Shadowkeep expansion will be moving to Steam from Battle.net for the first time, and the huge update will pump Destiny 2’s installation size up to a gargantuan 165GB. To the best of our knowledge, this would make Destiny 2 the largest video game of all time.

Video game installs were a mistake
>Doesn't affect load times
>the average videogame takes up too space
>have to buy more space to play games you already payed for

Last gen the average game was 8GB, what happened?

harddrive share

The remarkable thing about Destiny 2 is that, even with an SSD, the load screens can be upwards of 30 seconds for every little fucking thing you do

I can't begin to imagine how incompetent the devs must be to have such inefficient load times

I hate this jewishness, can't devs fucking optimize their shit or package it better? Games are like 100GB+ easily nowdays.

Fucking how? There's absolutely no way they're adding that much content to the game that warrants that.

They probably are adding that much stuff. Only like half of it will make it in the game though.

Size =/= Content
There are so many ways of adding size without improving quality.

Last Expansion was over 40GB user. Adding new worlds takes up space

half is still 100gb this is not fair!

>Right now, Destiny 2 stands at roughly 90 GB on advanced systems like the Xbox One X. However, Destiny 2: Shadowkeep needs 165 GB. It's unclear why this is the case, but we should find out when the expansion launches in October. It was supposed to launch in September but was pushed back a month.

Uncompressed bloated files

>Fucking how? There's absolutely no way they're adding that much content to the game that warrants that.

Have you been paying attention you plebs?

.They're reworking the entire progression system
. They're adding new planets
.They're adding new modes
.They're bringing back old contend from D1
.They're merging all players to the New Light Edition with new effects for PC and Console owners
.Adding tons more weapons
.Adding all the old raids
.a complete UI overhaul

It warrants the huge size increase

Attached: 960x0.jpg (960x557, 65K)

>165 GB
That's a lot of fucking sparrow skins.

The reasoning is that if your hdd is full of one game, you're less likely to play other games

compression is an art form

I sure love bloat.

>They're reworking the entire progression system
>Adding all the old raids
I'm listening.
I never played the first game and my friend praises D1 like it was a gift from god.
His disappointment in D2 was one of the many reasons I quit.

>Adding tons more weapons
I still say they need to add a bigger emphasis on abilities. Outside of like a dozen are so, more weapons in a group are really similar with different skins and numbers.

Someone redpill me on nuBungie

>165 gigs is alot
Are these people poor? A 1TB hardrive is like 50 bucks

Well there goes any chance of me giving this a try

Well you guys wanted 4K, 4K HD graphic, 60fps. This is it. Buy more SSD

>playing games on a hard drive
lmao

They aren't adding all the old raids, and as far as I can tell the only content from D1 is re-used assets and the "new" patrol zone. I really like the game and play it every day with my friends but let's not lie about what Shadowkeep is really adding: An updated Moon patrol zone, some of the D1 Crucible maps that should've been in the game from the start, some new weapons half of which are gonna be D1 models, and a new raid with hopefully all new models.

>be shit dev
>never heard of compression
>literally no visible difference unless you take magnifying glasses if done right while saving upwards of 65% the harddrive space

We're at the point where people are getting fed up with load times so are shoving everything on SSDs to get whatever gains they can get. Only TB SSDs aren't that cheap yet. At least, not without a big sale.

what the fuck thats even bigger than RDR2

This, I remember back in the day Payday 2 was reaching 100+ GB in size and then later on they released a file optimization patch which reduced it to like 30 or so

>4th expansion to the game
>7 if you count the season pass
this is like being mad that wow gets bigger, whats the problem?

They're adding all the raids back and new "Nightmare" raids, which are probably remade versions of the raid.

Fucking this
The whole game is voice acted in like 8 languages. You have 8 games worth of audio you have to download uncompressed by lazy cheap devs and you’ll never even access the fucking files. Boarderline harddrive space theft. At least as bad a squatting on someone’s property

85% of the size of all these bloated AAA games is fucking uncompressed video and audio files in 25 different languages or MEGATEXTURES

For some, they will have to DL that all at once at the game shifts platforms on PC.

Does anyone even play the game anymore? Do you?

Attached: Destiny 2_20190716225340.webm (960x540, 748K)

>165 gb
fuck them I skipped nioh for less

Got any proof of this user?

>plebs
That would be anyone that still plays this shit game.

>auto syncing emotes
Fuck.
I know it's objectively better, but I kinda like the little bit of effort spent trying to time them manually.
Makes the screenshots feel a little rewarding to get.

>have to buy more space to play games you already payed for
Welcome to 1989, faggot.

This, Drakengard 3 JP voices was the worst at doing this shit
Fuck anyone that does this

Where is that stated? They've mentioned something about needing to do a Weekly Nightmare Hunt but I never saw it stated as a raid.

I was very excited for it since people kept praising the first one, though I never played it since I'm a poorfag and didn't owned any console, but I was sorely disappointed so I just stopped after Curse of Osiris.
Ultimately I'd be lying if I didn't had any fun at all, but fuck, being a sucker for looter shooter will be the end of me.

Attached: 1563999244335.jpg (1600x1066, 721K)

You retards act like compressed assets doesn't eat up a fuckton of resources to unpack before it gets used. If the install is 165, raw files of these would be at 700 at the very least. It's likely compressed enough to be deliverable but not compressed enough that it takes your computer 10,000 days to load one screen.

Reminds of of Titanfall with it's 50 gigs of audio

Microtransactions. Less games on your drive - less competitors. You would rather keep this shit and buy some more content for this game than fuck around with reinstalling.

