I think there is not a single game which influences are being folllowed directly, is more like reactions to society to such games, IE. the rating system after mortal kombat, or (arguibly) mass shottings blamed on FPS. But there isn't a game wich "teachings" are being followed, studied or even considered as philosophy

Half-Life 2. I know the zoomers on this board have no fucking clue what I'm talking about but basically half-life was the first game to have the vidya equivalent to "cinematography". Scripted events sequenced to show the player something interesting, like the famous pick up the can scene, but a lot of other small stuff too. Each new mechanic and enemy is showed to the player in subtle sort of world building way which set the bedrock upon which games like Halo and Call of duty would build on. Before the original HL games were just corridor shooters. Not bad, just different. HL2 was a mediocre (not bad) shooter with a shit ton of scripted sequences used in moderation to create a world that makes the player think about what they're looking at. Its why we have "the sad dad forumula" today. Games like nu-GoW and the last of us are the modern evolution of that thread. The way that zoomers would have you think, is that this is the ONLY way to make a game. Now scripted sequences are the core experience of the game, not just sprinkled around to enhance an already stimulating experience. Now the concept of an arcade-type game that just has solid mechanics with a fun theme is seen as archaic and simple. Movie games came from HL2, and movie games are the dominant force in media, if you dont count sport games.

At most it has shaped aesthetics on other videogames, and if you even want to push it forward aesthetics in media. No thoughts from half life 2 are being analized, or it's mechanics being now followed by everyone as a gospel for doing daily chores, probaboly not even by few people. As I said before videogames have not shaped society as literature ever did, hell probably not even films have done that beyond a little propaganda.

A very different story emerges from the gaming industry where, for more than twenty years, computer games have continued to attract millions of players, and have even entered classrooms and planning practices. Not only do these games look increasingly realistic but the behaviour of the characters within them has grown ever closer to resembling actual behaviour, to the extent that some commentators have even started to propose that planners should turn into gamers. Does this make sense, or is it still a bridge too far? In the search for an answer, this paper will critically analyse two computer games: SimCity, which is a classic strategy game, and Second Life, an increasingly popular social virtual world. I will make a number of suggestions as to how these games could be upgraded into planning simulation models.
