Never read any manga, and like I said I only watched the original show from the early 90s.
Anyway, my biggest gripe with the show is that essentially, none of the girls ever got better at fighting at all. Even at the end they are getting saved by ass-pulls and barely hanging on by the skin of their teeth. Ultimately, I think it's because it's a show aimed at girls, and while there is fighting, it's not really the main theme of the show. It's more about friendship and mystery and romance. It is what it is, and it's not a bad show, but personally I thought it was really unsatisfying.

The poor fighting scenes really held the series back. Not gonna lie I've been tempted to skip the monster of the week portions sometimes. not really. sailor moon's a classic for good reason but if you want a magical girl equivalent to rider/sentai you might be better off checking out Pretty Cure. It follows the same structure of a new season every year, and the magical girl sections are (usually) far more focused on fighting instead of just further antics before the stock footage finisher is used.

The guardian outfits are essentially leotards. There's actually a fair number of panty/upskirt shots in the show. More than you'd expect maybe for a show aimed at tween/teenage girls. I think the producers/director knew that they needed to lander a bit to the male demographic in order to succeed. There are plenty of times we should have been able to see up their skirts but they were held down by magical gravity, and other times where a panty shot was included ever so briefly.
Obviously I'm not complaining, but plenty of other shows avoid any revealing shots entirely. It was obviously a decision by various people to include them.

I don't know how other people watch anime but I've found the best way to avoid burnout and work through a backlog consistently is to do one episode in the morning and one at night (actually typing this during an OP for what I'm watching right now) and even if it takes a few months to get through all of Sailor Moon, for example, it's a thousand times better than blasting through the first ten episodes and then never touching it again.

In Japanese the planets are all referred to "element star" and which lines up with the five Chinese elements. With water being Mercury, metal being Venus, fire being Mars, and wood being Jupiter. I legitimately disagree with this though. Sailor Moon is genuinely one of the 'deepest' animes there is in terms of it's writing, direction and characterization and how it handles its themes, and I could analyze it all day in the same way you might with something like Utena.

It just doesn't go out of its way to *seem* deep, and so the kinds of people who look for *signs* of deepness and that sort of pretension won't see what's there because they are more concerned with judging things in terms of what they assume they 'should' like. Like I said before, you're not wrong to compare it to Doom, in that it's something that people with good sense will appreciate naturally, but which the kinds of critics who laud the intelligence of the latest story driven RPG with a political agenda for that reason will see past.

Sailor Moon S is a 9/10 anime arc

Jupiter is the chief hipster's choice. People like her because of what she seems to be and not for what she actually is. People naturally love the idea of a strong motherly waifu who really just wants tender love, but ignore that she only gets a couple of episodes at best that actually delve into her as a character and is otherwise the shallowest member of the main cast by a heap, with most of her focus episodes being random shit that happens where she could practically be omitted or replaced with someone else.

I really, really wish this wasn't the case. She's a fantastic *idea* for a character, but the series completely drops the idea of her having a delinquent past or that her sempai will ever figure in anything practically as soon as she's introduced. Not even any of the side productions give her much more depth.

Viz dub of the original started to coming out around the same time Crystal started. They've made it thru Super S at this point (4th season) and just have Stars to go.

Its a solid mix of what made the original anime so charming while having more of the legitimacy of the japanese.

I mean this is basically all of the inner guardians for the most part and I'd say Sailor Venus gets it even worse than Jupiter was. They have a lot of focus in S1 but by later seasons they are almost completely ignored in favor of chibi moon or the guardians.

Venus was virtually the real leader of the guardians and was about struggling with having maturity and her freedom taken away because of it. But then just turned into a stereotypical dumb blonde after S1.

At least Mako was shown more to be than just a delinquent in S1 and they continued to play with those other traits where they could later on. Maternal, domestic, a strong fighter, and completely boy obsessed.

They probably had to make the Mars symbol heart shaped to avoid making people interpret that Rei was a MtF transvestite. lol

Actually decrease in my experience. None of the dojins get their characters right, and so you feel like you're fapping to poorly written facsimiles of people you think of as friends.

I don't think Mako was ever supposed to be a delinquent, it was more a rumour of why she moved to Usagi's school, and people just assuming that she was because she was very tall and very strong. When the true reason was she was heartbroken from her senpai and wanted to move to a different school.

that really is the part that hurts me most about this show. that guy who said he started last november and is up to season 4? i started last august and i'm sitting on maybe the third-last episode of R. i really don't like the idea of going on as it was only at its best in the original season.

with every new character, there's less room to develop the ones i actually know and love. every episode has to have every character in it at all times. every fight has to involve every character. every scene has to include everyone. side characters are pushed away to make room for the mains, who, since they are all visible at all times, don't get any chance to shine or develop individually, and will never be excluded from an episode because of the risk of making someone sad that their favourite girl isn't in a single episode for a week. the characters are all devalued by every episode that they're used without having any actual role or use.

really just take me back to the first five-or-so episodes of season 1 to be honest, where you had moon and makyu doing their own thing and learning the ropes with the low-stakes fun plots of the early dark kingdom.

i'm enjoying reading sailor V right now because it's such a narrow set of characters and it gives you time to soak it up and enjoy what's on offer, and it even manages to include hikaru towards the end, but then i'm at one of the last chapters; new beginnings part 2, and it's all gonna be over soon.

I'm and I watched it all in about three and a half months. Never really felt any burnout, if anything I was upset when it was over and I didn't have more to go through. though I got into precure earlier this year and while it's not the same it does scratch that itch at least.

No, I can't agree. She does get bowdlerized by the anime personality wise after her intro, but even the personality that remains is more than unique enough to carry her as a character; and she has an entire manga of her own to boot, along with her role as Moon's body-double, her taking up the sword and killing Beryl in the manga etc. along with being the bi-polar psycho-sex crazed character she becomes.

That's just it. As in, that really is it. That's all there is to her character. She has few iconic scenes outside of the "rainy day man" episode and maybe the manga mentioning her parents deaths, whereas this isn't the case at all for the rest of the cast, who each get their own various character driven subplots across different adaptations. Jupiter basically is the girl who brings up her old flame whenever she sees a guy, and that's mostly it.

I actually had to stop watching Super-S half way through because the least amount of plot story stuff happens in that season.

If you look at the beginning of the attack animation she raises her hand in the air to gather energy. The attack animation may also represent something falling from the sky like a meteor.

But it has the best MotW sideplots in the whole show hands down, which again, nobody ever talks about. You have a literal circus act of pickup artists who sexually harass women as you main baddies, which is weak plot wise, but works way better from the perspective of episode shenanigans than any of the other villains.

I think I ended up dropping it when the original trio are gone and get replaced with the quartet, and then after 2 episodes I had to take a break. I managed to binge watch everything up until then on my first watch of the show.