Simple internet searches can prevent yourself from being a public imbecile

XBOX

Lmao no.A lot of games don't even need to take up much more than what's on the disc.

Then why this shit polluted the Blizzard launcher in the first place?

Didn't they said it would remain the exclusive storefront "forever"?

They had a partnership with Activision. That partnership is over.

Dumbest post I've read all day, congratulations on having literally no idea what you're talking about at all, that's rare even here.

Wrong.
165gb is being listed on the PSN store and the PS4 allocates additional space for unpacking and deleting previous files. The last full expansion was listed near 150gb but only ended up being about 90.

OP and everyone buying into his shit are dumb niggers.

Attached: 1453585855971.png (296x311, 234K)

and that's with raw audio and texture files
imagine if those assets were compressed

It's strange to me that they manage to add really cool locations and aesthetically pleasing content, which is either a one-time deal like shattered throne or any raid, or a fucking grind fest. Menagerie is alright I guess.
Seriously any worthy reward in this game is just grind grind grind grind 500 gambits, 1000 crucible matches, 500 multikills with your ass, 10000 headshots with your friend. Fuck this shit, this is not content, it's a scam.
It's much better to create one long encounter that's difficult to complete rather than one encounter that you have to complete a 100 times to get a reward. I've burnt out, fuck this game and fuck bungie for not only sticking to this grinding game design, but making it even more shameless than before.

It's you fucks who have absolutely no idea the tech behind the shit you consume. Just a bunch of mindless ants eating whatever. How the fuck is your CPU not doing any work decoding compressed assets? Ignoramuses, the couple of you.

Attached: 1559491877276.jpg (640x480, 37K)

I love how you're still dedicated to dying on this hill when you think a "moderate" compression algorithm would unpack to over four times the compressed filesize. You're an absolute moron.

How dare you reply to me.

It is using more CPU time but live decompression of audio and video are not significant concerns to modern systems, especially with GPU acceleration. Decompressing assets wholesale is another matter but not one we're discussing right now.

It's only a performance issue for toasters. Stop being poor.

Is the game in a fun state at the moment? I played at launch, got through the initial raid and it became boring and there wasn't much to do except a few weekly things. Then I came back and played through the first two small expansions, did some of the end game stuff and it felt like the basics hadn't changed, so I left. I've heard tons of talk about Forsaken making it better and how there's a lot more to do now, but is there any truth to that?

Attached: 1543476608415s.jpg (250x250, 5K)

fuck the jews man

no
no
no
yes
yes
"tons"

no
Last gen average was around 12 to 15 gigs
Stop mistaking bloat for content retard

Attached: Destiny 2 2019.08.09 - 11.13.40.26.jpg (3840x1600, 914K)

Yeah, Forsaken added about twice as much content and fixed around mechanical things.

He's not far off the mark about that, depends what data we're talking. Uncompressed audio can easily be shrunk tenfold with little loss to quality. Same goes for video, even more so.

There is literal evidence of everything he said.

how are you playing games on a pc without at least 2 1tb ssd/hdd?

they arnt fucking expensive.

Attached: think.png (164x202, 53K)

D1 was carried hard by the great pvp, d2’s is noticeably worse, though it’s still good enough to keep it alive. I’ll be picking up the game anyway once it becomes free to play and I can transfer my save file from my old Xbox to my ps4 to try things out, though their expansions are still overpriced which is a hard sell for new players.

>One fucking game takes over 10% of one fucking terabyte
>there's no absolutely fucking problem with this
Zoomers need to hang

I have a 250GB HDD from 2004 and I exclusively play Japanese pornographic games

user said above that they're shipping uncompressed files. I said that's not probable.

It's not an issue to me but might be an issue to majority of bungie's audience. It's not like more than half of PC users have good specs, anyways. Isn't 80% of Steam users using a toaster from that one survey Valve did?

then this isnt a game for you then

Shut the fuck up if you haven't been paying attention to destiny because you clearly haven't done your research scrub

>Last gen the average game was 8GB, what happened?

games get bigger, and bigger HDDs get cheaper
it's not rocket science, retard.

Should I drop the $40 to start playing Forsaken now, or just wait until Shadowkeep and the Steam migration? I'm still confused how the F2P parts work. Will buying Shadowkeep get me everything I need?

I can't be the only one who wants bungie to succeed now they have abandoned the shipwreck that is activision blizzard. I used to love blizzard but fuck activision.

I didn't play much pvp in D1, but in D2 it's an extremely frustrating homoerotic experience. 47% of time you get ass raped with 0.1% chance of counterplay. 47% of time you ass rape everybody you see with them having 0.1% chance of counterplay and the remaining 6% it's a fair battle of wits and skills.
Also the mechanics feel like absolute dogshit with m+kb

>user posts truth
>Gets ignored
Never change, Yea Forums

>games got bigger
>DOOM a 10ish hour game is 50GB

>The average RPG last gen which was 100hours long is barely 8GB

lol no

I don’t see the point in needing to maintain a full terabyte of games on your hdd anyway, especially when you can download a ~100 gb game in 10-15 minutes with a decent connection if you randomly feel like playing it. I only keep games I regularly play installed.

>90
>small
lol enjoy your 100 gb game dumb zoomer

Can you guys wait for my 3rd world internet providers' speeds to catch up? 165gb would literally take around 3-4 days to download for me.
Thank.

Pretty sure shadowkeep includes all previous expansions.

>new games need up to 200 GB hd space
>only plays with internet connection

Attached: 1559931636705.jpg (286x280, 22K)

>The average RPG last gen which was 100hours long is barely 8GB
>said RPG looked like ass and reused assets x100
thanks for proving my point.

user it got so much better after curse trust me.

