I'm worried about custom stages; they talk about characters but not a peep about stages. There's a new stage for Guadua, but I'm not sure whether it's fully custom or it's an official stage made just for him.

if new characters hit, which they SHOULD. then new stages should follow, also, the tools havent been released yet, so that might come anyway.

but im 100% fucking okay with this. a battle-tested, fully fledged, fully moddable AND LEGAL smash engine for pc? SOLD!

do we even know if the devs used an editor originally? as hard as it regularly is, which im sure will be, its better if we get a scripting system, and just have to rely on the sandbox example and go around writing the character by hand. that was what made MUGEN popular back then and now that 20 years have passed since the birth of MUGEN, its time for a new game to follow what they started.

I feel like all smash clones are all basically doomed. Half the appeal is the roster, why the fuck would anyone play a stripped down version with generic characters? It's not like smash is a dead series or anything.

Isn't that the point of this power move? They're banking on becoming the indie MUGEN smash. Basically cementing them as the second fiddle to every other clone.

Which is why this is the best thing they could do. It basically makes sure the game will never die, and people can use their main from any smash game. Or fuck any fighting game for that matter. Smash MUGEN can never fail even if the editor is shit.

Rivals is pretty much the only successful one, and from what I've seen people like the characters and the autistic competitive side really likes the mechanics. It's never gonna be as big as smash, but it has a successfully built community.

I think it depends on how much Steam Workshop is integrated into the game. If you can download a character from the internet and plop it into the game like MUGEN, this is a non-issue.

Custom characters aren't used in ranked/tourney, they pretty much aren't official, but they have said they they can find someone to work with them, they can make some custom characters official

pretty much this, much like Doom, modding is what made it strong and so lasting. now, with Smash being the top all-ages family game, a way to make your own charas for a smash-like game can attract an audience just as strong.

I doubt custom characters will be allowed online at all. If they are, it'll probably be like Hat in Time where you can set up lobbies with whatever mods you have installed.

You underestimate the autism of fancreators. People have worked with the literal source code line by line to get shit working. Any kind of GUI for this shit will make it even so Joe No-Brain can make a character. Sure 90% of them will be shit, but all you gotta do is rely on another autist to compile the list of the best characters and download those only.

You said it yourself: The game is free. It also lets you buy characters with ingame money, and even if you don't want to do that there's a weekly rotation so you could play everyone in the game if you just have patience. Like that other user said though it's very samey. People like to talk about DBFZ as having samey characters, but Brawlhalla is that x10. It's still fun and I enjoy playing a few 4v4 lobbies every now and then, but RoA is a much better platform fighter since everyone plays very differently.

Being Free helps a lot, and the fact that the characters are very similar and are bone-based makes it easy to make a lot of, and people love big rosters in fighting games, even though this is never an inherent good.

Platform Fighters are SUPER niche in general. People regard Rivals as obscure, but you're gonna really need luck to find people who talk about Slap City or Roof Rage. Rivals got its ball going relatively early, and was a solid enough game that the people who play it love it for the mechanics and stick to it. Dan4nance has done good work in fostering his community, and while it's small, it's dedicated enough to keep the game alive. But the support is a double edged sword: The game has a bunch of DLC characters as expansions, but newbies read this as half the cast being unavailable from the core game.

Also the game is really hard, you will get stomped online.

If you can't play your custom fighters online in friend battles at the very least, there's going to be no point.

if it is anything like mugen and going with the 'including Sandbert and Gadua as example', coding AI and characters with special and unique scripting should be possible, for now we just wait and see what is their plan.

i am worried though that their idea for a character 'editor' is for you to just make sprites and sounds and shove them to follow predefined 'archetypes' like pic related.

no, workshop is coming later with the game's "definitive edition". I'm not sure how moddable the game is currently but I'm sure the announcement was made ahead of time for people to sprite and make mock-ups

It's just an announcement that the fighting game Rivals of Aether is going to support Steam Workshop creations now. Specifically, you're going to be allowed to make your own characters and drop them into the game. We don't know much more than that right now though.

Considering the panda bro is technically a mod character, I'm gonna say it's not an "ez character creator" or something like that.

The only elemental factions in the game are Earth, Air, Water and Fire. Though they're kind of loose with the definitions. One fire character uses a plasma sword, and air covers both lightning/clouds and tornadoes/flying. I guess metal can work with the Earth faction.

That's actually really cool, but it depends on the limitations of the character creator. The panda looked really complex, but will it let you have four different character "stances"? You'd need four times as many sprites as a normal character.

Palettes could be a big issue with it. I think the game handles alt colors by code (as seen with the "custom color" feature), not by separate spritesheets.

RoA is supporting custom characters (and maybe stages) in the near future. Depending on engine limitations, it could essentially be a proper Smash MUGEN.

Most of that look to be skin mods. This is is actual custom character creation, presumably with an official modding UI. It's less pasting Goku over Zetterburn and altering some graphics to make it work and more literally putting Goku in there with a Kaoi-ken mechanic and DBZ-esque beams and whatever you want, within the limits of the creator and your own autism of course.

I never played the game or really had any interest in it, but those constant threads did convince me to try out the Princess Remedy and Ittle Dew games which were pretty good.

I don't think you'll be able to fuck with the base content like you can in MUGEN, but just being able to add as many characters and stages as you want is good enough for me

No ledges, no grabs (aside from certain character specific command grabs) and shields are replaced by parries. Everything else is roughly the same.

I don't like it very much but it's definitely not a button masher. There's a lot that goes into the balance/frame data/hitboxes of moves. They have their own sponsored majors so if it was busted people would just pick the most busted guy and mash one button to win the prize money but they don't.
