Hello user! My team has indicated to me that Atelier Ryza is the start of an Atelier sub-series, so it is a perfectly fine jumping on point. But if you cannot wait until October 29 (Nov 1 for EU folks, sorry!), then Atelier Rorona DX for the PS4/Switch/Steam, Atelier Rorona Plus for Vita, Atelier Ayesha Plus for Vita or Atelier Sophie for PS3/PS4/Vita/Steam are perfectly fine options!

Depends on what you want. The series is built upon slice of life antics, in-depth crafting mechanics via alchemy, and a structure that revolves around time limits to some degree or another. The time limits usually are the make or break factor more than anything else, and there is where it mostly depends on what is a good starting point. If you're not afraid to feel the crunch, start with Rorona and move along the Arland games as those are generally the most popular. If time limits stress you out, start with Sophie and move along the Mysterious series as time limits are heavily de-emphasized/outright removed. If you're wishy-washy either way then start with Ayesha and move along the Dusk series as it marks the transition point between the design philosophies of Arland and Mysterious, at which point you move along based on which games in Dusk you liked the most. Or, you could just wait for Ryza but I don't know where exactly that one stands on the spectrum since it isn't out yet.

At the gameplay level, Atelier is hyper-focused on its intricate crafting mechanics. You head out into gathering fields to get materials for synthesis, and enemies will be present as a hurdle. Combat is turn-based RPG style, but Ryza will be active time battle. Story-wise, most Ateliers are more focused on personal development rather than world-saving heroics.

Go out, collect materials from gathering spots and defeat monsters for their..."materials" as well. Use the materials to craft items at your atelier, then use said items to fulfill item requests or if it's an attack item, use it on more difficult bosses.

Depending on the game the Alchemist characters might be the only ones able to use items, so there's some strategy around that. Some games have time limits requiring you to also have to manage the amount of time crafting, though aside from the re-releases of Arland that came out, they haven't been a thing for the 5 latest games.

If you're interested in time limits then Rorona DX is the starting place for you, followed by Totori and Meruru DX. The "waifushit" depends on how sensitive you are to these things - these are ultimately VERY fluffy narratives despite having a small backdrop of a goal like saving your workshop in Rorona or finding your mother in Totori. You've definitely gotta have a taste for slice of life antics but no, you're not quite walking into something like Omega Labyrinth or Senran Kagura here. And I'd say the games are average-ish in length for a JRPG, though I'm not the best judge of that as length really isn't a deciding factor for me.

Arland is probably the worst offender in game (the ratings meme should be enough of a warning there) but for the most part the Alchemists come off as being cool.
