>space
>being an ICOOONNN
Mason Walker
the furshit is probably gonna be overshadowed by third-parties, since this seems to be the closest we'll get to Smash x MUGEN
Aiden Price
>no throws
>no ledges
th...thanks...
Nathan Cruz
>no throws
Kinda sucks
>no ledges
I'm 100% ok with this
Liam Roberts
a couple moves (see Etalus and Clairen) work like throws, so if the scripting is powerful enough people could probably hack a grab system for their characters. no dice for ledges, though.
Joseph Williams
>no footage of the editor's interface
Worried laughter.

I'm worried about custom stages; they talk about characters but not a peep about stages. There's a new stage for Guadua, but I'm not sure whether it's fully custom or it's an official stage made just for him.
Colton Perry
if new characters hit, which they SHOULD. then new stages should follow, also, the tools havent been released yet, so that might come anyway.
but im 100% fucking okay with this. a battle-tested, fully fledged, fully moddable AND LEGAL smash engine for pc? SOLD!
Mason Rodriguez
i cant wait for someone to make the entirety of the smash ultimate roster + stages
James Parker
Time to make Earthworm Jim, seeing as how he fits the animal theme.
Jordan Ortiz
fuck Smash ports, people should try porting MUGEN characters over to test the limitations of the RoA engine
William Martin
>Wanting an editor with possible limited functionality.
do we even know if the devs used an editor originally? as hard as it regularly is, which im sure will be, its better if we get a scripting system, and just have to rely on the sandbox example and go around writing the character by hand. that was what made MUGEN popular back then and now that 20 years have passed since the birth of MUGEN, its time for a new game to follow what they started.
Charles Foster
time to make Melee Fox
Michael Cooper
Guadua isn't official himself, so it's possible
Lucas Ward
I feel like all smash clones are all basically doomed. Half the appeal is the roster, why the fuck would anyone play a stripped down version with generic characters? It's not like smash is a dead series or anything.
Landon Cox
Isn't that the point of this power move? They're banking on becoming the indie MUGEN smash. Basically cementing them as the second fiddle to every other clone.
Carter Wood
Which is why this is the best thing they could do. It basically makes sure the game will never die, and people can use their main from any smash game. Or fuck any fighting game for that matter. Smash MUGEN can never fail even if the editor is shit.
Xavier Allen
>a league of determined autists will finish Super Smash Flash 2 before McLeodGaming does
Ryan Reyes
Rivals is pretty much the only successful one, and from what I've seen people like the characters and the autistic competitive side really likes the mechanics. It's never gonna be as big as smash, but it has a successfully built community.
Logan Scott
Wait, I'm a smoothbrain, there's no legal problems with adding existing characters?
Blake Wood
I don't know the legalities of it but I think as long as Rivals doesn't claim to own the characters it's fair use?
Jacob Campbell
it's steam workshop dude
Andrew Sanders
based
Jordan Smith
Dude its the steam workshop. You can make your furry oc or you could port over Jak and Daxter from Playstation Allstars. Possibilities are endless.
James Collins
It's steam workshop, no one cares.
Anthony Gray
I think it depends on how much Steam Workshop is integrated into the game. If you can download a character from the internet and plop it into the game like MUGEN, this is a non-issue.
Hudson Clark
Crocodile
Fire
Grappler
Logan Cruz
Microsoft money
Custom characters aren't used in ranked/tourney, they pretty much aren't official, but they have said they they can find someone to work with them, they can make some custom characters official
Jonathan Evans
i just hope it allows for Total conversion capablilities.
>They dont put just the Characters and stages, but also the main game logic (menus, modes, all the works)
>once you have your assets all set, you can compile your game on a special container file.
>you can upload your file to the WS so people can play your smash clone.
pretty much this, much like Doom, modding is what made it strong and so lasting. now, with Smash being the top all-ages family game, a way to make your own charas for a smash-like game can attract an audience just as strong.
as it is implied, seems thats how it will go.
is there really more info? is there a link or something?
Charles Johnson
Wait what the fuck? So they're just letting anyone draw up and do their own hitboxes/framedata of any random character and allowing it into the game? What does this mean for the competitive scene? Are the devs themselves taking on the beta testing of all the inevitable MUGEN-tier busted shit they're going to get, or is it all going to go towards some "casual" mode so that they won't interfere with the tournament scene?
Matthew Evans
Why not just play brawlhalla? Its more popular and free to play?
Daniel Carter
Because Brawlhalla is lame and the characters play the same. They even share the same animations, why do you think there are so many?
Gavin Brooks
you're a fucking moron dude
Jayden Myers
twitter.com
Charles Thomas
Give me the Megaman function. I don't really care what the animal or element is. Maybe an Earth monkey covered in fruits so he can shoot actual lemons at people.
Noah Morales
This is cool and all but it'll be dead on the water if the character creator is shit.
