You arent alone. I like it too, specifically the 2d games. I wish they would push more of those out. Zero mission feels weird to me, its not like fusion, super, or AM2R. It feels like I'm rushing through it with its pacing, whereas the others feel slower paced.
I never owned or played the primes yet.

That was where Other M failed, by trying to make everything social and making Samus talkative and having other people. Isolation is the series' biggest strength, and you can't just toss it into the dumpster all willy nilly. You also can't railroad the player in linear corridors or dialogue dumps.
It just doesn't work. It didn't even work in the original games like Zero Mission and Fusion. Whenever I played them, I was praying to get to the part where I felt like I wasn't having my hand held.

The merits of zelda gameplay mechanics and anything videogamey gets pushed to the side because people are too busy obsessing over Zelda, or any of the waifus in question. I just think it's an unhealthy obsession, and it overtakes all discussion. Have you ever tried discussing Twilight Princess without someone emptying their shortstack Midna porn folder? Well user, they kinda have. For some reason people can no longer discuss Metroid without wanting to post their favorite zero suit images or talk about their fetishes. So at first I try to ignore them and talk about the games themselves, but then people get on my back if I say something like "there's this cool romhack that I played", and people post ZSS porn out of spite despite me talking about video games. Or I talk about my hopes for Metroid Prime 4, but the moment I say that I would like to see less Zero suit, people freak out as if I'm trying to murder the series.
It just sounds like there is an unhealthy obsession with Samus being this pinup blowtoy instead of having her be a fun and competent protagonist. And what I ask of the series shouldn't be impossible. There's no maybe to it, it will be shown off sometime between September and E3 2020. Metroid 5 restarted development in 2015, went into early production by 2017 was soft-confirmed by Sakamoto to be development in 2018, and leaked to be in full development as of this year just to warly to show off this year, it's definitely coming next year.

i do wish pikmin would come out with a game that had the same engine but was more a metroidvania with strategy elements instead of a full RTS
like instead of just stopping at the end of every day you could retreat to a burrow or hollow in which you could do more with your forces, ie plant reusable candypop buds, pellet posies and spray plants, and possibly open up a tunnel to pikmin 2 style dungeons
meanwhile on the surface the flow would just be exploring the areas, finding gear, suit upgrades and onions to access new zones, and repeat
a grindy pikmin game would just be so comfy imo

but in the wii trilogy it used motion controls and made aiming more natural at the small cost of having to stop and point to switch weapons and visors, impeding fluidity slightly

It added stupid shit to the NES metroid that it didn't fucking need (powerups not in the original game, beamstacking, save locations in a game that's beatable in a couple hours, a terrible unneeded unfitting stealth section, etc...)
it also completely ruined any level of atmosphere the original NES game had. the music is much shittier and less moody. the map is a big meme crutch for zoomers to get through the game, you won't ever have that feeling of falling down 4 screens and feeling truly "lost" you can always just check the map and be like, not afraid or anything. Never have to hunt for missiles or energy. Game is totally piss easy and becomes a silly romp like SotN or SM or AM2R where you can just blow through the whole game like it's fucking nothing.

It's great, but it's very linear and I'd say my least favourite of the 2D games besides the original two which just haven't aged well. For me it's the unskippable dialogue and the way it's like "go here, then leave the area and go here, and then leave the area and go here, rinse and repeat". I found this less of an issue in games like Samus Returns where you're not told where everything is unless you decide to use the amiibo or chozo seal.
Fusion probably has my favourite credits theme of the series though and a really cool ending (besides the Omega Metroid rehashing the Super final boss).

Sakamoto's Metroid games have a serious problem with dull environment design. I think one of the most important things that Metroid 5 needs to do is to break out of this rut. Enough with Zebes, SR388 and space stations, having a fresh setting in 2D Metroid is long overdue.

That's mostly an Other M fault honestly, if you think about it. Super Metroid was the first Metroid game where they could make actually good graphics and they set it on Zebes to be a sequel. Fusion's idea was new at the time, while ZM and SR are remakes and especially with SR they didn't have as much to work with and had to make stuff up.
Other M is the only other "new" Sakamoto game, and it's basically Fusion but inferior. But I agree. Other M's areas were so generic, especially the fire level. Metroid fire levels are so overdone as well, it's like they're obligatory because of the Varia Suit. The next game should do a Prime 3 and start with that and a few basic upgrades. The other issue with post-Fusion is that they can't sell it with the iconic Varia Suit without a boring retcon.

Replayed Super for the first time in 23 years. Was able to bomb-jump up to Kraid on my first try and felt like a boss before realizing the High Jump Boots were literally just 3 rooms away. Also managed to walljump up to Spazer which I had never done as a kid.
Also Norfair is way bigger than I remember. Tons of rooms that just exist to impede your progress before the speed booster.
