Video games went to shit after 2008 with normies flooding the market.
this.
CoD and Minecraft killed gaming.
Yeah once it became ultra profitable that's all the industry was about. You'll find a decent game here and there but the flood of great games from the 90's and 2000's will never happen again
2 was better
>Game that invented detective vision
>Kino
We don't deserve echoes, is too fucking good
how and why does anyone think this?
I believe that games being inspired by a "topkino" game will naturally bounce between objectively bad games until everything disastrous gets solid and defined, so it in some future can be avoided. I hope.
Each disastrous game sprouting from a kino inspiration setting an example
It's all been awful lately though.
>Great light/dark world gimmick
>Incredible atmosphere
>Fantastic difficulty
>Best bosses in the entire series
>Focused on originality instead of retreading the same grounds as Super Metroid for the umpteenth time. Good unique slate of upgrades.
>+everything that made Prime 1 so good
And people see that
More unique areas, more oppressive atmosphere, fantastic bosses, Dark Samus is a cool antagonist.
They're both great, but it's easy to see how some people consider Prime 2 better when it does some things better.
>Great light/dark world gimmick
It was a goddamn chore. I love the game but I can also admit to that.
it won't. Prime (and echoes which built off it) was the result of many extremely unlikely scenerios coming together, It's the equivalent of the stars lining up in multiple galaxies
Nah, you just will never be a kid again, thats it
Prime might be my favorite, but you shouldn't write-off kino
kino thread?
these are the words of a person who didn't actually care about video games but instead identified with them and felt like they made him unique in some way
>I'm afraid a game this movie...
you are retarded
>>+everything that made Prime 1 so good
>no missile spam
MP2 would have been 10 times more enjoyable for me if they hadn't removed it. There's a reason I've only beated it 1 time compared to 7+ MP1 reruns.
>lautrec
kinoless
The environment is certainly bad for a game like this, but I do hold out hope that we'll get a new, time enduring game.
The focus has to be on the craft itself, not just the money.
>levels and areas with some actual characters and not mario bros tier ice-fire-grass themes
>world seems more organic and interconnected, no immersion-breakin shift from magmoor to phendrana
>bosses like amorphus, dark samus, quadraxis and ing that are actually fun to fight compared to mp1 where mp1 was the only decent fight
>dark world's atmosphere
>beams that are actually useful compared to power and plasma spam in 1
>mp1 was the only decent fight
omega pirate is cool too
Why do you always say the same fu king shit?! Even going as far as making threqds weekly and at times daily. Only 1 faggot always repeats the same shit and that sounds like you. Just leave, you obviously dont have an interest in games if they "died in 08"
Grounded Ridley is good
How did this invent detective vision?
He's right though. Name me 4 good games that came out after 2008.
Why bother?
It didn't. You shouldn't be surprised that someone comparing the scan visor to detective vision is severely retarded.
kino is one of the dumbest memes to come out of this site
your face is one of the dumbest memes to come out of this site
I actually never played any of the prime games, but my friend had it and it was really cool to watch.
Are there any newer games that get close to this balance of exploration and atmosphere?
I can see why any of the 3 would be anyone's fave. Altough 3 had good moments, the final battle was kinda underwhelming. 2 was great but Torvus Bog was a slog and the limited ammo gets a bit annoying sometimes, not to mention the "key search" at the end feels kinda forced compared to the artifacts.
1 is the best, major focus on gameplay, enviromental storytelling, action and the final battle was the shit.
I don't know about newer, but Unreal is a lot like proto metroid prime.
I would argue the Souls games do it, though the setting and tone are very different. Beyond that I don't think there's much to choose from, these sort of games with a focus on exploration, environmental storytelling and what not have never been too mainstream.
>the final battle was the shit
Thematically as a climax it was pretty great, but it honestly was too easy, even Ridley right before was significantly harder.
I never had the slightest problem with it on hard/hypermode, the second phase particularly is a joke with the ice beam and power bombs, but I will admit I've beat the game more on Trilogy than I did the original so the pointer controls might be skewing my perspective.
Unoriginal and brainlet take. Vidya reached normie status in the early 00s. Some of the best games came after 2008, you just aren't looking for them.
Individual areas were better designed map layout wise than Prime's. Also took ideas for enemy encounters from the original and generally improved them. I do admit the game does have problems, but it was a general upward trend from Prime 1.
>2001
>Baby's first FPS (halo) comes out
>Years later babies are grown up
>Remember Halo? now THAT was a great shooter
>fuck I hate how gaming reached normie status in 2008
Fuck you! your first shooter was already considered normie shit, you grew up on normie shit.
>*blocks ur path*
>Scan & backtrack: the videogame
Any 2D Metroid blow this shit out of the water
>metroid game has backtracking
woooooow bugged game mechanics man
Except it was the original Xbox(360) with it's pc cross platform games and online focused game services. Everyone else copied their shit and here we are.
2D Metroids fucking suck in the current day and age, there's just much better alternatives whereas 3D ones are still unique
what's the better alternative to super metroid
strange journey
uhhhhhhhhhhhhh
Hollow Knight
fpbp
Why has no other game gotten the scanning thing right?
Gaylord Knight wishes to be as good as Super Metroid and it will be forgotten as soon as Metroid 5 comes out
Xenoblade Chronicles 2
Pokemon Black 2/White 2
Zelda BotW
Red Dead Redemption 2
The dark world was awful. It was just a slightly modified light world but you took constant damage.
