Somebody explain the story of Dark Souls? Just beat it and didn't really get the plot. Who was Gwyn and why was he guarding the flame? And why does your character set themselves on fire after reaching the final bonfire?

Your linking the flame to keep it burning and stop the undead curse I think.
it doesn't matter, the only thing important in games is gameplay
go read a book if you want a real story
Look up some lore videos on youtube. Most of them took notes from /dsg/ anyways.
First Flame - Power source for the gods (Gywn and his buddies)
Gywn has guarding it because he was fueling it with his own soul.
You kill him and fuel it with your soul so it last even longer.
The world was boring in ye olden days, then the Abyss (probably) made the flame, although nobody knows where it came from really. the flame made disparity, and with the power of the flame beings like gwyn, nito the witch got their powers and shaped the world as they saw fit, after some time the fame began to fade, it's power waning, so the witch tried to stop it by making an artificial flame from her soul, that failed and chaos was born. Gwyn saw that the only way to keep the age of fire going was to sacrifice his souls which was pwoerfull to the flame, so he did, which prolonged the age of fire but didn't make it endless, so after 1k years the fire began fading again and you have to stop it
The gods find the first flame
first flame is fading
gwyn burns himself as fuel for the flame, fixes things temporarily
fire is fading again
gwyndolin/frampt invent the "fate of the undead" prophecy, where they tell every undead schmuck they're the chosen one, making it sound like they'll succeed gwyn as the ruler of the gods, in the hopes that one strong enough to burn themselves as fuel for the first flame will eventually come along
>First Flame - Power source for the gods (Gywn and his buddies)
So is it like the Heart of Lorkhan in Morrowind?
>You kill him and fuel it with your soul so it last even longer.
But the world is already in eternal dusk and even the sun is fake. Does the world go back to normal once you link the flame?
Flame is what keeps everything alive, that's why bonfires heal you and why estus carries fire inside it. The "Linking" refers to tying your own life to the flame, as a way to keep it running longer, like adding firewood to a fireplace.
Gwyn made the sun, which grants the world with infinite "life" as in, energy, power.
The only Fromsoft games with somewhat interesting stories are Sekiro and Bloodborne. The rest are just dark fantasy dungeon crawlers with throw away stories.
>But the world is already in eternal dusk and even the sun is fake. Does the world go back to normal once you link the flame?
For a little bit of time I guess but the MC's soul also runs out eventually and then Dark souls 2 happens.
Why didn't Gwyn or the Chosen Undead just add some twigs and newspaper to the fire?
BUT, you as the cursed undead don't know that gwyn feared the humans because their ancestor (pygmy) found the dark souls which was destined to outlast the flame, hence the age of dark, so gwyn put a curse on humans and tricked them into believing that the age of fire is the norm, everytime the age of fire starts to fade the curse acts up and humans cannot die peacefully, so to ''break'' the curse humans endelessly throw themselves at the flame trying to reignite it, those with powerful souls at least
what's the point of perpetuating the flame if the world is a trashcan made only of monsters trying to kill everything in their sight
why not end the world?
This. It's literally retarded.
What's the Age of Darkness supposed to mean lore wise anyway? Just no sun? You kill Gwyn and all his buddies by the end of the game anyway, so they're irrelevant either way.
In Dark Souls is all the world cursed and full of undead and monsters or just the parts were we play? Because if everywhere is like that it doesnt make sense trying to save the world from darkness
>Dark Souls lore
because the trees seem to all be made of plastic in lordran so I don't think they'd burn very well
The summary of the plot is that Gwyn fucked up the natural order of the world by prolonging the age of fire which was coming to a close, he made the curse of the undead to keep humans in line because humans were supposed to inherit the age of dark which is supposed to happen after the age of fire
No. Lordran and Drangleic are parallel worlds, DaS2 is not a direct sequel in terms of timeline. In fact, the parallel world thing is even bullshit to excuse asset and idea reuse.
The longer you are hallowed, the more crazy you go. By the time your fight Gwyn, he's already nutters. The time where his soul was enough to sustain everything is long past. The same thing would happen to you, as implied by DaS3's boss.