Keep moving that goalpost

Free players get access to every planet and mode, but particular bits of gear or content will need the appropriate expansion to get.
IIRC you can pick and choose what you buy at what time to get the "full" experience.

my Honey select was around 240GB, if i dont have space for porn, even less for a crappy game like Destiny 2.

Its in a great state rn user but i would recommend waiting till shadow keep because you will have to grind so much for stuff rn, and a lot of armor that you may like wont be as good as the new armor that will release.

what a damn shame...

Attached: glitch.webm (1280x720, 2.3M)

>moving goalposts
i just did the same thing as you did, friend :)

They're deliberately bloating it to force other live games off your drive.

1. Hard drive corps pay publishers do it to push external drives because that's their main consumers after affordable enclosures were available.
2. Compression is a dead art to every company but nintendo, and even they're slipping
3. Getting you to install a 150GB game makes you less likely to uninstall it because of the time investment.

>get an external hard drive
lol no, I think I'll just get a better game instead.

No one said it was small, retard. OP is straight up posting bullshit to start a bait thread.

>Other game takes up 90GB of space

>Seriously any worthy reward in this game is just grind grind grind grind 500 gambits, 1000 crucible matches, 500 multikills with your ass, 10000 headshots with your friend

This. Destiny is not actually a game you play for fun. It's a game you play to fill up checklists. Like the worst parts of any MMO with none of the good parts. No ingame LFG or notice board. No trading. Hell you can't even talk to other players, it's opt-in and text only and only at the tower.

Attached: Titan.png (422x549, 111K)

more like least well optimized game ever

>then then

nice one destinycuck

kek

Meanwhile fast rmx is like 300 mb

youtu.be/aDAkVPTn8cc

The absolute state of space optimization

Really hope steam will step up and add a download size selection when installing a game.
>how much grafix do you want?
>low settings for 10 gb
>medium for 20 gb
>or pants on head retarded ultra settings for 0.165 tb

Attached: download-size.jpg (640x480, 62K)

>Get low settings installation
>Game is so optimized that I can get high settings
>download this 50GB patch :)

>all the old raids
You mean the old leviathan ones? When did Bungie say that?

It's not like Destiny can't be though since there's moments where it really shines, it just needs more worthwhile stuff instead of pointless busy work and forcing players to replay old activities for hours on end just to unlock something new

I think gears of war 4 on pc is about 180 gigs

If you don't like the gameplay and don't play for the sake of playing the game, only for the checklist, stop playing.
You don't see anyone complaining replaying the same content over and over in Halo 3, CS, or Diablo, yet people do it anyway. Because it's fun.
In Destiny, you get something out of it too, that's the difference.
If it's not fun for you, don't do it.

The checklist IS the problem. Listen, that game (currently) is still full price, and each expansion and season pass on top of that is 20$-40$. And it has microtransactions. When you're paying such a premium for a game, the content you receive should NOT be such mindless trash. It's the same thing blizzard & apple do, they charge their fans exorbitant amounts of cash to fool them into thinking they're getting a high quality experience when really it's basic & barebones

That's the genre. Same shit with anthem, division, warframe, borderlands, you name it.

Rage with original uncompressed textures was around 1TB.

The only reason shit games like Destiny are bloated is because they don't know what fucking compression is and they need multiple language packs with uncompressed audio.

I stopped shortly after the release of black armory. I tried to check it out a couple of months later and didn’t realize how absolutely fucking slow the gameplay was; its terrible. The time gate trickle release of content is insulting. Gambit is, has always, and forever will be shit; impossible for bungie to balance, severing it into a completely different game mode just to make it playable is gay. You can also forget about ever having unique, good, or interesting guns or it will upset “muh pvp.” Don’t forget peer to peer servers. I started playing destiny 1 beta and even then they were sabotaging the game for pvp. The art direction in d2 is also complete garbage. It’s a trash franchise and I hope it dies forever

Attached: 578996A8-E241-49EC-8BC5-9CE9C3AA01C7.jpg (400x300, 22K)

I'm not a fan. I don't know. Halo had very simar gameplay and I play those games to this day with no incentive to grind. Destiny lost something in translation.

Attached: 1556956583673.png (312x350, 96K)

>got D2 when they released it as F2P a year or so afer launch
>liked it a lot, even bought the season pass for Forsaken
>lose my internet right before the forges open up
>finally got it back a month ago
>install D2 to catch up
>can't access any content post-forges
>bungie claims i don't have Forsaken on my account and because i purchased it through Battle.Net they can't fix the problem (now that they split from ActiBlizz) and i have to buy it again

fuck that

I ain't falling for that again, I'm too short on cash to blow it on vidyas at the moment anyway

Attached: 1565130135833.jpg (640x640, 32K)

shit i meant anything Forsaken, not post-forges

Halo is not a looter shooter. It's a shooter. Go play Doom.

are they adding moth people yet?

Attached: 1425578661811.jpg (500x353, 61K)

this
devs being lazy and don't compress their files anymore

Is the base game itself any worth to play through? I got it ''free'' from ps+ sometime ago, but havent have time to try it.

What in the fuck where is the 115-odd GB going to that can't be squashed into something around 50GB?
Just what the fuck makes this file so large? Uncompressed shit? No way it's that simple unless they have a different pre-rendered cutscene or something for every single resolution up to like 16k accurately

How about letting the player opt out of shit like foreign languages or 4k updates? That shit should be optional!

Basically PS4 allocates extra space to unpack all the data before it deletes the old stuff.

