Nope. It was probably intended to be part of a secret though, like the Pickaxe in Dark Souls 2 where you had to guide a pig from the beginning of the level down to the big room with the spiders before the boss, you would have had to guide the crab somewhere to reveal something hidden.

99% of time overheating is fixed by taking cpu heat sink off, clearing off all the old crusty thermal paste, and reapplying new thermal paste

If you break the second bone ball near the bonfire (by killing the hat wearing skeleton behind the invisible wall and above), the ball will break revealing a single crab. The crab is the only enemy in the game that has infinite follow distance. Most enemies will return back to their starting location if you run too far away from it. The only limit is that it can't pass through boss rooms, so he can't exit through the abyss watchers into the swamp or go past the graveyard boss into Anor Londo. IIRC the crab also does not take fall damage. You can use this fact to drop him down under the breakable ladder and get him into the area with the sand worm and the giant crossbow. You can take him all over the area but it doesn't seem he can actually interact with anything.

We may never know exactly why the crab is there but I'd bet it's lack of tether has to do with the way it's spawned.
