It's a sandbox game. You have a few options.
1. Make up a motivation for a character. My character is a scientist who wants to find the most advanced tech possible. Once you have a motivation the rest tend to click into place and you develop a mindset.
2. Go to hyperspace and watch the Intel feeds, accept missions if you want to be led by the nose. Eventually once you visit enough bars you will find story quests.

It's as large scale as you want it to be, much like Mount&Blade. You can get into colonies if you want, or not, and make your fleet as large as you want. If you have a hard time providing direction for yourself, you may struggle.

Yes, you suffer from virtually no accidents during salvage ops and they're cheap to maintain. There are also special encounters that you need a salvage rig to fully benefit from.
