Are these actually good games,or is it another case of nostalgia clouding judgement of a sub par series?
Baldur's Gate Thread
They're shit. RTwP is shit. Everything is shit. Why did you even make this thread?
they're complete okay
Why are you so angry m8?
Just started the first. It’s pretty fun, looking forward to leveling up some more to unlock more spells for my sorc. Work is what you’d expect from Dungeons and Dragons, you’re either into it or you’re not. Early game feels like an rng meat grinder though.
They are at least better than the dullest rpg of all time. Each attempt Obsidian makes to create their own universe rather than simply deconstruct a setting made by others, has been more disastrous than the last. Aside from the outdated gameplay and lifeless cities, Pillars of Eternity's only consistency has been its lack of excitement and ineffective use of combat mechanics, all to make magic unmagical, to make action seem inert.
Perhaps the die was cast when Sawyer vetoed the idea of making anything at all innovative or original; he made sure the game would never be mistaken for a work of art that meant anything to anybody, just ridiculously profitable nostalgia pandering to ageing Baldur's Gate fans. Pillars of Eternity might be anti-casual(or not), but it’s certainly the anti-Divinity series in its refusal of spontaneity, fun and excitement.
>a-at least the writing was good though
"No!"
The writing is dreadful; the narrative was terrible. As I played, I noticed that every time I engaged in dialogue with an NPC the game presented me with a Wiki-page style infodump instead of anything resembling actual human conversation.
I began marking on the back of an envelope every time this was repeated. I stopped only after I had marked the envelope several dozen times. I was incredulous. Sawyer's mind is so governed by obsession with pointless minutiae of the lore that he has no other style of writing.
Later I read a lavish, loving review of Pillars of Eternity by the same David Gaider. He wrote something to the effect of, "If these kiddies are playing Obsidian games at 17 or 18, then when they get older they will go on to enjoy Dragon Age II." And he was quite right. He was not being ironic. When you play "Pillars of Eternity" you are, in fact, trained to shill for Bioware.
>obsidian
wrong developer user
They're fun. Least, I think so.
i dont really like them
How do you have a sorcerer in BG1?
>Kingmaker is longer than the entire BG saga
>actually fight a god by the end instead of some wannabe roastie
Dark Alliance is one of the only nonsports games I like. Any ps4 recs?
Tutu, Enhanced, welcome to more than a decade ago, user.
yeah that's kind of strange, what do they get that mages don't?
What your opinion on Harry Potter user?
This thread already sucks dick, but I guess a bad BG thread is better than no BG thread.
Currently rolling a F/M, a Blade, and a Sorc.
I went to Durlag's early and got that Scim +2, and I'm about to go grab the Chain+1 from the area East of Nashkell Mines, but Blade seems really underwhelming. I guess levelling up fast is cool, but my THAC0 is shit and no helmets seems like a really huge handicap.
>Just found that blackmail quest for the first time
I can't believe I'd never explored the Three Kegs before.
EE.
I think probably the only games anything like Dark Alliance on PS4 are Diablo and Path of Exile.
They learn spells the way Priests do -- innately.
>what do they get that mages don't?
Have you never played a crpg ever before, faggot?
Do you think the BG series would be more popular today if the PSX port had indeed ever happened?
youtube.com
Possibly. I know I only discovered Diablo because it was on PSX.
...That conversion looks super awful though.
It's nowhere near what the final version would have been like, though. probably
It's really sad entertaining the thought that we could already have had BG3 by the actual devs before the pozzing of Bioware though.
It hurts too much so I'll just stop thinking about it.
What are Beamdog's crimes again?
It's ok, Larian will pozz it for you now
Don't remind me.
Only Owlcat could have saved BG3 from the pozzing.
BG died, ME died, Dragon Age, Fallout died. Elder Scrolls is dying, if you thought it was alive after Morrowind. Feels fucking bad man.
They changed the cinematic artwork for no fucking reason, and all of them are worse.
>using spider's bane
You I like you!
>enhanced edition
garbage
I have no idea how you can tell from that screenshot, unless you assume the Free Action icon on the Cleric is from Spider's Bane.
It's actually equipped on Shar-Teel, but she's currently swapped to the LBoM.
Most likely because the only other piece of gear in BG to give it is the ring you find in the Iron Throne.
>Watching a couple playthroughs of guys using SCS, because I still can't
>It gives literally every Mage, even in BG1, pre-buffed Stoneskin
>>>>>>>>>Fair
Seems kinda gay 2bh.
And the one you can lift off of Dushai.
