9/11 was a tragedy, but it didn't kill the culture. In fact, in my opinion, it may have CONTINUED the culture.
Part of the reason why 2001-2005 felt more like the late 90s rather than having a distinct culture of their own may have been because 9/11 got people to want to stick with the familiar.
The descent into Shitworld began in 2006, but I believe the financial crisis had a lot to do with the reason things got as bad as they got now. Major content creators wanted to stick to what they thought was safe with the consumers, so they did.
Obviously, smartphones and social media also fucked shit up.

Because theres 1000000 different ways to advertise to kids now so there's no reason to put effort into tv commercials.
Until the mid 00's tv commercials on kid networks were pretty much the ONLY way to advertise directly to kids so they put heart and soul into it.

All of my friends back then played Gameboy Color, PS1, and Gamecube games, while I had a GBA/PS2/DS. I borrowed a lot of old-school games from them, most of them were in black and white. Simpsons episodes started feeling the same as today's episodes around 1998-99, when Mike Scully's reign was in full force. Ever since then the show felt more like a "Family Guy Lite" with easy, fratboy humor, unlike s1-8 which were more cerebral.