Josiah Anderson
Hes in
Gavin Harris
Dunno, but i see my steam friends play it a lot. I dont play it. Just wondering why one game is more popular while other is still niche.
Jayden Anderson
I doubt custom characters will be allowed online at all. If they are, it'll probably be like Hat in Time where you can set up lobbies with whatever mods you have installed.
Cooper Hughes
Oh shit Ult with better gameplay? I'm down.
Robert Kelly
You underestimate the autism of fancreators. People have worked with the literal source code line by line to get shit working. Any kind of GUI for this shit will make it even so Joe No-Brain can make a character. Sure 90% of them will be shit, but all you gotta do is rely on another autist to compile the list of the best characters and download those only.
Andrew Sanders
there's a lot of easy ways to fuck this up
>custom AI
>custom stages
>scripting is good enough to allow for horde (like Biohazard) and boss (like Master Hand and Giygas) characters
if these things aren't supported then yes, it will likely be dead on arrival
Charles Foster
You said it yourself: The game is free. It also lets you buy characters with ingame money, and even if you don't want to do that there's a weekly rotation so you could play everyone in the game if you just have patience. Like that other user said though it's very samey. People like to talk about DBFZ as having samey characters, but Brawlhalla is that x10. It's still fun and I enjoy playing a few 4v4 lobbies every now and then, but RoA is a much better platform fighter since everyone plays very differently.
Dominic Williams
Being Free helps a lot, and the fact that the characters are very similar and are bone-based makes it easy to make a lot of, and people love big rosters in fighting games, even though this is never an inherent good.
Platform Fighters are SUPER niche in general. People regard Rivals as obscure, but you're gonna really need luck to find people who talk about Slap City or Roof Rage. Rivals got its ball going relatively early, and was a solid enough game that the people who play it love it for the mechanics and stick to it. Dan4nance has done good work in fostering his community, and while it's small, it's dedicated enough to keep the game alive. But the support is a double edged sword: The game has a bunch of DLC characters as expansions, but newbies read this as half the cast being unavailable from the core game.
Also the game is really hard, you will get stomped online.
Aaron Sanders
If you can't play your custom fighters online in friend battles at the very least, there's going to be no point.
Joseph Evans
>Spider
>Metal
>Trap setter and counter play

if it is anything like mugen and going with the 'including Sandbert and Gadua as example', coding AI and characters with special and unique scripting should be possible, for now we just wait and see what is their plan.
i am worried though that their idea for a character 'editor' is for you to just make sprites and sounds and shove them to follow predefined 'archetypes' like pic related.
this image is from an old mugen easy character maker, if THIS is their idea of 'making your own characters', then this whole thing is screwed.
William Hall
people seem to be focused on Smash stuff at the moment, I think we'll see quite a few ports before unique characters show up
Zachary Miller
Oh god it's going to get absolutely flooded with porn creations isn't it? Or maybe not since all workshop creations need to be approved before upload now. We'll definitely be getting a lot of OC donuts though. Get ready for neon wolves, angel and devil winged foxes and Reize
Andrew Harris
who do you think?
Carter Ross
is it out already?
Owen Brown
thats a pretty bad looking title
dont even know what this game is just saying
Thomas Carter
Chameleon
Metal
Rushdown w/ setplay projectiles
Connor Clark
no, workshop is coming later with the game's "definitive edition". I'm not sure how moddable the game is currently but I'm sure the announcement was made ahead of time for people to sprite and make mock-ups
Lucas Scott
It's just an announcement that the fighting game Rivals of Aether is going to support Steam Workshop creations now. Specifically, you're going to be allowed to make your own characters and drop them into the game. We don't know much more than that right now though.
Benjamin Thompson
no im talking about the actual title
the name of the game and the 4 element design thingy
looks pretty bad
Mason Sanchez
Considering the panda bro is technically a mod character, I'm gonna say it's not an "ez character creator" or something like that.
Ryan Gomez
The only elemental factions in the game are Earth, Air, Water and Fire. Though they're kind of loose with the definitions. One fire character uses a plasma sword, and air covers both lightning/clouds and tornadoes/flying. I guess metal can work with the Earth faction.
Dylan Smith
You can't read that it says Rivals of Aether?
Jeremiah Stewart
Evan Carter

It shoots ants out of its gun that do damage, its fast but bad at melee and takes alot of hits so its best to run away and shoot
Jace Fisher
Fuck. He's unironically in.
Alexander King
*slaps
Josiah Green
That's actually really cool, but it depends on the limitations of the character creator. The panda looked really complex, but will it let you have four different character "stances"? You'd need four times as many sprites as a normal character.
Nathaniel Gonzalez
This game is still around? I used to get taught coding by the lead designer.
FUCK that makes me feel old.