I know I'm going to regret asking, but, "pozz"?
They are great, first time I played them were 5 years ago
SCS lets you select which prebuffing option you want, or none at all.
Ideally you'd pick "casters only buff with long duration spells" so you won't get mages immediately appearing with literally every single 1 round/level buff in their spellbook, barring contingencies/triggers.
Stoneskin lasts for hours so pretty much any non braindead mage would come with it naturally, nevermind being one of the most important mage defenses.
And yeah, enjoy the likes of Silke in BG1 coming prebuffed with Stoneskin to be fair it's actually viable since when you think about it, she still has to dodge a ton of attacks from potentially 6 party members and when a caster's stoneskin is gone in BG1 they just explode due to no PFMW
too bad for you she also has a minor sequencer with Invis + Mirror Image that she will use immediately upon low health and no stoneskin, learn to enjoy hose 10d6 bouncing lightning bolts at level 1 Beregost
How does that work?
>>Hé, c'est moi Imoen...
youtube.com
My point was that the player, AFAIK, has no way to get Stoneskin themselves, or Breach. So as far as being "fair" goes, it's kind of bullshit.
They're great unless you're a weeb in which case go back to Xenoblade fagot
>Select Imoen
>'Heh, yer a queer-'
>Initiate action
>Select Shar-Teel
>'Men are-'
>Initiate action
>'Okay.'
So I get Imoen calling me a queer and the raging misandrist telling men are okay dozens times a play session.
Wands of Fire are basically one of the most absurdly overpowered items in BG1, barring Arrows of Detonation.
The wand has 2 abilities, one is fireball and the other a more powerful version of Scorcher which is what you see on webm.
Basically it shoots a collum of flame hitting everything in its path for 2 rounds, dealing 6d6+6 damage each, aka 12d6+12 damage which is insane in BG1.
Since the collum is connected to you and the first initial target, you can "increase" its size by just kiting around and so burn everything to death, including party members not protected vs fire.
You also get Stoneskin scroll on the EE from one of the mages in the Ice Island.
Breach is only on Siege of Dragonspear
soulless
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>EE
Well, at least now I can give myself one guilt free in BGT.
Though maybe I won't since I'm not playing SCS.
Went through both games + Tales of the Sword Coast and Throne of Bhaal and just the other day in my CRPG marathon. They are overrated compared to what else was available at the time I think. I don't see how Baldur's Gate 2 can be hailed as the/one of the best RPGs of all time when put next to something like Fallout or Arcanum. I'll probably make a bait thread about this when I'm done with Fallout 2.
If you like the genre they're pretty good
There is unironically zero reason not to at least pirate EE if you are that annoyed at Beamdog in current year.
Unless you want to play BG1 with its original engine, that is, but if that was the case you wouldn't use Tutu or the likes as well.
>or Arcanum
I tried so hard to get into that game, but guns are just so retardedly underpowered/magic is so overpowered, that I just kind of lost interest. I really want to pick it back up though.
How does the exploration pan out in the long run? Are there lots of secret areas to find on the map the way the tool-tips hint?
My toaster literally can't run EE. Even just the Aec'Letec fight on BGT ran at a cinematic 5fps.
Well fuck user, that's harsh.
Though from what I recall EE did have some problem with integrated Intel cards
>arcanum
are the games any good though?
Baldur's Gate 2 is much better than 1
Incorrect.
>That pic
That's Avernum. Totally different. It's an excellent series, though.
Ok but why what makes the 2nd better?
>How does the exploration pan out in the long run?
It's no Fallout, let alone Fallout 2. But, yes there are more than a few unmarked areas for you to stumble on. Some of these locations are tied to you getting a specific quest before hand in order for them to show up on the map though, but it's not a big deal.
>that framerate
That's a different game, you retard, and there's only one Arcanum.
I played the BG 1 for the first time about 2 years ago and put 100 hours into it before I got bored and dropped it. I didn't finish it
Better ruleset, better writing, pretty much better everything.
>100 hours
How far did you get?
You can't make a werewolf girl fall in love with you, though.
>werewolf
in the original baldur's gate? I don't remember seeing any party members that could transform into anything
playing BG after Planescape Torment feels weird as fuck. I miss my old crew of Morte and Dakkon and I keep imagining what The Nameless One would do in Charname's shoes.
Nah, it was part of the Isle of Balduran sidequest from Tales of the Sword Coast.
I'm really hoping the new switch ports won't become super rare like the boxed set of NWNs & Torment were some years after release
>mfw the main theme kicks in