Every time that they touch the spaghetti code they unravel it more for a slight change, but then add more spaghetti.

>gamer shows you how to shrink game sizes to 0gb with this 1 weird trick

But Why did the looter part ruin the shooter part?

>looter
Because the game is all about getting loot
which means you have to do busywork grinding to play the game.

Remember when you had your PS1 and having an 8 Mb memory card was a big deal?

Attached: 313dZv4w0aL._SX342_.jpg (342x342, 6K)

Because the looter part was needed to make a game-as-a-service without PvP. When they figure out how to make a PvE game with infinite vertical progression, you'll know.

The entire collection is on sale for $40 is it worth picking up if I have no one to play with?

Somehow gamebryo doesn't seem so shit anymore, Bethesda are the kings of compression.

Fuck this mentality
>hurrr the person can only ever play one game and it's ours
I can download entire console libraries that aren't even 1% of this game's size, why would i waste my time on some probably always online piece of shit?

This. Should be modular downloads where you chose texture size and localization.

What the fuck are you talking about :D, do you even know what the fuck is compression dumbass. See jpg/png, mp3/flac. 8k cutscenes and lossless audio is meme in videogames, there is a reason why player made texture packs are better looking and optimized than from the real devs who just upscale them for no reason but to say we got HD TEXTURES

Why did it need infinite vertical progression? Halo Reach also had armor customization and PvP and PvE and nobody complained there.

You know, Destiny's story was originally much more linear (but also more fleshed out)

Jason Jones decided he didn't like that and he wanted players to "make their own story" so the game was rebooted less than a year before launch. Then the lead writer since Halo 2 quit because all his work was thrown out. We saw how that mess ended.

>lossless audio
>videogame
absolute retarded

Another dumbass

>load screens can be upwards of 30 seconds
Maybe stop playing on a fucking toaster with a shitty i5

>You can also forget about ever having unique, good, or interesting guns or it will upset “muh pvp.”
Main reason why I hate games like these that try to have balanced PvP. You have this over the top setting with god-like entities that can create demigod beings through one method or another in order to battle other demigod beings and you have to keep shit pretty tame because people can't handle being shit on by someone that put in time to acquire power.

They're adding it up-front, but it will trickle down over the course of a year until D3. Remember waiting a month for Sleeper in TFK?

explain

>Why did it need infinite vertical progression?
You need vertical progression to keep people grinding without complaining. They see improvement and that motivates them. If you make horizontal progression you end up with Guild Wars or Warframe. You have thousands of things to do, but you don't do them anyways because they are useless because they don't improve you.
Halo's shtick was PvP. That's a lot of replayability. PvE was a means to an end. Neither Destiny, or Guild Wars, or Warframe have compelling PvP. So we end up here.
Most people don't give a flying fuck about a half-assed story with plot holes on each step.

>uncompressed audio
>uncompressed textures
>efficient programming is no longer a standard
You could make a virtually identical game at 12GB if you weren't a team of retarded latte-chugging faggots and Indians.

Attached: __hakurei_reimu_touhou_drawn_by_leon_mikiri_hassha__6245377e5dd4e92bd40cd6f816eadccb.jpg (516x830, 233K)

Honestly I never cared about Halo's story that much, the lore of Destiny is above anything in Halo ever, the question is was Jason behind that lore too or not

Attached: w122.png (500x384, 99K)

But Steam says it's going to require 105gb of available space?

Based reimu, deserves a tummy tickle

This dude, I like him but at the same time hate him.

Hopefully this week he announces something

That is the size for PS4, you retards. Do a little research before REEEEEEEEEing to this fucking board to make a shitty post. PS4 always has an inflated "required" hard disk size because of the fucking way it copies and installs. The actual installed size is always smaller. On PC, it sits at 87.7GB currently. Its going to add maybe 40GB AT MOST. Settle down, you fuckwits.

That's for shadowkeep man. The expansion. D2 and all the dlc is still on blizzard launcher

Uh huh, sure you could. Fucking armchairs.

Oh shut the fuck up. That's the size of everything altogether. Just go back to playing Custom Order Maid, you tranny.

>165gb
If you would've told me this 10 years ago I would've thought it was a near-perfect simulation of reality.

I blame this on PC fags and their "mega textures"

Who the fuck plays this garbage? It's just WoW with Call of Duty gameplay in space.

the sources are from an email about cross save and moving to steam though
of course steam games also use that method to update

Nothing warrants 165 GB. Nothing even warrants 30 GB.

>It warrants the huge size increase
No it doesn't you fucking Bungie shill. Fuck off nobody is installing this clusterfuck.

How hard is it to make a setting where you install bigass textures seperate

Holy shit 162gb, the open world will be bigger than skyrim or witcher 3.

>Warframe
You really think they're useless? You don't understand the concept of horizontal progression then. You can find gear you really like since they're all so different. It also does make you better. You can make loadouts for every situation, optimize as much as you can. It's about getting better for a specific niche. You always get better, but at something practical rather than increasing an arbitrary number.
You always want the newest stuff because it's always fresh.
Vertical progression gets old one hour in. At level 10 you are the same as at level 50, numbers just get bigger. There are very few differences between gun and while sure, exotics can somewhat defy conventions, imagine having every gun perform like an exotic. That's what horizontal progression does for a game. The catch is that you have to provide different situation challenging the player differently so that they make use of different equipment.

