I consider myself a horror movie expert. I made every logical choice fully aware of the tropes, and in my first playthrough everyone survived except the black guy. His survival conditions are completely arbitrary and based around whether he agrees to go to the watchtower and whether or not Emily gives him a flare gun. It's like the devs wanted him to die.
