The meme was real on release but it was patched out.
Value didn't matter on release, so daggers were the best thing to make. Then they changed it so valuable things levelled you up quicker.

Because when the game launched iron daggers were the most efficient way to level. You didn't even need to make 10,000, just like a couple hundred would cap you. They changed it to give xp based on worth or some bullshit later on.