I don't think the game is amazing or anything but it's so much more involving to have so many options

>reworking the progression system
>new UI
>new modes
>new effects
>165 GB
What the fuck nigger?

you really need to learn how to tell when bungie is lying
they've been doing it since D1 launch, every DLC was supposed to be full to the brim with "tons" of new things that always end up being
reskins, lazy level design, and often just flat out "we didn't have time guys, we're sorry"
D2 was supposed to have a quest for every exotic, and season of opulence was supposed to have 3 week long events each dedicated to one of the three elements, arc week came and went, were are the void and solar weeks?
Stop believing bungie's lies and stop listening to the """destiny community"""

This, devs are fucking wasteful cunts nowadays.

>D2 was supposed to have a quest for every exotic, and season of opulence was supposed to have 3 week long events each dedicated to one of the three elements, arc week came and went, were are the void and solar weeks?
Do you have a single fact to back that up?

What horizontal progression gives you is retards complaining that there's no "endgame", asking for more difficulty and rewards that trivialize that difficulty (and we're back to square one). These are the people that want the newest stuff.
Your average casual player, they will get the average loadout, get the average best stuff, and do the average activities of slashing shit then taking a 6 month break until content drops.
You don't need a niche loadout for each activity in a casual game. You don't need to experience the open worlds in Warframe to their fullest, there's no story, it's like the 7 gorillion No Man's Sky procedurally generated worlds. At least with vertical progression you can keep a more interesting carrot in sight for longer.

They just need to add more hardcore missions
Or make the base game have difficulty settings, because nowdays even the hardest content is hard because other people is stupid.
My favourite content in D2 is Whisper mission and Shattered throne. They are like pinacle FPS experience.

Attached: SBY3ARvZ_400x400.jpg (400x400, 21K)

The entire game is going to be around 100-110gb. This article is just another sad attempt by some dying "gaming news outlet" to get a few extra clicks

I was interested in trying it when it goes F2P but not if it takes up that much fucking space.

They threw out most of Joe Staten's lore for the original story draft and repurposed it as grimoire cards or as dlc (we're still seeing things in New DLC's that were part of the original 2013 story draft)

So yes, all the cool "behind the scenes" type shit you like is in fact part of the story they threw out.

Destiny was originally supposed to have moth people and lion people. Real shit, look it up. You could have played as a lion man.

That's just your assumptions though, because we'll never know the truth, there's a 2016 video of Destiny UI where they show the evolution of UI and at some point they show old UI mission where Oryx is labeled Lord Oryx and you can hand him over missions as well as Osiris

Attached: 0_qFgGPIVUFTXliMt9.jpg (970x600, 95K)

That was just for save data, you weren't installing games to your memory card. The Playstation had notably poor loading times as well.

Meanwhile hard drives keep getting cheaper all the time.
What's the problem?

That's a problem with DE's terrible mission design and broken scaling, not horizontal progression per se.

>there's no story
there's one but that's beside the point. You don't need a story at all especially not in an horizontal game.
Story actually holds destiny back because going through the same scenario again and again for strikes, world events or whatever gets really boring and frankly tiring. Leave things vague, sprinkle some randomly generated stuff to make things slightly different in the manner of diablo rifts. Each session becomes its own story in a way. In monster hunter for example, nobody gives two shits about the story, but hunting the same monster can make you travel to different locations on the same map, pull off different tricks (in world even more so), making the experience a lot more engaging when repeated again and again.

I mean you don't even have to go pure horizontal. Take a look at PoE. There are so many ways that you can get through the game that people play multiple characters per league. And there's endgame. Both of those thing have nothing to do with the fact that progression resets. There are countless builds worth trying. That's repayable content.

Of course you're going to argue that casuals also only play through poe once or something along these lines. Destiny mistake was catering to casuals alone. You know what keeps a game alive? The hardcore nerds who keep talking about the game, bringing their friends, or their viewers in the case of youtubers and streamers. They're also the floor for your player statistics inbetween updates. No casual will join a dead game, and no casual stays on the same game for prolonged periods of time no matter how hard you try to keep them there.

Moth people turned into the Hive, it's why they have larvae and why Oryx has moth wings

Attached: Destiny-Concept-Art-Daniel-Chavez-Moth-Lord.jpg (1920x1756, 761K)

But we do know. Multiple ex-bungie employees have been interviewed and they've all said the same thing.

>You could've played as mothman
one day i'll find a good moth-with-a-gun simulator

the real cost is the cost on your storage drive. If I get a beefier ssd (computer in general really) I might pick it up when it goes f2p.

The definition of wide as the sea, deep as a puddle.

thats probably the largest file size to ingame content discrepancy ratio ever
there is literally nothing in the game
every mission is just walking through the dungeon backwards
its shit

Normalfags and ego-obsessed self inserters would be triggered by anything that isn't a differently coloured humanoid.
>still no game where you can play as a badass four arm insect/beetle swordsman

Its not even particularly wide. The "open world" maps are tiny, the social space isn't social, strikes are few and far between, raids are short once you know the mechanics. They just make you repeat all this ad nauseum for hundreds of hours to chase numbers

Source me

There are limited numbers of slots in a computer. Motherboards in your average joe's computer (probably yours too) only have two lanes running at the highest speed, cheaper mobos only have one. If you add more it'll get slower and even then you don't have an unlimited number of them. You can't make infinitely bigger drives and the higher the density, the higher the rate of failure and often, the slower they get too.

That's not even talking about the poor console plebs who can only fit one drive.

>not a shit computer owner here

then stop buying games with big installs or high spec reqs. learn some self control fgt

>next console gen has an SSD
>can store one AAA game

Attached: 1425421976396.jpg (920x380, 69K)

It's not very wide at all. It's more like a funnel.
Actually, a pipe.

so, my one 2tb hdd fits everything fine

Yes it's cringetaku but it goes into detail of multiple reasons how bungie fucked their game up, unintentionally or otherwise.
kotaku.com/the-messy-true-story-behind-the-making-of-destiny-1737556731

well good for you dude, that's not everyone else's situation. it'd take me weeks to download 100 gb. There's no reason developers can't cut down on the bloat.

