Items got overtuned starting with Brawl and it made them just a series of flashing lights and giant explosions, not tactical tools.

It depends on what your personal focus on the games was. Ultimate's gameplay isn't as engaging as pre-Brawl. You still had hopes with Brawl.

I agree with that first statement. The items in ultimate fucking suck. Way too many of them are one hit kills, whereas in Melee there was only really the hammer that could do that. Playing with items on just feels like a nonsensical clusterfuck.

I love the game, but while I've always enjoyed playing with items half the time, now I can't stand them. I don't know why.

It was 4 that introduced all the "I win" items, Gust Jar, Boss Galaga, Beetle.

Ultimate brought in good stuff like Launch Star and the baseball.

From a competitive standpoint, the physics feel off and the recoveries feel too powerful. I expected to like ledge trumping, but it ends up just making matches drag on. Its not melee even slightly.

From a causal standpoint, the items suck. A lot of them are way too powerful an 1hko you, like the galaga ship or the school bus, shits unfun. The others are boring or have no identity of their own. Seriously, none of the guns or melee weapons they added are fun or too different from each other.

From a single player perspective, WoL is an unfun grind and spirits are a lame reward compared to trophies. No story mode, no adventure mode, no boss rush, no targets, no home run contest, nothing. Single player is the biggest thing that feels botched in this game.

From a presentation perspective, the aesthetic is way to esports inspired, even more bland than smash 4. The sound effects are lame, having to pick your characters over after a match is annoying. Also online is trash.

The game is too much like smash 4 in the non-competitive sense and I've already played my fill of that for a couple of years. The only worthwhile new content was the new characters that they added, but most of them got old and isn't helped by the addition of echo fighters. And as many other anons said in this thread, is that since Smash 4, the items are pretty shit.
