The first one is fine, but the first half of the series is way better. The movies don't touch on the Spiral King fight and the first movie condenses the General fights into one battle (which is kinda cool the first time you see it, but that's about it).

Here me out: Dragon's Dogma. It has the video game equivalent of the Gainax ending where it goes from small scope to a huge scale, at least philosophically. The final fight is basically the fist fight from the ending of the 2nd movie.