Pastebin it fag.

lack of physical distribution so no need to fit the game on a disc. all kinds of quick and dirty unoptimized trash sneaks into the game because "good enough" doesnt mean the game is in an unshippable state anymore.

So I want to get back into this game when Shadowkeep releases. I stopped playing it when Forsaken released and I'm on Xbox and I want to migrate to PC but I'm not sure how the cross-save will work.

Attached: TDBStrike.jpg (1280x720, 78K)

nigga they just put up a site about it
bungie.net/7/en/CrossSave

>LARGEST GAME EVER
oh boy!
>in filesize
who fucking cares

Can't wait for the 150gb fitgirl repack that fails 9/10 installs and adds malware

>It's not an issue to me but might be an issue to majority of bungie's audience. It's not like more than half of PC users have good specs, anyways. Isn't 80% of Steam users using a toaster from that one survey Valve did?

realtime compression decompression hasnt been an issue for gaming and other compute loads since the pentium. fucking retard

>They decided it was too campy and linear

And used it anyway by your logic? I believe parts of the Statens story could've made it into the game as lore of the original characters but only as tribute to him or whatever, the new lore is probably something they came up with later, since I doubt they could be using Statens ideas 6 years and 2 games into.
It's impressive if they do though
But I never was a fan of Statens work on Halo
The cinematography was cool not the story itself

Attached: 2296741-001540_screen.jpg (629x960, 94K)

A story is good to generate hype for the casuals by posting trailers on youtube and twitter. People won't dump your game, they will put it aside to revisit later. But yes, you don't need a good one.

PoE gets 100000 players on league release and after a while it goes down to 10000. That's some shit retention. The countless builds boil down to playing cookie clicker, killing everything in sight while dancing through a hallway. You can try a lot of things but only your hardcore people will try it.

What keeps a game alive is timely updates that do not shit on the previous iteration. How well you capture casuals is a magic secret formula that appears with shit like dota, lol, fortnite, and so on. It's a mix of vertical shit (battle passes, building your profile, pvp) with horizontal (minigames, limited time events).

Therefore, the day somebody figures infinite vertical progression, they will be able to keep veterans in check, and they will be able to redirect their efforts to pumping out horizontal garbage.

I'm wondering HOW it's going to work with someone who missed out on an entire year of content...

how would it not work?

what do you even mean by that? you just didn't do the content

and games with more content still took less harddrive space, you're /g/let, go kill yourself fucking moron

There better be a goddamn wefuckblackgirls.com siterip in that download.

Remember when Skyrim was first leaked and it was like 6 or 7 gb and everyone was laughing at it for being so small?

Man I miss that.

>FMVs and uncompressed audio means lots of content!

If you read the article you'll notice it says Staten's story team eventually all left or were canned but before that, their work was repurposed or shelved for later.

We still haven't seen everything from 2013 destiny, not just story concepts but actual assets, locations, characters, etc. Much of it was repurposed as DLC or even shoved into the sequel but there's still more to come. It's honestly ridiculous how much they're stretching things out.

(Io in D2 = cut mars expansion from D1. Old Chicago = assets ingame, never appeared. Europa/Enceladus = Assets ingame, never appeared. Osiris = Primary character in D1 2013 story, never appeared until D1 DLC. Saturn Derelict = Key location in D1 2013 story, Shelved for D1 DLC. EDZ = present in 2013 game build (pic related) never seen until D2 in 2017. )

>it's another hive expansion
why is it so hard to shit out another enemy race?

Attached: 1564888564508.png (1246x899, 1.8M)

>what happened?
a mix between marketing and stupidity, they think by making you install a huge game you won't install anything else and instead keep playing their game as much as they can throw content to you, but in reality the devs just became so incompetent they have no idea on how to compress files correctly or how to make good looking 3D models without fuck tons of polygon and nice textures and let's not forgot line and line of code that could also be optimized but pajeet don't know how to do that

>buying mechanical HDDs
>in 2019

Attached: 1304717883832.png (679x427, 14K)

It's actually insane how incompetent Bungie is

>and no casual stays on the same game for prolonged periods of time no matter how hard you try to keep them there
Shit, that just makes me realize that all the abusively aggressive "player retention" tactics achieve nothing and only make life worse for the players that would play the game anyway.

Attached: 1445914542976.png (400x599, 255K)

Makes sence since the game was complete, they just didnt like the story so why let the assets go to waste it's not even funny when you look and Bungies history of making Halo 2 and 3

How does a game with a handful of tiny maps take up 100gb worth of space, let alone 165gb? You have bigger games on the PS2 that fit on a standard DVD.

It's always audio

>D1 was carried hard by the great pvp,
Lmao what the actual fuck user

Man so many lies in a single post.

No, it's not funny. It's sad. Bungie makes the same mistakes over and over again, destiny is where it finally caught up to them but the game is still successful and we'll never get what it was supposed to be so I guess we're just fucked

People don't give two shits about BL3's story, there's nothing about it in the trailers as far as I've seen (haven't really watched much).

People don't care about warframe story's either. The recent trailer that went in theatres was just random fighting iirc, nothing to do with any planned updates.

I can't think of any other looter shooter that had a trailer this year. Was div2 released in 2019? If then it tried to sell on its location (washington DC) rather than a story. Typical ubisoft to be honest. That's what they do with most of their franchises like asscreed. "Look at what place or era you can visit".