It's all a futile cycle where the best you can hope for is to continue the undead curse, and the other option is basically total oblivion (walking out at the end instead of kindling yourself, and basically letting the flame die out).
It's the age of humanity.
Only souls will do as a proper fuel for the first flame.
A certain someone did experiment with alternative fuels for the fire. It ended in lava and demons.
Yes, I know you were joking. I'm not THAT autistic.
DS3 ruin set
Armor of the company of knights who were sent to the Ringed City on an old king's orders.
The knights sought the dark soul, but were so soundly crushed, they had little choice but to swear themselves to the Judicator Giant.
The ill-fated company was later immortalized in a dark fable, inspiring the aspect of certain golems in whom their name lived on.
i think ds2 takes place in the same world only in a different place, you can see drangleic in the gael fight at the end
>fire made of ashes and a sword that gets bigger when you put "humanity" into it
>lol this is obviously just a normal fire, should have gotten raped at boy scouts like me, just add sticks senpai
>The same thing would happen to you, as implied by DaS3's boss.
You get to fight the OG protag in 3? What's that boss called?
OK now somebody explain the story of Dark Souls 2.
I'm glad you have your headcanon, but it actually doesn't matter.
The only boss fight that really makes you feel empty after winning. Not victory, nor defeat, nor lacking in expectation. Simply, a feeling of emptiness.
So at first there was nothing and time itself wasn't even a concept, then the flame came and with it disparity (like Light and Dark) and certain humanoid creatures, the Hollows, found shards of the flame and made them their souls. Four being found four great souls: Nito, Dead Soul; Izalith, Life Soul; Gwyn - Light Soul; Pigmy - Dark Soul. Gwyn used his Soul to create an army and defeated the Everlasting Dragons, founding the Kingdom of Lordran where his peers (the Gods) lived. The Pigmy gave birth to mankind, each human holding a fragment of the Dark Soul.
Gwyn feared the humans and the Dark, since the latter could bring onto the Abyss, a corrupting void that could eat entire kingdoms. Also he knew how strong humans could be, and the deeper the shadow the stronger they would be. Gwyn knew the flame will one day fade, making Darkness stronger, and this meant the Gods would perish under mankind.
To prevent this, the witch of Izalith tried to use her soul to create a new Flame, but the attempt failed and the Demons of Chaos were born. Seeing no other solution, Gwyn cast himself into the fire to feed the flame itself, and prolonging the Age of Light. But for some reason his sacrifice cursed mankind, and Undeads started to appear. An Undead is a human about to go hollow, withering, unable to die, losing fragments of his soul with each passing days, until only the body would remain, wandering aimlessly the land.
Gwyndolin and Frampt decided to guide Undead towards the Fire so that they could link it time and time again like Gwyn did the first time. You play as the first Undead in this chain of sacrifices.
Soul of Cinder is just an even bigger Gwyn
This guy.
I believe he is supposed to be the manifestation of all souls that have previously linked the fire.
>There is no direct connection in the story
okay, this doesn't mean it isn't set in the same world, direct connection to the story would be if we got something like ds3, with recurring characters
darksouls3.wiki.fextralife.com
>uses all the Lord of Cinder's attacks
>Has Gwyn's moveset
>Universe ends if Chosen Undead doesn't kindle, making them a lord of cinder
So no, you don't directly fight the protagonist, but the amalgamation of all the lord of cinder bosses would include the DaS1 protag.
It's not exactly clear since logically speaking without a flame then there would be no darkness as well. It could just be a legend of an age where humans rule the world.
