Long ranged-psychs were a no go. You had to rely on melee, psychokinesis, and damaging barriers instead. Which normally wouldn’t be a problem if the elephants didn’t stagger you almost everytime you do a melee combo.

I like how everytime Neku would grow as a person, Shades would take away said thing that helped Neku grow in the first place. Monkey’s paw at its finest.

They were a hassle for me at first but I was able to use them soon enough. It helps to set up some of your pins as sub-slots in order to make activating them easier.

You got one at the end of each day when doing the story for the first time, so you have 21 by the end. After that you need 5 Tektite, 2 Orichalcum, and 1 Dark Matter to trade in at Shibu-Q Heads. If you only spend it on pin slots and fusions you've got just about enough to last you the first time around.

As for Beat and Rhyme, we can sort of see a change in his behavior towards her. His first Entry Fee was her memories of HIM, implying that the one thing he cared about most was her thoughts towards him, instead of Rhyme herself as a person. Losing that forced him to reevaluate what she meant to him and in Week 3, she herself gets taken as Beat’s Entry Fee.

What really boggles the mind is did Joshua know that the only way to change Shibuya was through that game and created a fake circumstance so the game could actually be started in the first place.

Neku's entry fee being his memories didn't have anything to do with him being Joshua's pick. It always seemed like Kitaniji (or whichever GM was working under him for any given week) was the one determining and collecting entry fees, so Neku's entry fee was decided the same way any other player's would have been. The way Kitaniji talked about Neku's entry fee at the end of the first week makes it sound like he picked the entry fee himself.

Also, this is just headcanon or a GAYME THEORY or whatever, but I'm pretty sure that Kitaniji assumed that Shiki was Joshua's pick at first since she scored the most points despite having a dipshit partner like Neku, and he took her as the entry fee to ensure that he'd win his game with the Composer. It isn't until week 2 when he learns that Neku is partnered with Joshua that he seems to realize that Neku was the proxy all along.

It makes sense, really. Beat has some serious self-esteem issues and sees himself as nothing but a failure at life. It doesn’t help that his parents help reinforce this feeling by constantly comparing him to Rhyme. So when someone like Rhyme expresses nothing but the utmost faith and selfless love for him, of course he’s going to value that validation that most.

Yeah, I can see what you mean. I always assumed that Kitaniji was just keeping her as an Entry Fee to keep bullshitting an excuse on why he can’t just bring everyone back to life but that’s not a bad way to look at it as well.

Megs doesn't even know Joshua is the Composer though, it was due to Neku's "exceptional growth" that he came to know in Day 6 which is why he sent them off to the math autist with his own Mission because he knew Sho would pull something sneaky.

He was able to recognize Joshua in the end, though. Maybe he hoped for the both of them to take each other out in the fight. Would make things a lot more easier for him.

Just looked through the cutscenes and you're right, it wasn't him being partnered with Joshua. It was just Neku's own excellence that made Kitaniji realize it was him. Point is, he didn't know Neku was the proxy until that point, so he must have been operating under the assumption that it was someone else before then.

Shiki envied Eri and wanted to be just like her, so when she gets the chance to finally be her thanks to the Reaper’s Game, she learns the hard truth that she’ll never be Eri. Knowing she still has her own personality and limitations only drives that point home.
Shiki's appearance was her entry fee-- that is, her most valued possession-- because it allowed her to live in denial and envy, shielded from the truth that she did not want to face. When it came to it, envy was her defining character trait while she was alive, so she lost the thing that defines her.

Well in Week 1 he was trying to get rid of every player through ram-crotch so he had no inkling of who it could be. When 3 players remained in the last day he possibly thought Shiki was the pick due to her growth and change so he had to get her out of the game then and there. And just in case Beat was the pick who willingly joined the Reapers Megs made him kill his friend which would surely destabilize his soul after the fact. He never thought the emo, uncharismatic, anti-social stupid piece of shit would ever be His pick so he let Neku through to another round.

Be all friendly and bubbly and social instead of being a shy loser hikki.

Y'know, we never really learned anything about the backstories of the Reaper lieutenants, did we? They must've been players once, just like all reapers. I wonder what their fighting styles were like before having access to a noise form.

Basically, pic related. Shiki wanted so badly to be like Eri that she even took the chance to act exactly like her but found that inside nothing changed. She was still Shiki no matter what and nothing was going to change that and her whole arc is about her learning coming to come to terms with that and ultimately learn to value herself as a person.

Yeah, Neku really showed off just how much he changed throughout the game with scenes like this. I was seriously impressed with how natural his growth as a person was.

It’s actually implied in the game itself. When he confronts Neku in the end, he says, “Oh, Neku. Don’t you like music?” Not to mention about what happens if you answer his question of “do you like people” with a yes, to which he’ll say something along the lines of how he can’t fathom why Neku would.
There’s also his convo with Neku before that particular moment as well.

All in all, if Shades had talked to Neku at the beginning of the game, their mindset would be nearly identical. All in all, the two of them make perfect foils in one another in terms of ideals and development.

Also they both wear bigass headphones, symbolizing how they cut themselves off from the world and its people, which of course Neku throws away at the end of the game. It's also worth pointing out how they both claim to love Shibuya but hate it's people and all their conflicting viewpoints without realizing that that's what makes Shibuya worth loving in the first place. The parallels between the two of them is one of my favorite parts of the story. I think of it as almost like Kitaniji is who Neku would've grown into if he hadn't clashed and changed during the Game, if he never took his headphones off, so to speak.

The amount of parallels to be found in characters is one of my favorite things about TWEWY. Neku and his partners, the villains, the side characters and how they contribute to the overall theme and message of the game, etc, it all just comes together incredibly well. This is still one of my favorite vidya casts, honestly.

Guys, what went so right with this game? Even to this day I still think this is one of Squeenix’s better games to come out of the merger and a damn fine game in and out of itself.

The devs had a ton of passion for the project and went out of their way to make sure the game took full advantage of the DS hardware to the best effect possible.
