They dropped modern day almost completely. I haven't played origins or odyssey but there is 0 segments of modern day in unity and syndicate. Unity pissed me off with it just being a random cunt saying "initiate" over a camera.

Desmond died in 3. They used his body for memories after that. But in origins and onwards, that is dropped and now the main character is this Muslim girl. w
She is using her own memories with her own memory read thing she made that the Templars can't. she is a lesbian Mary Sue with an even worse personality than Desmond.

From all those above I've played Black Flag and enjoyed the shit out of it.
Are the other three worth a try? Let's just say that I am aware of the repetitiveness stuff and I can deal with it, but I would require from game:
- interesting setting (time and locations)
- some decent challenge in missions, rather some steamroll

Black Flag is good in spite of the assassin shit. Rogue is similar but the setting is all wrong for sailing around. Unity wastes the setting on the time period and even has the nerve to give you a taste of the medieval times. Syndicate is alright with the Jack the Ripper DLC.

It was always obvious that their original plan was to work towards a finale set entirely in the modern day where you play as Desmond taking down Obstergo. They threw that away in order to make endless sequels. Such a waste.

Haven't played rouge but Unity and Syndicate are definitely good. The two are actually pretty different from each other as well, the combat system of the are wildly different ( you might hate one of them for it though) as well as the atmosphere, and unity continues to have the best graphics in the series.

If you ever played Shadow of Mordor you'd notice it uses the same mocap animation as Assassins Creed, at least for the standstill to running animation
