The meme comes from the fact that when doomguy uses items they always have priority over anything else, meani g he always uses the item before anything else. It makes him useful for healing and such, because of this people often will have him act as a "vending machine" and mostly just abuse the item priority during boss battles.
Some call him weak ingame but I honestly disagree. In SJ equipment matters much more then raw stats, if you have good equipment on him he's monster.

Status ailments can completely destroy your party and if your MC gets hit with one most parties are fucked unless you use demon source to get a status heal

I don't know about Redux, but in the original, every single one of its attacks effects your entire party, one of them generally does enough damage to oneshot at least 1-2 members of your party and another affects your party with random status effects. Not to mention your damage output isn't that high at that point

The only games in main SMT I've played are SJ and SMT1, and honestly I remember SMT1 being a bit easier (and mind you I played before they patched the guns back into the AGTP translation). Breaking the game with Zio spam was fun. Save states probably had something to do with it. SJ feels more balanced, but not balanced enough. It sits at like a perfect middle ground between "actual good enemy design" and "no playtesting whatsoever." Almost every boss feels like you need an overly specialized party to take it down, and half the reason for that is that skill inheritance is just complete shit in the game. I mean, it usually is in most SMT games, but with SJ, you don't even have the decency of having completely unbalanced skills that can wreck the game to compensate for it

Strange Journey has a few difficulty spikes but in particular it's just a meme that surrounds the series. The series is only a little harder then most jrpgs, though for those unfamilar with it they will find it hard as it has a bit of a curve. Take Matador for instance, he was so memorable for people new to the series as buffs and debuffs in jrpgs were probably worthless in their mind. If you go in knowing about him he's not too bad though. After you play one megaten the rest should be fine.
IV is just broken, you can abuse the apps so easily that the game loses any challenge after Medusa.
It's really not that bad, takes like twenty min at worst.