Casuals just want cool stuff. Sure you can use a story but what you really want is a trailer that makes them think "I want to do that". You don't need a story for that.

That's not to say a story is useless. Pure, chaotic horizontal progression can be confusing for newcomers and a story can provide a default path or a short term goal to get started but it really isn't what makes or break a looter shooter, any live service game for that matter.

OP-TEE-MEE-ZAY-SHEN? Dafuck you're talking about?! (c)modern_gamedevs

Really though, they are just shameless. I was ass-blasted to Hell when it turned out UT2004 4.2GB install size was larger than the free space my HDD had left after a clean Win98 install.

ALthough every win98 install was a clean one lololol

This. Absolutely hate the bootlickers with their "ooh its cheap just to buy another hard drive".
Yeah it's cheap, doesn't mean I enjoy wasting my time buying and installing a hdd just to play destiny of all games.
I live in the UK too, which means at best I get a 15mbps download speed on account of the 50s technology we use for our wifi.

I don't know where you live, but even if that's how fast you download, no company should think it's profitable to cater to the very few areas in the world that can actually download fast. That would be restricting themselves to a really small market for no reason. No, internet threads on Yea Forums and /g/ are not good samples to represent the general population. That's like looking in a thread where everyone compare dick sizes and everyone has 7" or more. Nobody's going to post their 4" dicks. Yet you don't think everyone has 7" dicks, do you?

Let's keep in mind that bandwidth and latency are different and you can have fuckall bandwidth with 5ms ping. So don't go saying people with shit internet have no business playing online video games.

He's right to an extent. MP3 and FLAC take more processing power than WAV. Either you uncompress it to RAM (takes extra processing power and time) or process the compressed file on the fly which increases the required specs to run well. The only way around this is to use bitmaps and WAVs from the beginning so they can be loaded in the quickest and least demanding way.

>make game size shitty to turn me away from pirating your shitty game which I dont want to pirate anyways
Good going guys

Literally why can't language files only be downloaded if you actually pick that language? It's not like people change those at all times, you pick yours and stay with it so other files are 100% wasted 99% of the time.
I'd also love if downloading the videos was optional. Why bother if you're just going to skip everything anyway.

haven't followed the discussion beyond the post you replied but the stuff that needs to be read fast are general sfx like gunshots, hits, ui effects, etc. I doubt that's what's taking most of the size especially since a lot of it is reused from previous content and does not need to be duplicated. Voicelines, cutscenes, bgms, and all the big files don't need to be WAV.

>Halo's shtick was PvP. That's a lot of replayability.
It was both. Halo come out during an era where a lot of shooters, especially console ones, offered a solid singleplayer campaign but also some PvP modes to mess around in.

If I'm not wrong the extra processing power from mp3s and flacs comes from all the metadata associated with them and that they're compressed. What is it that devs do with their audio?

Saw a breakdown of Doom 2016 and where its file size came from and like 15gb of it was audio alone. Not the biggest proportion mind you. How does it get so inflated?

Can you play this alone? Not interested in raids and shit.
I was planning on getting it via TPB

>How does it get so inflated?

Lootbox opening sounds.

Attached: 15646993356092.jpg (1069x832, 317K)

>They're reworking the entire progression system
Lie, they have no plans on touching progression
>They're adding new planets
Only the moon
>They're adding new modes
Only for pvp
>They're bringing back old contend from D1
Only the moon but not any of the content from the moon, they are making new content for it. They are also briging back the very first mission of D1 but that's it
>They're merging all players to the New Light Edition with new effects for PC and Console owners
This statement doesn't make any sense, New Light is just the version name they gave to the F2P destiny 2 that is releasing with Shadowkeep, there isn't going to be anything new.
>Adding tons more weapons
"Tons" is a bit of a stretch, most likely same amount or less than Forsaken since they've already stated that Shadowkeep is bigger than RoI in D1 but smaller than Forsaken
>Adding all the old raids
They aren't
>a complete UI overhaul
They aren't

Pretty much the only upgrade they are doing is reworking armor system to be like warframe, aka everything is mods.

I'm too good when it comes to sound design, I mostly deal with the programming and art side of that stuff.
I'm thinking that sound isn't like a picture. When you want to compress an image, you can take a bunch of pixels that look relatively similar and describe them as one big blob in the file. Sound being a wave and all that probably can't afford to do that. Every single "pixel" of a song is just as important as the rest.

I have no idea how audio compression works to be honest so this is just how I imagine things to be.

Doesn't doom have a dynamic soundtrack as well? Where the intensity changes depending on what's happening. All this layering probably takes some space. I might be confusing with another game though.

>What is it that devs do with their audio?
WAVs, which is raw sound data.

Think of compression like this:
>Raw data: the quick brown fox jumped over the lazy dog (44 bytes)
>Compressed data: fjioanzjife (11 bytes)
>A series of complex instructions and algorithms to turn the compressed data into actually readable raw data
So yeah the fact that it's compressed means it requires more processing power. Metadata just stores things like album title, artist, the fact that it's an mp3 file, length, etc. It's probably a minuscule amount but might look good to publishers who think a lowering of minimum system requirements (even a small amount) is worth it as it'll run on more machines.

I'm not too sure exactly how sound data is compressed. But have you ever looked at a file in audacity? If you zoom in all the way you'll see exact points to the sound wave. WAV is just a series of these points.

So it's like the equivalent of vectors for images? Interesting. You'd think it would be really small considering vectors weigh fuckall compared to rasters.

