I'm extremely confused at how these games go because I only play the Q/Q2 games (which I'm told are canon but completely ineffectual to the main games because of the mem-wipe, apart from the butterfly, who is supposed to be the thing that rides across all timelines and events to connect them?) I have no desire to play the main games but damn I thought I had a vague idea at least of what they were about.

Because I enjoy Etrian Odyssey immensely and I got the first one as a gift. Just in the first area of the second one, the first one I beat a long time ago, genuinely one of the easiest games I've ever beaten but it's still got some good maps and the Evil Spirit Club was great.

Well that make sense, the games themselves are old school classic JRPG style. You level up and such, but can also get demons called Persona's, you can fuse them to make more powerful demons, gods and angels you use in battle and pass skills and power on to each other. One half of the game in JRPG dungeon crawling well the other half is you live a normal life do things you would do day by day and hang out with friends and girls to raise you Social links that let you fuse even more and better demons. You can date girls in the games too.

I know those aspects at the very least and it's not my first foray into MegaTen, I was more meaning that the butterfly being the sole connection was confusing.
From what I can read, the butterfly is basically what makes even the games that are utterly ineffectual to the main ones but still considered "canon" by Atlus connected officially, because the butterfly is always the same character just fucking around. I'm sure it's just generic Atlus multiverse fuckery but damn I didn't realize the butterfly was so important.

Butterfly is Philemon, a higher god in a continual dual/bet over humanity with an eldritch god named Nyarlathotep. He helped guide the main characters in the first two Personas but is basically just a continuity nod in the later games.
