Never played Freelancer, so I'll think I'll pick this up and give it a chance.
Nothing wrong with roguelite's: the tension of getting far, but losing everything you've gained in a run makes for some tense moments.
Having actually something to lose is a very good good ( and addictive, for me at least) game mechanic.

Its a fun and comfy time sink. I recommend grabbing it when it goes on sale.

The first one was about capital ship combat on a 2D plane whereas the new one is about dogfighting in fighters and is full 3D, so know what you're getting into.