44.1khz means 44100 data points per second of audio.

honestly i think my entire emulation folder is less than 165 GB and I have pretty much every game for every system up through the dreamcast.

see
a pipe going straight to a septic tank.

Shhhhh.

Can't let retards know the truth. Why, they'd need to use their brains, then.

Just optimize your shit Bungie, holy fuck.

It’s not adding 165gb user, the game is already like 100gb

Game is almost as poorly coded as division 2

wow, even more uncompressed media files what an achievement, the least efficient storage to date

Attached: 1547284499337.gif (480x396, 608K)

it takes fuckall to read mp3s, and you sure as shit won't need the processing power while you're stuck watching cutscenes
there's absolutely no reason whatsoever to leave media files uncompressed, you retard

>Literally why can't language files only be downloaded if you actually pick that language?
fucking random slavs on torrent sites are more user-friendly than every fucking store out there
makes no sense

Attached: 1551183637353.png (398x211, 97K)

why the fuck would you use one externally? Just jam it in, I doubt you've filled the rack.

>>hurrr the person can only ever play one game and it's ours
well if you're playing something else, you're not buying our sweet microtransactions!

>“Let’s say a designer wants to go in and move a resource node two inches,” said one person familiar with the engine. “They go into the editor. First they have to load their map overnight. It takes eight hours to input their map overnight. They get [into the office] in the morning. If their importer didn’t fail, they open the map. It takes about 20 minutes to open. They go in and they move that node two feet. And then they’d do a 15-20 minute compile. Just to do a half-second change.”
Did you expect any different from the studio responsible for this beautiful quote?

Attached: 1557356576997.png (1080x1080, 734K)

I'm starting to see the point of those chinese suicide nets.
What the fuck.

I've been playing Destiny on and off since the Beta back in 2014. It has so much potential to be good but i've always felt like they distribute their time and effort in the wrong places.

Attached: 8s4z121zvji01.jpg (750x733, 40K)

Every time they get something right they immediately fuck up something else. If they had just built off Destiny 1 for 2 it would have been perfect. Instead they made loot boring as shit and they ruined pvp because ESPORTS

Yeah, I don't understand who could've played that and thought "Wow, this is such an upgrade from our first game". A lot of Destiny is about the power fantasy, and running around with two peashooters in D2Y1 just took all that away.

I would say the current system in place is even better than the one we had in D1 though.
We need more PVP maps and incentives to play PVP, maybe more unique armor for completing certain feats?

The problem is that Bungie can't put an exclusive gun behind getting a 50 kill streak because their trying to cater to casuals too much. I've never had a 50-kill streak in PVP but i sure as hell wouldnt be upset if that gave you something special that your character could use.

Holy shit, if true this is a big fucking red flag. The kind of shit they had to fix it before moving on. Stuff like that kills a dev.

You can play alone, but some activities like strikes and menagerie force matchmaking on you

Game is not that difficult for basic shit, but solo-ing tough dungeons like Whisper, Zero Hour, and Shattered Throne are rewarding as fuck

Interesting stuff, thanks for expanding on it anons.

>currently 87
Time to uninstall forever.
Ah, who am I kidding, I'll keep eating shit. Won't buy the expansion before it goes on sale though.

if i have this shit on console can I transfer my account and purchases to pc after the new update or nah

yeah, now that activision is out of the picture, Destiny will transfer to steam and cross save will be available.

I wish it was possible to blank replace all the voices since I mute them anyway.

Yep. I'm doing that. All your purchases and armor and crap carries over when cross save launches.

This
A 1TB SSD costs $100

It's retarded. Most of it is just uncompressed sounds plus 4K content which 99% doesn't give a shit about

We need something like warzone from Halo 5, something like combined arms but with more players and constant PvE threats all around

Attached: 000000001.jpg (299x168, 9K)

>Get an external
Retarded game dev doesn't know shit about load speeds

This. It's an intentional strategy to monopolise your HDD in order to extract maximum playtime from the player. There's been a bit of talk about this in the past. You maximise file size to force other games off and to disincentivise deleting the game because you'll have to DL a million gb again. It's intentional

And of course there's no option to not download all of it. Just a simple dropdown menu when downloading could solve this.

Texture resolution:
>4k
>Large

Audio:
>Uncompressed (120gb)
>compressed (30gb) (may not run as well on older machines)
>Options for language packs

Just make the defaults download everything so retards don't complain that they didn't get French audio or high-res textures or whatever. Hide it under advanced download options if you have to.

>largest game ever
>165GB
Last time I checked, Ark was almost up to 190gb

>moving to Steam
oh no, epic bros. what do we do now?

The problem is that they force you to install voice data for all of the 10+ languages the game supports

Uncompressed garbage, praise Capcom, praise Monster Hunter World Iceborne

>165GB for this boring trash
kek

There're high points that are worth it, but only if you like space fantasy and scifi

destiny 2 is not worth wasting 165GB hard drive space

audio compression isn't going to make any difference in how the game runs

Am I the only one who doesn't need super HQ photorealistic graphics to enjoy his videogames?

Attached: 1409976166230.gif (288x256, 14K)

I mean, even graphics like PS1 are ok by me. I don't need to be able to see the fucking pores in their skin.

Attached: 54-capture_10042012_173615.jpg (640x480, 39K)

Its pretty gud desu but find a friend to get you up to speed. Your mission page to get up to current is gonna be filled to the fucking brim and you probably wont know where to start

Not at all, i prefer style over "hraphix". Its why SOTN looks better than bloodstained by miles

SSD's are dirt fucking cheap these days, buy one of those instead.

It was proven times and time again that quality of games dont affect its sales. If people bought fallout76 they will buy literally anything.
