your hdd might be dying

Usb dvd drives cost like a tenner bro.
But yeah optical media is irrelevant for PCs nowadays.

get a SATA one then?

Also it seems to me that cooling the HDD makes a difference- I had trouble with my 2TB seagate, but then i installed a fan on it and it runs fine at 37C(used to go to 60+ before)

i just plugged in an older hard drive for the sole purpose of downloading a 60gb game, and that is all that i hear, kill me.

abort retry fail?

Why would anyone use HDD today? At least for gaming. SSDs are super cheap.

Is that what was in those VHS things?

Or you could just go into power options and prevent HDD power down/sleep

Set time to 0.

Good feel, I miss this as well.

Most older games still play decently on HDDs, the only games that an SSD is really necessary are those with multiple loading screens or those bloated 60gb+ games.

Is this bad for HDD? Will it shorten the lifespan?

At least I saved my old Yea Forums files that prove I'm a newfag before it died.

Attached: 1398465879502.jpg (500x500, 27K)

I'll try that, but why would it help? Just looking at the task manager, there seems to be some near constant hard drive activity even when the computer's idle. Why is it going to sleep?

Attached: I'll just warn you now. I don't know how to use a computer..jpg (640x480, 55K)

honest answer user
i dont know

It's probably full of bees.

constant power downs and ups are worse.
Letting it spin isn't bad, since the head is in park mode when not seeking or writing.

>but why would it help?
Because Windows randomly defrag, or if it wants a file from one of your HDD when powered down will have to wait until drives are spinning again to seek after the file it wanted.

Set the power setting to Ultimate Performance and it should be set to 0 by default.
Or use High Performance if that doesn't exist.

Attached: 2019-08-08_19-52-05.png (7680x4320, 538K)

I had something like that before I think. It's been a while since I had this sound, but it used to go away when I slapped the side of the case.

so I get this "click" "clack" noises from the hdd
and I did a test and found out I have 1 pending sector count what ever the fuck that means
im going to backup my shit anyway but is my hdd done for?

cringe
soulless

It means it's scheduled for black listing that sector.

Imagine if a monitor got a stuck pixel and it then schedules it to turn off instead of being lit in a random color.
That's what's going to happen to your HDD.
You'll lose a sector from your HDD, so you'll lose 4KiB worth of data for every sector that it deemed bad.

oh
gonna backup anyway

This is as good a thread as any to ask this. I pretty much exclusively play modded Skyrim VR and have hundreds of mods installed. This has caused my fps to drop significantly. I have a GeForce RTX 1070. Would upgrading to the RTX 2080 TI make enough of a difference to make my modded Skyrim VR run smoothly? My CPU is i7-8700, if that matters.

Attached: Computard.jpg (640x480, 55K)

If you're willing to pay the $1100+ for a 2080 Ti, I guess so. The high end NVidia cards have become "money is no object" items these days.

>soulless state drive

Attached: 1454002053847.gif (500x556, 149K)

Skyrim engine is simply not optimized for this.
Fast ram, SSD, Overclocking cpu, and heavy ini tweaking might help. Default HIDDEN INI settings are not suitable for large amount of mods.
I think your videocard is already fine, unless you play in 4k VR.

>posts a GIF file
>it doesn't move

Attached: 1561469992020.jpg (680x671, 56K)

No. An RTX 2070 is overkill, even for VR. Blame it on the shit engine and the hundreds of mods you have loaded.

That's a gf, not a gif.

>tfw my linux distro sends me mail if i get a SMART error
pretty useful

>SSD
Well, I have Samsung 970 EVO 2TB SSD. I have Steam and all of my games installed on it. It is not the SSD that I have my OS installed on though. My OS is on a separate, 250gb SSD, if that matters at all.

>if that matters at all.
The less space taken on SSD the faster read rate is.

youtube.com/watch?v=gsNaR6FRuO0

boomers get in here

I've used about 400gb of the samsung SSD and have about 1400gb of free space.

I love how some games made my CD drive sound like it was chewing the disk. Jesus. There has never been a happier day then when full installs become the norm because HDDs got large enough to enable them. Fuck playing old FMV adventures and having to swap multiple CDs on the regular.

It keeps your HDD powered on. Some disks have additional power saving options like APM which you can disable with smartctl or sometimes the software that comes with higher end ones.

sometimes Yea Forums is genuinely funny, lol.