Also Straid of Olaphis mentions the witch of izalith in his dialogue
Dark souls is a real story about overcoming depression and madness through hard work and some help from friends
The fire has been linked many times and countless kingdoms have rose and fell on the land where the Throne of Want, a proxy to get to the Kiln, is located. A nobleman called Vendrick decides to slay the holders of the 4 great souls of his time, and to create a kingdom with his newfound power. He allies himself with the Iron King, the Sunken King and the Ivory King who all inhabit the continent. Vendrick knows that he's destined to link the fire like his predecessor, but he and his brother Aldia prefer to find a solution to the Undead Curse that wasn't temporary, also Vendrick was still too weak to become Cinder. One day Nashandra arrived and the King was horny for her, she told him of how scary the Giants across the sea were and that if he claimed their strength then maybe he could link the flame. So Vendrick waged war on the giants and stole their power. Aldia started to create abominations hoping to find a cure to the undead curse. Vendrick didn't like what his brother was doing so he sought an alternate solution. Along with his pals he created 4 crowns that were meant to keep the Curse at bay, but the other Kings started getting royally fucked by the time the Curse arrived on the land, for example the Iron King became mad and fell into lava, the Ivory King had to sacrifice himself to save his capital and the Sunken King just dieded. So Vendrick had no choice but to link the flame, if he was to save everything. But then he found out that Nashandra was in fact evil, a fragment of the powerful Pigmy known as Manus, the father of the Abyss. She coveted the First Flame so that she could bring an age of eternal darkness, but she needed a powerful vessel to do so as she was very weak, and so she'd been leading Vendrick onto that path. Vendrick couldn't just kill her because he had hopelessly fallen in love with her, so he just said "Fuck it" and went to wither away, erecting a series of protections and trials to access the Throne of Want.
>and then you kill yourself to save the world
Why is this ending trope so common in Japanese media? Just deep seated Bushido like honor and earning for self-sacrifice or something else?
No, he says that "a witch" created pyromancy and fought "the old ones" with her daughters. No mention of Ceaseless Discharge either.
If it's a parallel world, why wouldn't there be a different witch who created a similar type of magic?
gwyn a cute
It's not a parallel world for fuck's sake. It's the same world eons later, probably on a different continent as well.
probably not far off
Great summary, except we have no proof that Manus is Furtive Pygmy.
Interesting that you cropped the title of that article:
You fucking skipped the opening cinematic?
Dark Souls 1 takes place in Italy, Anor Londo is just the Milan cathedral.
user, what are you trying to say?
I'm a teacher, and the teachers that try really hard to be cool for the kids are all unironically like this. They cannot understand why the kids don't like them.
You most be retarded if you think an out of context quote by a journalist negates all the small and big references in all 3 games to eachother
Did you skip every single line of dialogue in the game? Not that there's anything wrong with doing that, but why would you if you want to know the story?
This stuff was basically explained in the opening cutscene.
The only interesting thing Dark Souls 2 did was Aldia and SoTFS lore.
Making Gwyn an asshole that fucked everything up for everyone forever was great.
The same guy who posted the article image replied to himself and then pointed out how the argument is wrong. You're retarded for taking the bait and arguing with a samefag who created a straw man.
The age of Gods, represented by fire, was ending so Gywn used his own soul to artificially prolong it but that ended up causing the undead curse. Linking the flame further prolongs the age of Gods and allowing it to die ushers in the age of humanity, represented by darkness.
TLDR Fuck Gywn, selfish old bastard
>Once, the Lord of Light banished Dark,
>and all that stemmed from humanity.
>And men assumed a fleeting form.
>fleeting form
Is this supposed to imply that during the grey age everyone, and not just the dragons, were immortal?
So when I decided to do the ending where I married that one undead chick and became a leader of those weird fuckers at the end of DS3, I actually saved humanity and brought on the age if man?
>I'm a teacher
Fuck, I'm sorry dude. That really sucks.
>With fire came desparity
>Life and death
The concept of death did not even exist before the First Flame
It implies that during the Age of Fire human mortality was because of Gwyn. Humans are supposed to be immortal without hollowing. After the First Flame died then Humans were supposed to rise up becoming Immortal again without hollowing. However Gwyn instead Linked them to the First Flame creating the Curse and so hollowing was born.
Manus was a Pigmy. There were multiple ones.
I think that "fleeting form" refers to the hollows. A hollow progressively loses his soul and goes crazy, while a human might be mortal his soul still exists in one way or another after death.
Source pls
This is explained in the game if you discover the secrets
You are the chosen one, you will inherit Gwyn's fire... you just have to link that bonfire... go on... do it... he he he he... (Frampt, 2011).
