The biggest problem in DQVI is the party members don't get enough development. The characters themselves are fine. Bu aside from Milly and Barbara, you don't really get much of an arc with anyone. And the Hero loses everything at the end.

I don't know man, Hassan has a nice arc from the point to meet him to the point you defeat Murdaw. After that he's just in it cause he's your bro, which is fine by me. Plus Terry's story is intertwined with Milly's, so it's really just Chamaro who got the short end of the stick. I will say there's plenty of points where they don't explain things as well as they should, though. I didn't really understand the entirety of Milly/Terry's stories until I played the game a third time (I might just be dense though).

Terry is gone 3/4 the game and really only gets story with the end of Milly's story like you said. Since Milly gets basically two small story arcs, and Terry is really only there to clean up her second arc, it's kind of bad for Terry.

Hassan has only one thing. Finding his parents. He does that with a really underwhelming result.

Barbara gets two full story arcs and is the main focus of the games ending. So that's better than most.

Chamaro is literally only there to escort you to town to get the boat. He doesn't even have a character. This is really bad for a Dragon Quest game. He's more useless than Yuffie in FFVII despite having essentially the same role. Why didn't they give him something in the DS remake? At least a post game story or a side quest or something.

Hero loses both his sister and Barbara in a really bad bitterswet ending. Only time I've been annoyed with a Dragon Quest story, honestly.

Basically, half the cast needed more development. And even Milly and Barbara, who get the most development, could have gotten more. Not trying to knock anyone who liked the game. I liked the game too. Just think they could have done so much more with the characters in the DS remake.

I'll stick to my guns and say Terry's story/character is fine, it's just a large part of it happens before he joins your party. The build up of showing him off as an excellent swordsman and lone wolf, followed by his involvement with Milly is done well enough for my tastes.

Hassan's thing isn't just his parents, but also his real life job as a carpenter contrasted with his dream to be a martial artist. I'd say the payoff is less him reuniting with his parents and more when he touches the statue of himself and realizes who he is, and learning knuckle sandwich/spirit punch in the process. That's the payoff for the player at least, the parents part is just tying up loose ends.

Won't defend Chamaro's situation, I've already expressed my disappointment there.

Hero's story is bittersweet, but I like that for a change. Ashlynn fading away, followed by the music swell as the camera focuses on the Zenithian castle, I don't know, I really liked how that played out despite how unfortunate it was. I also never interpreted Ashlynn as having a crush on the hero, which might have helped me not feel too shitty about the whole thing. I always thought a relationship between her and Hassan would make more sense anyways.

Not knocking your perspective of course, just offering my own. I'd be more than satisfied if the remake had just gave Chamoro some more purpose (and maybe ditched the romance w/ Ash & the hero).

His sister isn't real to begin with. She's just part of the dream world. Barbara is real because she's part of a magical family that lives in the dream world. But she gets stuck in the dream world at the end. There's no hints that the Hero likes Barbara, but there's plenty of hints she likes him.

It's a (heavy spoiler for DQIII)prequel to DQ1 & 2 so having those previous journeys come full circle was very satisfying. I went into DQIII completely blind so this was a very pleasant surprise. I also decided to do a no class changing playthrough on my first run and beat the game with the basic Hero, wizard, priest, and fighter party. It made the final boss challenging and I didn't know whether I would win or not so I got really emotionally invested in my characters whenever they fell in battle or took a really big hit. In the end I did beat the final boss while gimped, so it became a very memorable moment for me.

Was Jessica even popular in Japan? I mean, she got porn. But it always seemed like she took second fiddle to the usual favorites like Bianca, Alena, Maribel, etc. Plus she didn't get more story in the remake. And her lack of a character arc is literally the only flaw in DQVIII.

Also, ever notice how 99% of her art has her smiling and happy. But in game, she's always angry or slightly annoyed. Perhaps it's the fanart people prefer. And not her in game personality.

To be fair, she's mourning during the entire game, and has a few times were she's happy such as when something good happens to other people showing she's good at heart, she's also a fire-head in appearance and personality, and all her cameos and/or inclusions on later games depict her as a somewhat devilish tomboy with a short temper, like she was designed to be, so it's not that far from how she probably is after returning to normal aka post-game.

Yeah one part is the porn because she's definitely designed around it with the "sexy" skills and such, the other reason is because people tend to ship her with Angelo because of the "casanova trying to court the hot big-boobed short-tempered girl" cliche, plus the aesthetic-pleasing pairing, similar to various pairings out there. Though I never understood the appeal of it, since she's not even in the "tsundere" category and the only time she wasn't cold to him was when he saved Marcello because she could relate to having lost a family member, nothing else, and she made it very clear during the entire game that she hated his casanova type. Hell because of her own thirst for revenge she was barely on good terms with the Hero and Yangus. Same reason Jessicafags cling to the 3DS out-of-nowhere route I guess.

I understand all that. But the issue is her story arc pretty much ends after Dhoulmagus is defeated. She herself even says "I've wanted revenge for so long that I don't know what to do now." So she just continues to tag along with you. But why? The job is supposedly done. If they had given her more development with the Hero before this, either as a growing friendship or a mild infatuation, then it would make sense why she'd stick around.

I played the PS1 version instead of the 3DS version because I didn't want to miss out on like 30 hours of cut content. Was very enjoyable for all 123 hours of playtime I had, and is my third favorite DQ.

You'd probably be fine playing either version, but idk, my friend played the 3DS version and was warning me the game was shit before I had played it. He doesn't understand how I liked it so much, and I don't understand how he hated it so much. Maybe 3DS version did something really wrong or maybe he just wouldn't have liked the game regardless of version.
