if you're playing it on PC use final burn alpha and put the overclock option up to 200%, game is much better that way

level 4 isn't that hard but the 2nd half can be tricky, key to that level is the tank you get in the middle of the level, use your cannon and grenades and if necessary, jump out of the tank for the i-frames you get while spinning.
btw, 2 is easier than X.