Jeremiah Cruz
>first characters that get in are going to be complete shitposts
Alexander Brown
I read my original comment and I typed something completely different from what I was thinking
I have no genuine fucking clue how I typed that. I dont even really remember what I meant to type anymore, im just going to go to bed
only the girl on the left has likable character design, and you know she is probo lesbian or something.
orc butch is shit, black phara is shit, extra fizzy ezreal is shit, tumnus is shit, and those 2 stone things have a design way too similar so its shit
Colton Ortiz
Palettes could be a big issue with it. I think the game handles alt colors by code (as seen with the "custom color" feature), not by separate spritesheets.
Wyatt Jackson
i dont get this thread, is RoA moddable? whats going on?
Nolan Sullivan

seems the game has already been moddable for quite some time, maybe this helps even more.
Aiden Sanchez
RoA is supporting custom characters (and maybe stages) in the near future. Depending on engine limitations, it could essentially be a proper Smash MUGEN.
Bentley White
>tfw slap city is dead
those threads were fun. YOU CAN'T SQUISH THE FISH
Dylan Nguyen
Most of that look to be skin mods. This is is actual custom character creation, presumably with an official modding UI. It's less pasting Goku over Zetterburn and altering some graphics to make it work and more literally putting Goku in there with a Kaoi-ken mechanic and DBZ-esque beams and whatever you want, within the limits of the creator and your own autism of course.
Joseph Collins
thats what i meant by this helping maybe.
so far there hasnt been any fully new characters or stages, but the bases were always there. as in, the devs were expecting this.
Wyatt Long
Has a character ever been nerfed as consistently as Fishbunjin? not even DDD took it this hard
Cooper Anderson
I never played the game or really had any interest in it, but those constant threads did convince me to try out the Princess Remedy and Ittle Dew games which were pretty good.
Sebastian Powell
So I guess no competitive run for this game.
Austin Perry
it's an opt-in system you fucking mong
Tyler Bailey
Rivals has been a competitive game for years. Where have you been?
Also, I doubt that you'll be able to use these characters outside of Exhibition mode. It would be useless if they were offline only, but I doubt they would be allowed in ranked.
Luis Ross
Seems pretty neat. Never played the game, but I can appreciate letting the community take charge on this kinda thing
Nathan Mitchell
Long shot, but I hope you can make total conversion mods through this. Making your own smash clone with 8 characters and balancing the game around them feels like a fun project
Easton Ward
I've never heard of this game but basically it's a smash clone with indie characters?
How different are it's mechanics from smash?
Jose Richardson
here's hoping we get more indies
Hunter Peterson
I don't think you'll be able to fuck with the base content like you can in MUGEN, but just being able to add as many characters and stages as you want is good enough for me
Dominic Anderson
No ledges, no grabs (aside from certain character specific command grabs) and shields are replaced by parries. Everything else is roughly the same.
Blake Rodriguez
>It's more popular
and I can't figure out why unless being F2P is literally why. Brawlhalla is trash and a literal button masher
Chase James
>unless being F2P is literally why
Of course it is, are you retarded? Going F2P ensures an endless supply of thirdworlders, BRs, Russians, and internet cafe faggots will play your game. It also guarantees that your game will be a glorified scam that isn't worth playing.
Mason Martinez
>an entire slot dedicated to the undertale shop runners
Blake Turner
>Brawlhalla is trash and a literal button masher
I don't like it very much but it's definitely not a button masher. There's a lot that goes into the balance/frame data/hitboxes of moves. They have their own sponsored majors so if it was busted people would just pick the most busted guy and mash one button to win the prize money but they don't.
Jason Gray
man that looks super stupid and i love it.
fucking undertale autism i fucking hate it but its so fascinating.
Mason Perez
I should play more rivals, it's more fun than smash to me.
Zachary White
I'm hoping this motherfucker is one of the first to be made, I wanted him over Shovel Knight as the second official guest
Landon Sanders
I hope whoever makes him has enough autism to redraw him in low res sprite format since my own autism will inevitably prevent me from playing any custom character that clashes too much with the game's style.
Jordan Stewart
honestly same. the spritework will probably be all over the place if the modding community blows up, but having a character whose art matches the game's will make it feel more natural.
Juan Gonzalez
>$50 worth of dlc
a little gross but it is a $15 dollar game.
Camden Adams
they're releasing another edition of the game (which is where workshop is planned to launch) with every character unlocked from the getgo, sucks for all the people who bought the current edition earlier
Jayden Rodriguez
Call me a boring motherfuck but finally I can have a Mario expy, or at least some more ordinary characters that don't plan around setting up objects. Kragg was like the only rival I enjoyed using.
Dominic Cook
Squid
Air
Grappler
Hunter Hill
There could be a hackish way of implementing ledges, but I assume the game doesn't have anything internally that detects them.
Brayden Harris
is the de-furfag-inator mod out yet
Kayden Johnson
More people played the dating game than the actual game.
Hudson Perry
wasn't that free though?
Jackson Reed
Yes. Also who knows how many are waiting for a new edition with all the DLC.
