I finally pushed myself to start getting through my backlog and buying no more games until then, and they're fucking great games just like I thought they'd be. Super fun stuff. If you have all of gaming history to work with and not infinite time then you can have exclusively good games no problem.

Also, collectorism is one factor in backlogs, but so is sheer economic logic. If you are trying to get the most bang for your buck the best way by far is to buy exclusively during big sales and at that point get everything on your wishlist, and never any other time. So it ends up as having a dozen unplayed games and then going through them. The main thing is that if it ends up being so many games that it'll last a good year, then to stop worrying about sales for a while too and remember that modern games will only ever get cheaper.

You can go your whole life thinking about playing a game without actually doing it until you want to. Buying it with the expectation of playing it someday is usually just a failing of control, as you are betting on an uncertain future using only hopeful feelings as your justification. That's the easy path to a backlog of games that you don't actually like and won't actually play. If you don't buy them until you actually want to play them, then you spare yourself the guilt of not playing them as well as the wasted time/energy spent on acquiring them.

No, I talked about playing it user. I've been playing down my backlog, and I've fucking loved every single game so far. Because they're all enjoyable games. Even stuff from fucking forever ago that I've meant to finish forever, like Okami. It merely took some work on myself and changing how I do and think about things. My habits around adding more to my backlog faster then I could clear it weren't based on some rational "oh I don't REALLY want to play those" the whole problem is that it's irrational, a bad habit. Fixing your own bad habits is often a worthy exercise.

Maybe MAYBE there are a few people here who literally compulsively collect fucking everything, even the most worthless shit, just for collection sake. For them though I don't even know if it counts as "backlog" because collection IS the game so to speak. Most of us though are buying games that look good and have been recommended at like 70-95% off so we end up with a bunch. And we then get more on future sales because of the feeling "well what if it I don't get a deal like this again". That's the wrongthink. Of course a deal like that will come again, or better, in the digital age anyway. It's not like the old days of physical media where there was only ever so much supply.

This is a lot of it but I'll again add that sales mess with this. It's totally rational to buy 10x games at 90% off and then play them off over a year rather then buy them each game individually after you finish the previous one at 10x the total price. But it's like using credit, it's literally free money and tons of value IF AND ONLY IF you pay it all off before the turnover date each month. So it's rational upfront but requires discipline to not over extend.

Maybe it applies worse to some of us that are oldfags too, because we developed some habits back when you might see a game on a shelf and it was the only fucking copy you'd ever see in your life.

I was able to finally play SMT Nocturne after owning it for like 12 years. It was great.
I also played Kuyaku Megami Tensei. 1 was terrible, but 2 was amazing.
Recently, i also beat Koudelka and Shadow Hearts 1, which was something I've had on my shelf for 15 years. Working on Shadow Hearts Covenant and it's a FANTASTIC series so far.

If you haven't played Shadow Heart 1, don't play Covenant.
SH1 is a fairly short RPG.
I beat it recently, and it's like 20-25 hours, and can be pretty easy if you abuse the Mind's Eye accessory.

Shadow Hearts Covenant takes place immediately after the "bad" ending of SH1, so you don't even have to do the optional super-bosses to get the canon story experience.

You might also want to play Koudelka, as that is the first of the Shadow Hearts series. It's a short 8-10 hour game on PS1.It's jank as fuck, but has a great horror aesthetic.

I would, but pic related is literally at the top of the list and it was so bad I didn't get past the tutorial fight.
