Spikes littered in that first mission where you "race" the enemy sub-marine; it involves some switch that you're told to hit to slow the sub down.
I genuinely don't want to skip this entry like I did 2 or cheat the final boss like 1 but my god are my expectations with these games constantly crushed.

the switches don't slow the sub down, they lower the water level. And if the sub reaches the switch first it shoots a missile at it, breaking it. If you don't care about your mission score (which you shouldn't if this is a first time playthrough) you can just ignore them.

This user is playing all the games in a row? That's his problem. He should have taken the time to become practiced at the first game. Take time off. Then get practiced with the second game. Then the third game won't feel so bad.
I remember the sub mission he's talking about, but it barely resonates with me, because I remember breezing through it. It's one of the easier levels. Or at least that's what I thought. Trying to do all the games at once it's any way to enjoy them. They're meant to be replayed.

Perhaps you should've started with Deathtanz Mantisk (the green guy). Easiest stage of the first 4, tricky yet possible to get early subtank, easy boss. What more to ask?

The screen crunch can be a bit of a bitch to get used to, but just take your time. The underwater level's mission isn't even strictly about following the sub, and rather press the buttons at the depths.

That stage constantly kicked my shit in with the annoying initial segment with the ship hopping, then the miniboss, then a lengthy chunk of a level, then a fucking escort segment and finally a fucking boss on top of everything. Jesus that stage overstayed its welcome.