Everything else was good though.
How do you enjoy mp1 its a game i always wanted to get into and have tried many times but i always just kinda stop playing at some point early on out of boredom. I love metroidvanias too and even 3d ones like dark souls dont bother me. So i just dont know what it is about mp1. I always hear such good stuff about it just how do you stay engaged long enough to have fun with it and get to the cool parts?
>umpteenth time
Prime was the first Metroid game since Super along with Fusion, you retard.
Oh shit, its only been 17 years since metroid 4 (fusion) released. Watch out hollow knight!
Why do people shill these indie games as if they hold a candle to classic games
Same shit happens with A Hat in Time. Not that they're bad games but you're fucking delusional if you think they're better
This makes me sad because of people like you we will most likely never get a metroid game as difficult with a map as complex ever again
Other user is a zoomer who probably didnt even start with metroid 1, 2, or 3. We can use this to infer that he probably prefers metroid 3ds to am2r also. Or hasnt even played am2r to know hed missing out on the superior version of the game.
prime 2's map was much worse than prime's though
like holy shit how can you even think that
It's alright but he only has 4 or 3 attacks and takes an ungodly amount of time on hypermode difficulty
You also have to slog through phase 1 where 90% of the time you're standing around waiting for Ridley to swoop by
Same shit happens to me sometimes when I go back to play through them again.
Prime is a game that you need to dedicate a lot of time to. You kind of have to immerse yourself. Explore at a leisurely pace, taking in all of the environments and reading the scan logs and shit. If you approach it as if you're going through a checklist and "I want to finish this area in an hour", etc. then you're going to get bored.
Dont compare a shit in time to hollow knight. HK is part of a holy trinity along with super metroid and sotn. No other castletroids can even compete.
Super metroid is a classic but hollow knight is just better overall
Better combat, more challenging, less bullshit attack patterns, better platforming, more content
The only thing super metroid has over hk is sequence breaking potential
>running through deep Phazon Mines where there's only ambient sounds without music
>reading the pirates' logs detailing how retarded they are
Nothing comfier in this world. God I love this game.
Literally not making an argument. It was complex and interesting, involved more than the standard ice fire desert worlds, the dark world mechanic made navigation an interesting challenge. The people that complain about it are the same plebs that cant handle the water temple in OoT, plebs and children dumbing down level design for the rest of us
tedious =/= complex
If the transitions were seamless or at least a bit swifter then it would've alleviated the biggest issue with it though, but that's mostly wishful thinking since obviously they had to fit the loading somewhere. Unfortunately that left it with shit like the sunburst puzzle or that one power bomb expansion in Sanctuary Fortress, you know the one.
This isn't the best way to say it, but yeah there was a massive flood of new consumers that entered the market and it did affect how games were designed and marketed.
La Mulana is straight up a better game than all three but can barely be called a metroidvania when I think about it
Looking for the next area to go on your general map feels so fucking linear in this genre now
I loved the logs in prime 2 where it states that some pirates were feeding metroids pet treats and using them for target practice and getting blown the fuck out
>It was complex and interesting
those are just assertions
>involved more than the standard ice fire desert worlds
they may have been archetypal, but they were a hell of a lot more interesting to look at than desert world and swamp world
> the dark world mechanic made navigation an interesting challenge
the dark world was tedious and made navigation even more linear and constrained than it was before. it's a rewarding challenge but it's terrible for exploration, particularly when half the rooms are still missing during the endgame (meaning you have to waste a shitton of time entering and exiting portals to get all the keys)
>The people that complain about it are the same plebs that cant handle the water temple in OoT, plebs and children dumbing down level design for the rest of us
prime 1's level design is excellently designed, and perfectly steers you toward backtracking as it becomes necessary to progression without being overt and condescending. Prime 2 is a 3D version of Fusion, locking you into areas for long stretches of game but then offering you no indication when you need to retreat apart from the bandaid hint system.
>The only thing super metroid has over hk is sequence breaking potential
And movement tech.
I really dislike that in mp 2 I can avoid every single attack enemies dish out but I still take damage from the level. I think that making the enemies more dangerous and hostile along with puttting more environment hazards such as exploding plants would make the the dark world more enjoyable.
And a non-human PC.
>some behemoth monstrosity just fell on me and injected phazon aids to my suit that might inadvertedly put me in danger
>hehe imma strike a pose
I'm actually glad they changed that cutscene. There's a time and place to be cool and that wasn't it.
How did Retro do it? Everything about this game just clicked with me and still remains my favorite game. Also got me into synthesizers and sound design
Magic.
Retro's developers were cut by 75% due to previous failed projects. By the time they got the greenlight to make Prime 1 only the best of the best were left to make the game
they changed it in trilogy?
It was changed before it, Trilogy retained it.
youtube.com
I see, thanks for sharing. MP is my favorite game of all time.
This. The recession happened at the same time so the smaller devs went out of business while the bigger corporate ones could fuck consumers in the ass with DLC while pumping out lowest common denominator trash with no thought or care put into it.
It was only profitable for people who already had a name in the industry. When the 10's hit there was no more "Hit and Run" or "Battle for Bikini Bottom" anymore, just the same old half assed titles
if you dislike metroid prime, one of the best video games ever made, you are objectively a brainlet and have shit taste, this is a fact.
2 is ok.
